I just picked up the new Radiohead CD yesterday. Today, I'm at work listening to it and it's great.
The only problem is it's copy protected, when you try and listen to it in your computer the CD installs a player. The player blows, it streams at 48Kbps and 44khz. It sounds like streaming internet radio. Cymbals and highs get compressed and even vocals at times. What a crock. I paid for this CD, I should be able to listen to it at the best possible quality. When are the record companies going to learn that the more they piss people off, the more resistence there will be to their copyright schemes.
I'm not happy.

And then what? Will there be unprotected copies? I do want the CD, just not the copy protection.

We've heard from fans all over the world from Japan to Argentina telling us that their copy of Hail to the Thief is copy protected and won't work right in older cd players and home computers. It appears that the only country that doesn't have copy-protected copies of HTTT is the United States.
This is a quote from a Radiohead fan site. WTF, why? Copy protected in Canada? If I want an unprotected copy I'll have to pay a premium and buy from the U.S.
If it's not protected in the U.S. what the point? It's the biggest freekin market in the world. If it's going to be copied, I think one of you guys is going to do it and release it online. This is such crap.

I just sent a nasty little email to Capitol Records. We'll see if I get a response.

Just use CDex. It will copy any "copy protected" CD.

I knwo Sony tried some bull**** copy protection thing a while back that prevented it from being read in a computer by having a bogus data track. There was a work-around though. All you had to do was trace around the outer edge with a black mark and the comp would ignore it. Might give it a try.

There's always a work around. Thanks, I'll try CDex tomorrow. The way I see it is: security shouldn't compromize functionality. When will they learn?

i havent payed for music in so long, ever since my cable modem and kazaa whenever i want a CD i just download the music and burn it, no problems at all and at 192 kb the quality is very good, not quite CD quality but i will sacrifice alittle quality for the saving of $15

I agree, you should be buying CDs. Unless you really can't afford to buy em.
Demiurge, CDex didn't work totally. I was able to rip songs but they had some low pops everynow and then. Some of them skipped too.

actuley phlips holds the patents on a cd and they are argueing that a copu proteced cd is not a cd. beacues it dues not fit the cd specks. so they are trying to get them put in their own secton. actuley the copu protected cd olny hurts the little guy the guy wanting to put it on the web or copy and sell it will easley get around the protecton.

My problem, is it skips in my bedroom mini system. It's just a pure inconvienence for me.

dcarlson, I bought Hail to the Thief when it came out and uploaded it to Musicmatch on my friends comp. just fine, so maybe the copies sold in America are free of the copy protection. Great album, by the way.

Bingo, they're not copy controlled in the U.S. which makes no sense to me. Why restrict a smaller market (Canada) and not the biggest freaking market in the world?
Amazing album, the more I listen, the more I love it. Typical Radiohead genius.

Thats really odd CDex didn't work for you. That is by far the best Ripping program available. Maybe you should try the radiohead message board for more info. I could always rip them for you and send them to you if you wanted them that bad.

Thanks for the offer man, I appreciate it. I don't think it's that serious yet, I plan on getting it on vinyl. Maybe I'll rip a copy from the lp.
