Can anybody gives a cliff note version of its definition and difference to what's otherwise available? thanks in advance...

I asked my brother in law a similar question and here's the response (Class D are also referred to as digital):

"The primary difference between classes of amplifiers is their
transistor/circuit topography.
Class A amplifiers use transistors that are continually biased (on),
resulting in very low distortion, low output impedance, but high (relatively) current consumption.

In the case of Class A low distortion is, to some degree, achieved at the cost of lower efficiency.

Class D amplifiers use transistors that act as switching devices. Consequently their power consumption is much lower, and produce somewhat more distortion.

Class A amplifiers are often preferred by stereo buffs because they claim they sound better. Class D amplifiers are commonly found in portable devices where power consumption
is a prime concern. There are also Class B, C, and E amplifiers, each with their particular features and applications, as well as hybrid AB, BC, etc, classes."

I know it doesn't exactly anser your question, but it should give you some additional info.

jdhdiggs, thanks for the explanation. It helps! I am curious since Sony has just released a new ES line that employ this technology..

Polkatese - You mean the TA-E9000ES? That is a very nice piece of equipment for sure. Most of the ES line is being redone, receivers and the 777ES SACD player specifically.

I am curious when I read something like Direct Digital Amplifier...is that a true class or marketing hype kinda statement? They look very sleek indeed...

Yep, that be them. The TOTL receiver replaces the STR-DA7ES, and so on. They have more power per and are all 7 channel w/ ability for 9.1? Sheesh, just what I need....9.1, screw that, I would be broke.. I think they are doing the right thing with 7 channel standard. All manu's are probably going to go that route.

Honestly I don't know Sony to create "hype" about the ES line, beings they can't hype anything w/ the regular line either :)
The line is very solid.

Sony has always created their own version of new technology, so I guess that in a way could be considered hype...I am not sure.
