What are you using for fronts? I think Monitor 5JR's would make fine surrounds for a vintage Polk HT. They have more bass than you would think.

I have used a pair for my Rears, especially with Mon 10's as Fronts.
Definitely have more base than the Mon 30's I tried, for a while.....
(misconception that I needed 'newer speakers"...wrong..LOL)

I am trying to put small system together for kids who have small apt (daughter and so-in-law). They have 5's for fronts right now and no rears..
This is a first system that cant be cranked...

With Monitor 5's for fronts, 5jr's would be fine for rears. They're pretty large for surround duty, but if the size is okay, then I say go for it.

Go for it. I have two sets of Monitor 5JR+ series II doing duty as side and rear surrounds in a 7.1 system. I think they have plenty of body to fill the space with surround sound that will make you flinch from time to time. I have mine mounted using tilt and swing LCD monitor brackets I bought from Monoprice for about $15! You can see pictures here:

i use 5jr series II's for my 2 channel system... which is my only system... lol.
anyway... they have plenty of bass in fact according the literature i've read... the low end is allegedly 32hz which is only 2hz more than what my sub will put out... i had to back off the bass on my preamp b/c it was hard to distinguish between the sub and the 5jr's, even with the crossover on the sub down to 80hz.
i don't know about the series I w/out the passive resistor and smaller cabinet and fuse on the back panel... those might not have the same frequency response as the series II...
