I have the pioneer vsx -820k and for Dolby Pro-Logic IIz it says "Pre out". Now for a bit more i could upgrade to the pioneer vsx - 920k this is a 7 channel reciever but i will not be using the 7 channels. For this one it says "speaker assign". Now im confused on what this means and which is better? Does this have to do with assigning speakers crossover points to which they would use the subwoofer? or is that just automatic? Sorry I'm new to this.

They have nothing to do with each other. The preout is for 2 more effects channels.
The speaker assign is that you can assign those speakers to...well whatever.

@ sheets-
The speaker assign option allows you to choose using those 2 channels as either front height effects, rear (not side) surrounds or front wide depending on your AVR. My Denon allows height or rear and I know some Onkyo use the front wide but you should be able to find the Pioneer manual online in PDF form and glean more info from that. For the $ diff I would prefer having more options for speaker placement. The assignable amp channels may also be for a zone 2 config such as 2 channiel in another room which may suit your needs.
