When the term "rear center" is used, is it the same as "surround back"? I'm assuming a rear center would be used in a 6.1 system?

I think you have it all figured out. A rear center is describing the surround back channel in a 6.1 setup. It may be that, because many people choose to use a center speaker -- convenient because it's easier to find 1 center than 1 bookshelf -- in a 6.1 configuration for the surround rear, that it's description has morphed into 'rear center.' Just a guess.

Just my opinion, but to me it would make more sense to buy a pair of book shelf speakers. Maybe you only get to use 1 of them at this moment, if you have a 6.1 setup, but if everything starts becoming 7.1 down the road, then you have to go find a pair of speakers to replace the back center.

If your HT room is small or medium, mine is medium, I don't think that the benefit of 7.1 would be that big over 6.1. Even if I was 7.1 ready I would stay 6.1, I have enough speakers on the walls now :)
Center channel for the rear is my route.
