damn the guy has a 27"TV. Those things dwarf it. That is the goofiest looking setup. I'm sure it sounds great just strange looking with such a small tv.

That's no 27" TV, it's a 34" widescreen Panny if my eyes serve me right. IMHO, I think the guy has his priorties in order, 2 channel first, video second.

I know you're into the 8 foot screen, but I'd hardly call his TV weak. Not everyone is into huge screens.

scottvamp
06-01-2003, 03:48 AM
It is not about "being into huge screens". I am just giving my HT point of view - why have a small tv hooked to such a huge sound system. Like putting a weed eater moter on a crouch rocket. Big screens ARE HT. But once again I speak from a HT point of view - nothing personal.:)

F1nut
06-01-2003, 04:22 AM
With all do respect, it really isn't that small of a TV set (the avg. size in this country is 27") and obviously the guy isn't into HT. Why not send the TV sound though the SDA's, you know it's going to sound great. I have my SDA 2 channel rig (awesome) and TV (small) in the same room and I'm perfectly happy with it that way, but I am speaking from a 2 channel point of view. In my case it's part practicality and part priority, perhaps it's the same for him. You know those weed-eater motors turn some high rpms. ;)

Let me just jump on this for a minute,

With all do respect, it really isn't that small of a TV set (the avg. size in this country is 27")
I disagree, the average TV size now is 36.Today the 27 inch TV doesn't sell at all.Average TV purchase for a livingroom is 42.
Plasma is whats selling now. They go out every single day and getting stronger.Prices are down and sales are sky high.I can't remember the last time I saw a 27 inch TV in a family/living or theater room.I believe that was maybe 4 years ago or so...

Before the craze of the the Plasma kicked into high gear, most people would have a 36 or 40 inch Sony,or a 46 or 55 inch Mitsubishi.High Def rules TV purchases.34 inch HD sets sell here and there.Bigger is better. It's all about the video and little about the audio today. Most people are happy with a 42 inch Sony Plasma with a Home Theater in a box to go with it......unbalanced......of course but thats what people want.Generally speaking.

Audio people are becoming a rare breed. We do less and less of matching systems.Everyone wants a huge tv.The audio side for the most part isn't even hand selected.

Dan,
I believe F1 is speaking to what the population has in their homes, where you are saying what people are buying. Apples and oranges...

No doubt the trend is towards bigger these days...

Scott,
Nice to see you bud. Haven't crossed paths in forever it seems.

As for the thread's opening pic. I like the the look of the old hand crank victrola sitting on the far wall. Now that's vintage audio.... :D

F1nut
06-01-2003, 02:28 PM
Dan,

Tour hit the nail on the head, more 27" TV's than anything else.
Most people (the majority) can't afford a 42" Plasma TV and (IMHO) once the rest of the population realizes that LCD and Plasma sets have a very short life span there are going to be some pissed off people. Now, as far as audio people becoming a rare breed. What are you talking about, at what level? A dedicated 2 channel rig may not be as popular as it once was, but audio is a part of most everyone's life. I think your comments come from living in a "Tweeter" world and not reality.

BTW, if you want to see a 27" TV in a living/family room I know a boatload of folks that have them and not one of them is poor, in fact quite the opposite.

Airplay355
06-01-2003, 07:41 PM
the biggest TV in my house is a 24" sony trinitron then two 19" POS tvs and an 11" POS, it has nothing to do with money or space but just the fact that people around here dont really have the need or want for a huge TV we are more of an audio family. now i have watched movies on all of those nice expensive TVs and i agree they are nice and alot of fun to watch and i'd love to own one but i have other priorities first. so maybe that guy doesn't give a crap that his SDA's dwarf his TV, maybe hes into audio alot more then video and who cares? to each his own. sorry just my .02 cents

But when you first see that picture it's damn shocking how big those sda's are.

GuitarheadCA

LCD and Plasma sets have a very short life span
Is this 100% true? I was under the impression that one of the advantages of an LCD computer screen was a much longer life span compared to a comprable CRT. I figured it extended into bigger screens as well.

That said, I wouldn't buy a plazma simply because I think HD CRTs have a superior picture quality, and most of what plazmas have is the "Wow" factor. My Current Dream TV (within reason) is the Sony 34" XBR Widescreen (drool). I find a 34" to be plenty big.

My $.02

27- Little? Let me tell you about my house

We have one (count 'em- ONE) 19" TV. This 10- year old 19" Sony serves as our HT screen and has connected to it all Harmon Kardon electronics, All Polk RTi Speakers, Monster power and cabling through out (quite nice 5.1). Let's just say my parents are reluctant to buying a "Big" TV (like 27 inches). That's not to mention MY 5.1 system (all Onkyo/Polk RTi) doesn't even have a TV connected to it. But Hey- it works :-)

I love hearing about these HT rigs with speakers that only have one tweeter and one driver plus a little sub driver. My littlest speaker has 3 tweeters, 6 drivers and a 15" PR which goes down to 12Hz. And all this time I thought I was missing something - woooo hooooo!!! No wonder concert venues are still pulling down hundreds of millions.

I'm sayin that I don't like the way that he's posting as of late, and because of that, yes, I'm glad to see him going. You should also take from that, that I don't dislike you as a person.....I dislike the way you post, and that's why there's been conflict and intollerance to the (now commonly phrased) pointless posts that are so regular..........

Sid, Brett,

Find some other common ground, OK?

Chasing this Scott off the forum is nothing to be proud of. He ribs, he roasts and he helps. Flamed me way back in my newbie days on the way to becoming site friends.

He knows more about front projection rigs than anyone else here. Best I can tell he's one of the, if not THE, original front channel on steroids guys. Also one of the bigger 6.1 proponents.

He's steered many members down one or more of these paths.

If you're being serious about stopping with the pointless posts, then yes I'll cut ya some slack. What I said in the now HOS'd thread about saying what you have to say still stands. You did finally clarify yourself about the other issue, and that's fine/appreciated.....but when you're given 4 chances to explain your snyde comments and you totally ignore those chances, don't act surprised if peoples reactions resemble mine as of late. The way people communicate says a LOT about the type of person that they are, ya know?

I don't have a problem with Scott overall. I'm saying that if he wants to pop in randomly and shit all over everyone's systems because they don't measure up to what he deems appropriate, then good riddance. In this thread alone, there are 6 posts of his that do absolutely nothing other than berate other people's systems, their opinions, or state how much he dislikes Sid. I can't believe that I'm gonna do this (and i'll edit this part later so there's no proof), but I agree with Sid about him being an A$$ lately. Of course he's welcome to stay, but just because he's an old timer doesn't mean that he's permitted to stay and treat people like shit......It's also a bit redundant to see him post over and over and over again (get it?) as he laughs at other people for the size of their set-ups.

I didn't put up with it from a newbie like Redhouse in the other thread, as I won't put up with it here. He stated that he's on his way out. I was just wishing him well as he's obviously not happy posting here any more..........

Brett what the hell or you talking about - all this so called bashing and bragging you got from sid and sid only.
If I gave you any shit (I as always playfuly joke) I may have said that your center channel is bigger than your tv - that's just good stuff man.
Sid has ruined the Polk name for me.
Sid always ignores all my points and edits his crap because he can't stand the smell of his own sh@t.
I have an awesome HT but have never bragged. There is a fine line to jealousy. One of the ways I get the most enjoyment out of my HT is to see the delightment my friends and family get from it.
I am at a different level of HT than most people on this site.
I do not have the $200 plug and go & a 19" tv and expect people
to
*not give me "funnies"
*expect people to worship me
*pretend that it is as good as it gets
and so on. Sorry not an HT -

I'm leaving? Sure,Sure.....thats what they all say and they all eventually come right back.:D I guess if my system ever makes it to the showcase that I can look foward to a few crap comments about it, but you know I don't mind and I know that it is the best that I can afford to have until I can do better. At least I do have a 42 inch big screen, but I wouldn't have even had that had it not been given to me, otherwise I would still be watching movies on the 25 inch sanyo set;)

I hope that in a few more years that I will be in a better position financially to start really spending some big $$ on some high end gear, with children in the mix though you have to set your priorities and audio gear and h.t just do not get first dibs.
Oh well I guess I will just have to keep dreaming about for now.

Scott,
The bashing is telling every single person, every single time, that their system is essentially crap because they're content with the audio system that they have and when you then try to impose your system standards onto them (your issues with Sid have been resolved with the ignore feature......fine). I don't personally find your redundant 'joking' humorous......I find it rude and insulting. I think that most do when you act like a giggling idiot about when you say it every time too. I'm just saying that you've made your point.......you've made it every single time that someone has stated that they're ok with the TV's that they have. It's time for you to LET IT GO and accept that regardless of your 'joking', people aren't going to go projo because you say so. Get it?

In all honesty, I find it AMAZING that you're under the impression that I've been *attacking* the past few weeks. I don't want to rehash, but maybe you didn't catch the situation as a whole that would have caused me to react the way that I have, which I will make absolutely zero apologies for.

With regard to Scott though......I think that I've said it a few different ways now.....but here's another:

WE ALL GET THAT HE LOVES HIS SYSTEM AND THAT ANYTHING SMALLER THAN AN 8 FOOT SCREEN TO HIM IS RIDICULOUS AND SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO BE CALLED A HT SYSTEM.

Scott's message in his posts (joking or not) is that someone who deems their 27" TV as sufficient for their needs is out of their mind. I don't comprehend how it is that I'm seemingly one of the only one's that has such an issue with what he's saying. My message to Scott isn't to shut up and leave......it's to say ACCEPT what other people's systems are and QUIT GIVING THEM SHIT ABOUT IT. I'm pretty damned proud of my system (as I think that most here are) and to see Scott (or anyone else that would be doing the same) dogging on ANYONE'S system because of what HE feels is insufficient for their home IS insulting.

My reaction to this isn't a new thing. Sorry if this is going to rehash something, but several months back when Mantis was commenting on Frank's couch in his room, Dan took the comments too far. I posted something very similar to what I'm posting here about it not being something for Dan to take issue with, as Frank was perfectly comfortable with his couch the way it was, or else he would have moved it around or whatever. Same goes for what each individual person here deems appropriate for their needs.

The bottom line is....there's a difference between harmless joking around with someone, and ribbing them repeatedly (while smiling no less) as if to tell them what a fuckin idiot they are to think the way they do. Hearing Scott say the same thing over and over and over again crosses over the joking line and gets to a point where it reinforces the second attitude described above. Why would that be acceptable to anyone? Really.........

If everyone thinks that I'm out of my mind, by all means tell me. Maybe I have no right to jump in and say that someone's being inappropriate in their comments to others here. If the concensus is that I'm off my rocker here, so be it, I'll back down, but btw.....I'm not the only one that's of the same mind on this imparticular subject.........
