Mirage ain't junk. It's about the same level as Polk so they are a direct competitor. However, that tweeter design, while a pretty good idea, gets gimmicky on their lower end models. They can also throw some weird reflections because of the way the tweeter enclosure is designed to bounce sound.
I don't think the price is bad but I'd go listen to them first and make sure you like them. Mirage has been a hit or miss with me. While the reflection cones are supposed to be designed to make sure that the placement is not as critical, I find that it can make the "sweet spot" difficult to narrow down. For that reason they make great surround speakers and can greatly enhance the surround effect by making it difficult to pin point audio sources. For critical, stereo listening though, I found them to be a bit lacking with other options of both the new and used varieties outperforming them at the price point.

If you are interested and can't get the guy to give you a listen, there are a couple stores near you (well, not really near but close by) that carry Mirage speakers. Most of the company's product line is based on that reflection technology. You can get a good idea of how they sound at one of the local stores.

In my experience, the older products from Mirage have a similar voicing to Polk speakers but the reflective tweeter/mid can make them stand out against other brands and that's not necessarily good.

Well, I went by the guys house and listened to them, he was using a Yamaha AVR. Overall at lower volumes they sounded just ok to me. At higher volumes they sounded very bright almost to the point of discomfort. Oh well, glad I got to listen to them anyways.

That's the AVR. "Bright" is not a word i would personally attach to Mirage, especially when comparing them to the equivalent Polk speakers.

+1000 from experience here bro. Yamaha is/WAS good stuff years back, but they are overly bright and not a good match. You heard the receiver and not the speakers.

I think you did. :p
Up to you if you want to try them on something else, though.
I think they would sound good on a NAD reciever, or maybe a Pio/HK feeding signal to some decent amps.

Right on the mark. If they sounded bright using an NAD receiver then it would definitely be the speakers.

Hell, i've had Mirage of the same vintage on a Pioneer receiver, and it wasn't bright, and i'm very sensitive to bright. Those speakers + NAD receiver would probably be all i needed to make my HT heaven.
Well... add in a Mirage S10 Signature or two.

Do they lean towards warm sounding?

I would vote at least 250% better than how they sounded on that Yammy AVR.

Well, i think my rig sounds rather neuteral...not overly warm or bright. Hell guys, im still a novice when it comes to audio, most of you guys have forgotten more than I know!
