I wanted to get a new thread going for our next San Diego Polkie Gathering so that we can all start getting a date on the calendar well ahead of time.

I'd like to shoot for sometime between mid-October and the week before Thanksgiving which should give me some time to get settled in the new place. More than likely, it will be late October or early November before I'm ready to go.

Start throwing some possible dates at me. I imagine that Saturdays work best for everyone.....they do for me.

If you guys don't mind a newbie tagging along, I'm interested in a meet as well.

October 23rd is my vote.

If you can re-arrange your 2-channel setup, then I can bring some Shotgun S2 speaker cables and the stuff I brought last time.

Thanks to Norm, I picked up a set of Shotgun S3 ICs....burning in right now. :p

If I'm really industrious, I suppose I could dismantle my setup and bring my Musical Fidelity A5 Integrated Amp.

And of course, any new CD/SACDs I've picked up until then.

I'm interested and flexible. I can't think of one weekend that is better or worse than another, so I'll just stay tuned to this thread.

i wounder if any audio/video place would like to bring some stuff to show off. i know the Polk Refurb shop is in Vista, MonoPrice is in Rancho Cucamonga.

I am going to try and accomplish a better setup for the 1C's in relationship to the rack although I'm a bit limited. The 1C's demand a long wall. They are supposed to be at least 3 ' from side walls and 6' apart for best SDA results. I would like to hear some different amps and will try to make that happen somehow. At least the two places I'm thinking of have power on the wall vs. my current setup which happens to be against a garage door.

Thanks to Norm, I picked up a set of Shotgun S3 ICs....burning in right now. :p

Lucky! I've got to save my cash for the move but I did pick up a "necessary piece of equipment" - a quad of TC265i in walls http://www.polkaudio.com/customaudio/tci/index.php?s=tc265i for a great price to use for the side and rear surround channels (in lieu of the FX1000's)

If I'm really industrious, I suppose I could dismantle my setup and bring my Musical Fidelity A5 Integrated Amp.

Is that a SS or tube amp? It's always great to hear what another amp will do for speakers so bring it if you can/want!

I'll put October 23 down as a potential date. Any dates in November work for you?

Great! Glad to see we've got a lot of interest. It will definitely be November before I'm ready to host a meet.

Here are possible dates all on Saturday:
November 6, 13, or 20

Please PM me your availability for each of the dates (not just the one you want) unless you are only available for 1 of the dates. I will pick the date that most people can attend.

I'm in North Escondido. I plan to block out the entire day starting around 10am'ish (gives the LA'ers time to drive down) and go until it's time to put the kids in bed (usually 8:30pm'ish) or until people need to leave (whichever comes first).

I have two rooms that will serve quite nicely for equipment shootouts. The 2-channel room (also serves as the master bedroom in a secondary roll :D ) is 500 sq ft and the SDA's are on a 25' wall. Plenty of room for other speakers, amps, CDP's or whatever others want to bring to do comparisons. Maybe dorokusai would want to lend us a pair of the new LSi's? :D

The HT room serves as the concert DVD, multi-channel SACD and (of course) the SRT experience room. :D Got to get it set up...so much to do. The amps are racked so it would be easy to try other amps if someone wants to bring one along.

Beyond a BBQ for lunch, there is really no schedule of events other than just whatever everyone wants to do in terms of critical listening and trying out other gear. Last time, we started with a listening session on my modded SDA 1C's. Nobody that attended last time had heard SDA's. My Anthem pre and power tube amps served as the baseline and as desired, we swapped IC's, CDPs, etc. It's a lot of fun but dangerous to the wallet at the same time.

Anyone who is interested in bringing gear, go ahead and start posting what you want to bring and I'll get a master list going. The same thing goes for food and drinks. I think I speak correctly for Erik that Norm is more than welcome to bring those salads again. They were delicious!

Hi Doug and everybody....

This will surely be a lot of fun...again!

This time I was thinking about bringing the modded Lsi9s if there is interest. Those suckers are heavy! for bookshelf speakers, but if anyone would like to hear them who hasn't heard the modded version (Ben's work), then I'll bring them.

I also of course have the full array of the MIT S-3 line available (3 sets of ICs and one set of bi-wire speaker cables), but again I know that other attendees have some of these so I'll just bring according to what we need. BTW, are any of your set ups now configured so that we can try the speaker cables?

As for bringing salads, Doug, count me in. (BTW I asked my wife and she said that it was homemade dressing). Last time I felt bad about bringing the potato salad though because you had already prepared those large baked potatoes. I can easily substitute a pasta or chicken salad instead of the potato salad if we'll be having baked potatoes this time. But I'll definately bring the green salad with that dressing as well. As we move closer to the date, hopefully we can get a head count to determine how many people I should plan to accomodate (i.e. how much to bring).

Used to own some LSi7's and the sound is pretty fresh in my head. I've heard 9's but wasn't too fond of the mid-bass hump so I'd be interested in hearing your modded-pair.

Norm, looks like you've signed up to bring the LSi's!

Right now the 2 channel rig is configured the same as last time but there is a huge window seat in the middle of the speakers (about 12' long) that would be perfect for temporarily setting up amps, etc. I am not opposed to this as I would like very much to hear the speaker cables too.

Which Marantz did you pick up? The SA8004? I'm looking forward to hearing it as I have a low-end Marantz CD player in my secondary 2-channel rig (Marantz CD-5001) which I think was a great value for the price ($300 new).

I could bring the Bada, however, I should let you know that we in fact did listen to the tubed output last time. The one thing we didn't listen to are HDCDs (I have built up a fairly decent collection of HDCDs) as this player decodes HDCDs, but my guess is that the leap from redbook to SACD is generally greater than from redbook to HDCDs. I was going to wait and see what others may bring in terms of CD players but I certainly could tote it along.

I've got Signal Cable Analog IIs in my home theater and secondary 2-channel rig and could bring along a pair. I used to own a pair AQ Diamondbacks but I sold them after determining that in my system, at least, I liked the SC Analog IIs slightly more. Last time we met at Doug's house - we had a relatively small selection of components to try out. If we have more folks showing up - maybe we should be a bit judicious in what we want to try out? Otherwise, it'll be a sleep over at Doug's with all the gear to try out! :D

Well guys, I'm really looking forward to getting your honest opinion on how the modded Lsi9s sound to your ears. Here's why: I had been thinking that next year and the year after, my next upgrade combo would be a better/more powerful SS amp and a tube pre, while keeping the Lsi9s. I floated this idea on a different forum, asking for suggestions on possible SS amps and tube preamps to consider, listing all of my gear in the original post.

To my surprise, a good number of people (over half) so far have said that they think that my speakers are the weakest link in the chain and that for now I should keep both Parasound Halo pieces and first go for better speakers. To me, the Lsi9s sound much better than before the mod and that the Parasound stuff are the weaker links, but I guess its all relative. Of course those are just opinions (and I have no idea if those with that stance have actually heard Lsi9s, much less modded ones) but nevertheless I've been surprised by how many people have come to that conclusion. Thus I'll be very interested in getting each of your honest opinion.

Doug -- I forgot which two-channel amp model you have (was it Anthem?). I just wanted to check and make sure that it is 4-ohm stable/compatible. Or at the very least if there will be an amp on hand that is 4-ohm stable?

(I suppose if I were really ambitious I could tote along the Parasound amp and pre as well, but that would be quite a lot of gear to bring)

dpowell
10-06-2010, 11:07 AM
Norm,
There's probably only one way to find out what the best path forward is....bring the speakers and the two Parasound amps. :D

My suggestion is that since I have a tube preamp and a tube power amp (4 ohm capable - the SDA 1C's are 4Ohms), you can try all four combos:

Parasound Pre/Power, LSi9's
Tubed Pre, parasound Halo power amp, LSi9's
Parasound Pre, Tubed Power amp, LSi9's
Tubed Pre/Power, LSi9's

Plus, I'd like to hear your Halo A21 (I believe?) replace one of the Parasound non-halo's on the SRT's to see if there is a noticeable difference (I have my eyes long-term on a Halo a51).

Totally up to you as that is a lot of gear to bring but it would make for a very interesting comparisson.

BTW, the Amp models are Anthem Pre2L and Anthem Amp 1.

doug

PS, if you don't want to bring the Halo power amp, I can always pull a Parasound HCA 1200II from the SRT system to power your LSi's. It is a 2 channel 205w @8 ohms and 315w @ 4 ohms.

Norm Apter
10-06-2010, 01:57 PM
Sounds great, Doug.

Well, we don't this every week or anything so I think it might be worth hauling everything along with me. I would love to try the different combinations you mentioned above and get everybody's opinions (it also might help me identify my weakest link). My original plan is/was to eventually move on to a better, more powerful SS amp and a tube pre. So I'd definately love to see how throwing the tube amp/ pre into the mix changes things.

Just one note...my amp is the A21's little brother, the A23. Its less powerful (125 w @ 8 ohms, 200 w @ 4ohms) but it, along with the P3 preamp, might give you some sense of how the Halo line sounds with your other gear (source and speakers).

dpowell
10-06-2010, 02:34 PM

Norm,
There's probably only one way to find out what the best path forward is....bring the speakers and the two Parasound amps.

If you guys want I could bring my Parasound 2205a.
I recently purchased it off Audiogon and haven't had a chance to properly test it since my HT room is under construction now.
I would love to hear what it could do with dpowell's SRTs. :)

Oh.....& I might bring my brother-in-law. He & I are tech and gear heads so he would probably enjoy the display of audio gear that will be at the meet.

I could bring drinks.....beer or soda or both......let me know.

Reece,
You're more than welcome to bring your bro-in-law, the amp and some drinks! Looks like the Parasound you have has very similar specs to mine. In 8ohm mode the 2205a is 15wpc more than mine but in 4ohm mode, it is 15wpc less? Not sure I understand it. I'm running the SRT's @ 4ohms and the SRT center at 8ohms.

That's quite a committment! I'll be really interested to hear how the 2.3TL's compare to the 1C's. I'm getting phenomenal bass out of the 1C's in the new listening area compared to my last house. Do the 2.3's have the 12" or 15" bass radiator?

I ought to warn you, the only way into my house is up a flight of stairs....very wide stairs so there's plenty of room to avoid damaging the speakers but still something to keep in mind that will have to happen to get them in the house.

Placement and room dimensions really do make a big difference. I had mine properly setup at my last house but I believe I had a bass trap in the room that 'stole' from the listening position. Adding some granite slabs underneath them (others here recommend spikes) improved the bass somewhat and upgrading the x-overs (all sonicaps) improved them some more.

They really came alive in the new room though. The new room is less square which helps avoid standing waves and gives me more room to spread the speakers apart.

You may find that your 2.3's come alive just by changing positions or adjusting them in or out from the wall a few inches. Mine are currently 8 inches from the back wall.

Makes sense, they have 2 additional mid-drivers and larger cabinets. I am now REALLY looking forward to hearing them side by side.

I find with my 1C's now that if they had any more bass, I would feel the upper-end was not loud enough.

Just thinking about what we have going on for the day, I'm not sure we can find room for any more equipment.

We have the following projects:

CDP shootout (if desired)
Amp shootout
IC, speaker cable and power cable shootouts
SDA shootout
Norm's LSi9's with various amps
Multi-channel SACD/concert DVD playback on the SRT's

If we give each thing adequate time for proper listening and comparison, the day will be over before we know it.

Honestly, I don't know. Maybe others can chime in on this? You have a Pioneer SC-07 and I have a Pioneer Elite 92TXH from the previous year. Since I'm using pre-outs, I dont' know if we'd notice any difference unless we switched to the internal ICE amp on yours. We'd also need to re-calibrate your AVR to my room to make it a fair comparison.

As far as the BDP goes, it's a fairly easy swap. We'd only be able to do the comparisons after it gets darker in the evening. There are so many windows in the HT and I just haven't had the time to properly do the window treatments that make the projector work its best during the day.

That works. My grill isn't the best at this point. It has one corner that cooks things up fast (for burning Mole's steak), and another corner that really only acts as a warmer/defrosting section (for Freddy's raw steak) The other two sections are somewhere in-between.

Being quite serious here for a moment, the issues I describe above are quite real and might cause some logistical issues in terms of the amount of time it will take to cook up 13 steaks......It was fine when it was just 4 of us at the last meet but I don't think we want to take an hour+ just to cook steaks.

Anyone got a portable BBQ they want to bring to supplement mine?

Here is a list of some of my concert DVDs (some are documentaries with concert footage). If anybody wants to hear any part of any of these, please let me know and I'll be sure to tote it/them along (otherwise I'll leave them behind):

Pink Floyd - Pulse (1994)
Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii (1971)
Sting - Bring on The Night (1985)
Bob Marley and The Wailers - Live! at the Rainbow (1977)
Wilco - Ashes of American Flags (2008)
Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains The Same (1973)
Led Zeppelin - (2003 -- footage from 1970, 1973, 1975, and 1979)

Assorted (for any of the following just let me know if you want any further information on dates/periods):

Radiohead (several concerts, 1997-2009)
Pink Floyd (various concerts, 1968-1988)
Wilco (various concerts, 1995-2009)
Sting (various concerts, 1993-2000)
Led Zeppelin (various concerts, 1975-1979)

Additionally, I plan to bring a copy of Jazz at the Pawnshop (CD), as its generally regarded as a reference level recording, in addition to some others.

I will likely have 4 X Polk FX1000's for sale by then but one of the attendees has 1st dibs on them. I still have to get the in-wall rears installed for the HT and make sure I'm happy with them before I let those bad boys go.....

I'm guessing he didn't post them up for sale on a thread.

Think it was mentioned though when Doug posted a thread regarding in-wall speakers. Correct me if I'm wrong?

They're timbre-matched to the old RT series (before RTiA and RTi series) - http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/products/recent/fx1000/

Always loved the CS400 and CS350LS center channels from that series (as well as LS70/90's), but not too much the powered subs that were in the RT1000P's I used to own.

Well, I'm coming from Salinas (bringing my cousin along).

I'd say sounds like a plan but I want to take my car specifically since Mole' wants to take a look at it ;)

It's up to you+Mole'+my cousin cause I'm leaving a day or more beforehand because I'll be staying at his house before going to Doug's the day after.

Just got a PM from another forum member and it looks like we'll need yet another steak.... I honestly have lost track of the 'additional non-forum member guests'. Those of you bringing an additional guest, please remind me. I think we were at 13 steaks the last time I checked....

There seem to be slight differences between the vintage RT series tweeters and the new RTi tweeter. I can't quite put my finger on it yet. We can actually try an experiment out when you guys are here because the in-wall's I'm using for the HT are the new RTi series TCi-265's which have the same tweeters as the regular RTi series tower speakers and those will be in the system with the SRT's which have the vintage RT series tweeters.

I'm thinking that SACD Pink Floyd DSOTM would give us a very good indication of whether they are adequately timbre matched or not.

I'm not a big meat eater, so assuming there will be plenty of other types of food brought by attendees and available, I will probably decline a steak (i.e. one less for Mole' to pick up). As the date approaches and we get a food list going I'll confirm for sure.

I still plan on buying these speakers as long as dpowell is willing to part with his precious baby's.:)

so is anyone bringing stuff they have for sale?
if so i need to see how much $$$ i need to bring with me

If dpowell does sell his Black fx1000's, then I will sell my pair of Rosewood fx1000's. I would rate these speakers 7/10 in condition...mostly because there is a slight depression on the top of 1 of the speakers. For that reason alone I would sell them for $350. Other than the 1 blemish they are in prefect working condition. (just to keep things in perspective, dpowell is selling his for $450. a pair)

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/8307/polkrt5000fx1000blemish.th.jpg (http://img143.imageshack.us/i/polkrt5000fx1000blemish.jpg/)

I would rather have my whole set-up in Black, so that's why I want to buy dpowell's instead of keeping the 1 set in Rosewood I have now.
So...If anyone else besides mole' is interested I'll bring them to the meet & you can test them there.

Just an FYI, I will have for sale at the meet a pair of 8' Goertz Flatwire speaker cables with Rhodium plated nanners. I'm using Goertz for the SRT's and had some extra left over from the install.

Info here: http://www.goertzaudio.com/contents/en-us/d20_Flatwire.html

Goertz's price with Rhodium (which is what I believe I have) plated nanners is $300/pr. terminated. I also have 4 of the spades which would allow you to have nanners on one end and spades on the other. Goertz sells those for $26/pr. I can work something out if someone wants the spades.

These cables were terminated at Goertz on one end and I terminated them on the other which is why one end has the heat shrink and the other does not. The copper is insulated so the heatshrink only serves to make them more aesthetically pleasing.

I'll offer the pair for $200 SD Polkie meet price and of course you don't have to worry about the shipping costs. :p. Of course you can demo them at the meet as well. :D

If there's no interest here in the next few days, I'll post them in the FS section of the forum.

Any time I listen to music on my HT, I think, why cant the SRT's sound as sweet as my 1C's? then I realize it has a lot to do with using an AVR vs tube amps, cabling and proper placement for SDA imaging. It's just the way it is with HT.

Music on an HT rig yeah I can imagine.

If I had a dual purpose rig, the IC's going from avr/pre/pro to external amp would be the S3's while the IC's for all other channels would be something along the lines of AQ or SignalCable II's or better.

I miss my 1C's, man they were SO MINT. Even the original boxes+foam. And damn did they sound sweet!

Yep, RDO's plus all sonicaps and mills on the XOs and granite slabs. Also got a set of Ei EL-34 tubes from F1Nut that I need to roll into the amp before the meet.....I'm currently running stock tubes.

I've got some dynamat waiting for install too.

Oh wow, can't wait to hear it!

Thinking of going small though for the next rig. Speakers will be Monitor 10's, speaker wire will be Bens Silver speaker wire, interconnects will be MIT Shotgun S-series, might go with Pangea power cords if not Signal Cable and a tube integrated (EL34's maybe?).

Not sure about source yet.

Well, I have put together a couple of systems I'm very pleased with....but that's taken me over 10 years. Look how much you've done since joining the club in July of this year! :D Plus you have more posts than me now.:p

You can spend significantly less if you buy last years S3 model if you really want to. I'm just a little anxious to try out the current S3.3 cables. ;)

Oh hell, that I wouldn't mind!

Funny you mention that, I was thinking to myself just recently that I'd love to shave off a ton of weight. It's got potential but at 3,400lbs it's pretty damn heavy!

4-500lbs huh? Sheesh, what are you trying to make of it...a sleeper?!

Will need to remove the GT and 2.4l Turbo badging :p

Oh and I never told ya, I bought a custom license plate. Waiting for DMV to send me my letter via mail to pick them up which is an expected 8-12 weeks.

I got 'Z3RO LAG' :p

I really like it bro. I never thought I'd use the network function on it as much as I do. I turn it on, click it over to Pandora, and blast away. :)

Denon also has an app that lets ya control the 3311 with your iPhone/iPad, it works really well too. :)

The SRT won't be for awhile anyway, I'm quite happy with the GT. It's a huge step up from my Focus ZX3 SE.

They had the infield course setup, so that back side wasnt that fast part of the track. I did get up to right around 170ish on the front straight before having to let off for a chicane that was setup. :)

Time to get the meal prep going.

So far:

Doug: Baked Potatoes
Mole': Steaks
Norm Apter: Salad

Taking recommendations on other sides and snacks. I remember being beyond the point of hungry by the time we pried ourselves away from the 2-channel room last time around 1pm. I think it would be a good idea to have some snacks out so that we can graze until the BBQ's get fired up.

Chips and Dip
Veggie Platter and Dip
Guacamole (I can make up a big batch)
Other?

For lunch, what else would you guys like to see go with Steak and Baked Potatoes? We'll need condiments such as sour cream, cheese, chives, etc. for the Potatoes. If there are any members who would prefer something other than steak (meat or non-meat) please let me know.

Of course we'll need drinks too. Probably would be good to get people's preferences on drinks. Personally, I'll drink water or tea.
