Replacing a PR

In the centers -- I am contemplating replacing the Planar PRs with actual PRs

Planar PRs for those that didnt know (like me) are just a piece of wood mounted to surrounds...

So -- what would entail putting an actual PR in there - I know Def Tech basically did it to cut cost....

I must ask what do you expect to gain? A passive radiator is just a diaphram of a specific size and weight that is tuned to a certain frequency to extend the bass response of the system. IMO changing to a different PR gains you nothing and if the new one wasn't tuned correctly would actually degrade the bass performance of your speakers.

My main thoughts are the fact its just a piece of wood. There is no spider or anything - the "woofer" as we'll call it just kind of exists and moves as it sees fit.

My thought is replacing it with a real woofer/PR will give it more control and more definition - possibly even dig lower...

There is no spider or anything - the "woofer" as we'll call it just kind of exists and moves as it sees fit.A PR has no magnet or voice coil as it is not meant to be driven by the amplifier,instead it is put into motion by the air pressure or backwave of the woofer.It like a bass reflex port is tuned (by it's mass)to extend the bass response of the woofer to a lower frequency.


My thought is replacing it with a real woofer/PR will give it more control and more definition - possibly even dig lower...I 'll repeat what I said in my previous post that unless it is tuned correctly a replacement PR will degrade bass response and not improve it.

While the claim of 24hz extension seems a little bit optimistic It appears to have(atleast on paper)excellent bass response for such a small system utilizing a 6.5" woofer.Personally I wouldn't mess with the bass tuning aspect of this one.

The only difference with the wood is that less weight will have to be added. The spider won't buy you anything, just allowed the manufacturer to use a more wimpy surround.
