Every year it's the same thing...As St Patricks day rolls around, my Irish wife plans her big meal, and on the fateful day, the house is filled with the repugnant odor of corned beef and cabbage. I'm the only one in the house that despises the foul meal, but I suppose that could be because I'm the only one in the house that doesn't have some Irish blood.

It seems everyone I know looks forward to the meal, and looks at me like I'm an alien when I announce my distaste it.

Am I the only one?

So yay or nay?

You can toss brussel sprouts and asperagas into that same pile for me Cannot stand any of it. That smell takes a month to get out of the house afterwards...

I feel your pain.

Is your wife FROM Ireland? I love the accent.

My wife's cooking is so bad, I leave dental floss in the kitchen. The roaches hang themselves.

Can't stand corned beef...boiled cabbage...yuck...hate slaw...BUT...southern fried cabbage...thats a different story.

Fry up some bacon break it into little pieces...pour off most of the bacon grease. Chop the cabbage into strips add onions and even a few thin strips of carrot. Simmer in the bacon gease with a little water until tender. Salt and pepper to taste. Good stuff!

Love it. My Irish wife made two of them. And six Irish soda breads. I made a Baileys bread pudding out of one of them today.

She cooks the cabbage separate from the corned beef, she doesn't braise the cabbage for hours so it's all mush, she saut?ed it in a cast iron pan for about 20 or 25 minutes so it got nice and caramelized, but still had some crunch to it. It was great.

I guess you love it or you hate it, and I'm in the love it camp.

If done poorly, it tastes like dog food and wet diapers. If done correctly, it's heavenly.

Seriously? Your wife is Irish and you're bitching about cabbage one day a year? One of my grandmothers was German and the other was Polish. I had cabbage every Sunday for the first 18 years of my life. Try cabbage with stewed tomatos and stale bread... the Polish call it kapusta, but in fact it is the culinary equivalent of pure evil. Man up and consider it the luck of the Irish that you get to wash it down with green beer.

Can't stand either one!

I remember back in the day, going to grannys house and she would have large crocks of Sauerkraut going in the basment. That odor permeated the whole house.

I'd rather have a dirt sandwhich.

I can see not liking the boiled cabbage... that's a terrible thing to do to almost any vegetable besides a potato, but corned beef is gooood! Maybe not by itself, but I got a recipe for corned beef and barley soup that is Soup Nazi good. And there is no better breakfast food in the world than corned beef hash. Seriously. Beef, bacon, potatoes, and egg all in the same tasty heap. As with so many things in life, it really is all about the synergy.

Was at the local Brewpub last night... they were doing corned beef and cabbage with potatoes. I don't mind the smell, but I stay away from the cabbage. I had them make me a corned beef sammich instead. It was excellent :).

Speaking of kimchi... a former housemate used to LOVE kimchi... he made a batch of it one time... I appended the house rules to include NO KIMCHI MANUFACTURING! The smell didn't leave the house for days.

LOL... we traded places. I came here from Tucson (just went to college there). After 15 years of Seattle, I could definitely stand some Tucson again.

I have tasted of the lutefisk, and I don't know what color beer you'd have to drink to make that stuff taste good! Seriously, how desperate do you have to be to preserve food with lye?

Some cider vinegar on the cabbage, and some spicy brown mustard on the corned beef. Um Um good!

a lot of people overcook the cabbage.. so that's why they dislike it.. cabbage should remain bright green and not grayish when cooked.. should be tender crisp... with some seasonings of your choice..

people overcook broccoli too.. but that's another story....

we had sauerkraut too.. that i could take it or leave it... but it wasn't to strong.. perfect for a sammich.. with spicy brown musturd

And, on topic, I love properly prepared corned beef and cabbage.
