The seven-teen year old 27'' JVC television has been on the decline for the past few years now. The lines began to show themselves, the tube began to darken, the sound rarely worked. Today was the day to upgrade. After many hours of debating, my parents decided to go with a 27'' Panasonic. Both wanted a Sony Vega, but the entertainment center is limited.

They brought it home and not moments ago, we conducted a test. My new Ixos "silver" S-video cable arrived today. I was proud and stated blindly on how it would improve over-all clarity. My dad, behind the tv hooking things up asked to see the cables and conducted a "behind the scenes" test for us all.

Each time, all of us (myself included) favored one picture. Turned out, it was the generic cable..... This little 1 dollar piece of **** out-performed Ixos by quite a bit. My dad had a big grin on his face. My mom gave a laughter, half of it filled with humor, the other pitty. The neighbor said some quick comment. I left the room rather non-chalaunt. Video is not my forte.

However, it does hurt ... *sniff sniff*

Now I will debate on where I should return this item or hold on to it.

The lesson for today - Think twice before buying a more expensive cable for video. Apparently Ixos video cables lack have the "wham" its speaker wire does. I hear their interconnects are not worth the asking price either.

Regards,

Sean

It's time to buy a bunch of those generic cables, some techflex and head off to E-bay.

Just out of curiousity, what was the source?
Could it be a case of GIGO ?

The source is a Pioneer vsx-6050 reciever. Or something along those lines. Not exactly hi-fi. My parents would upgrade but the costs is keeping them away.

The source (cdp - dvdp) is a simple Mintek. You can find one at best buy for about 250 bucks. It's a fine example of a cheap little source that is worth the money.

I think this might be a case of the IXOS cable showing you the harsh realities of your Mintek player ;)

Could be just speculation though on my part. haha

WHile i haven't used the IXOS video cables.. i do use IXOS interconnets.. which I'm happy with.

FOr S-video I went with Monster 3 all the way around a few months ago.. I did notice a improvment in the color, sharpness and brightness with the Monster 3's, over the $5 Rat shack ones I was using..

Yes.....it depends greatly on the TV and the source .......compared to the interal scaler in the player vs the internal scaler of the TV.

Using composite will use the scaler in the TV.Pioneer Elite rear projection Tv's does the best job making less then reference DVD players look there best or other sources if you will.

S-video is terrible. It's grainy and seems to bleed colorws.By design it's suppost to be an Improvement over composite video.I find it to be worse. Not to mention that the connector sucks really bad.It falls out if the air blows to hard on it,if the sub hits to hard etc......vaccum the rug and it wants to fall out. Some companies do a better job with the connector then others....but not much.

Comparing video cables you need a larger set to see the differences.Tv's under 36 inches are hard pressed to show the real differences.Projection tvs and Projectors show this greatly.Plasma also does a fine job of showing the difference in quality from one cable to another.

You know some companies just do video extremely well.Monster is that very company. When you buy there M500 and M1000 series video cables, you are getting top quality cables at a very fair price.Transprent video cables are slightly better detailed and edge stable, but at a high cost. It's only worth the extra cost if you own a higher end rear projection Tv or better.Tube Tv's it was extremely hard to see the benefits from higher end cables.

Polkatese would see a difference from Monster M1000v component cables to Transparent component. But he owns a Pioneer Elite Pro520Hd.Which is a reference tv.

So does this fall into the matching theory???absolutely.

Yep, Dan, figured it was a matching issue. I know as much about video as I do famous cheese.

Will be returning the video cable shortly. You live, experiment, and learn. All in good times.

Dan, I am waiting for HD local broadcast becoming more common and doesn't require an extra terrestrial antenna to get them, then I will revisit component cable. Do you have any information whether retrofit/upgrade to DVI for the PE is available? that may be an even better option...

polkatese,
I haven't heard anything of the sort.I don't know if there going to upgrade there older sets or even make it avalible.Nothing wrong with Antenna for HDTV,it's the single best source for HDTV right now.You have a off air decoder in your Sony, why not use it.\

You already own M1000v component cables, there great cables. You could benefit alot more then many other due to the kind of set you own. It's very detailed. But your going to pay out your butthole to improve.Monster M1000vs are hard to beat...you gotta fork it out my man.

thanks, Dan..my issue with terrestrial antenna is the hook up. I might try an indoor zenith and see if it is strong enough to pick up local channels...
