When someone describes the the sound as laid back...what does that mean?

When someone describes the the sound as laid back...what does that mean?

It is the position of the soundstage created by the equipment relative to the speaker position.

Hence, for example, the singer should be a center image between the speakers. If you draw a line from speaker to speaker, and the singer is positioned behind the lateral line of the back of the speakers - it would be regarded as 'laid-back'; if the singer was 'positioned' just forward of the speaker grills lateral line - it would be regarded as 'forward'. Basically - how close or far away the soundstage is to the listener's position.

These are a little more extreme than typical, but it gives you an idea.
