Gentlemen,

While these forums collectively attract those geared more towards audio, I am hoping there would be a few video experts in our midst that would be able to assist in a few question's.

Firstly, I know virtually nothing of video. I am simply beginning to gather idea's on what item to purchase to mate with my newly acquired Samsung 27'' flat-screen HDTV.

I already have an S-Video cable by Ixos. Would Component video cable work better?

I would enjoy a player that could support DVD-A. SACD would be a bonus, but not an absolute must. I have my eye ball on this new Pioneer cd/dvd/sacd/dvd-a player on crutchfield thats going for just under 200 buck's.

Ive also had my eye on the Denon 1600 (yes, Betty.., the worlds not coming to an end) which features the Genesis chip. The price seems steep and the player seems to be in the process of getting phased out completely.

Any suggestions, tips, on mating sources with your television would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sean

Sean,

I am no expert.

I believe that Component Video is much better than S-Video or Composite. S-Video in every instance that I have used it, has improved the picture over Composite. There are some that say not really, etc etc...but that's my real world experience with all three.

The Pioneer for $200 sounds good, low investment, big return for the audio/video fan. At least that way you can experiment with cables while you save up for a super high end player. The Denon is also a nice player, go with what you feel comfortable with ad what fits the pocket. I am sure that you could sell the Pioneer later and get most of your money back...it covers all formats, thats a bonus.

I was amazed at how much better my old beater cd changer sounded with upgraded cables. It was so good, I was able to re-arrange my "to-do" list for the stereo and concetrate on other things.

Good luck.

Dorokusa,

I am tending to believe that Component Video may be the route to take. In fact, this is about the only type of connection that is on the back end of the tv. Common sense would suggest that this is the appropriate connection to make..

I already have my "hi-fi" cd player, if you will. The AMC CD8B. Will see how she sounds with Kimber Hero's.

It would be nice to have that sacd/dvda capability, I simply wonder if this player will do justice to either of those formats.

Also, video quality is very important to me right now. This tv is showing the weaknesses of my wire and sources all over the place. Perhaps this is common for HDTV's. Pioneer seems to score very low with video quality in reviews... ..

Sean

I am a DVD watching pyschopath, so I also want high video quality. I think that the player will perform fine, and you will enjoy the sound greatly.

I am unsure of where you are getting it, but just keep your receipt, don't like it?, bring that puppy back and move up.

Sean - Crutchfield has extremely good Customer Service, no question returns, free return shipping...etc, I say get it man.

Let me know how you like it, get some SACD's and some beer.

ATC,

I second the value of using the component video connection between your tv and DVD player. This will give you the best possible image. I would also look into getting a progressive scan DVD player. The progressive scan is supposed to be better than regular. It's a little more expensive, but worth it otherwise you'll want to upgrade again.

Crutchfield has a nice writeup about progressive scan DVD players here:

ATC,

One more thing, some DVD players suffer from some sort of "jitter bug" or "chroma bug". I don't know too much about it but remember reading some of Dr. Spec's posts on it.

Do a search on the forum on "chroma bug" and you will get a bunch of posts on players that are free of these problems.

I'm no T.V. expert but.

If your T.V. is HDTV ready, the only way to take advantage of HD, is to get a Progressive scan DVD and use the Component Video. S-Video does not do progressive scan.

What is the model number on the TV? Once you tell us that, I will tell you your optimal options for hooking up your equipment...

Thanks,

Gentlemen,

I thank you all for your input and replies. It looks as if I will go the component video route. Now to look for cables, dare I go Ixos again ?

The Pioneer sacd/dvd/dvd-a player for $175 also boasts progressive scan/cinema. The same the Elite players feature. I will most likely go this route!

Thanks!

Sean- I just ordered a complete set of video cables from Signal, this week, I am expecting great things. I will post my thoughts, opinion only of course, on what I have found with them.

Signal Component Video/Analog 1 v2.0/Digital Coax(2).

I am not doing A&B due to that I am upgrading to component video from S, and assembling various other cables for cable box to receiver. No A&B really possible. I will only be able to state build quality, and performance out of box.

The Signal speaker cables I have recently replaced my entire HT with, were nothing short of outstanding. I am hoping to continue this trend. :)
