Hi all, first time on here. I have finally decided to upgrade my home audio. I was using a sony htib. I am currently thinking of getting the Monitor 70's and a CS2 center. I'm trying to figure out if I can use the htib reciever (model STR-SE501) with these speakers until I have money to get a new receiver. Here are the specs that I have copied from the manual.

POWER OUTPUT AND TOTAL HARMONIC DISTORTION:
With 8 ohm loads, both channels driven, from 20 - 20,000 Hz; rated 100
watts per channel minimum RMS power, with no more than 0.09% total harmonic distortion from 250 milliwatts to rated output

Rated Power Output at Stereo Mode
8 ohms 20 Hz - 20 kHz THD 0.09%
100W + 100W

Reference Power Output
8 ohms at 1kHz, THD 0.7%
Front: 100W + 100W
Center: 100W
Rear: 100W + 100W

Welcome to Club Polk! I think someone actually asked th esame question yesterday, but with a different brand of htib.

Unfortunately, the short answer is no. It won't sound very good, and you could potentially damage the speakers. If you are really short on cash, look at your local GW, and on CL, and of course ebay. You can easily find an older 5.1 receiver that will sound much better and not risk damage to the speakers for under 100 clams.

Darn, I was really hoping. Anyways, here's what the receiver looks like.

My son has that very receiver. It roasted itself after a couple of years. He got it fixed and actually upgraded for about 75 bucks and his system now sounds pretty decent. We'll see how long it lasts...

I agree, it will work but I would not turn it up very loud and you won't be hearing anything close to the Polk's potential. Just check craigslist and pick up what you can afford and work your way up. Welcome to Club Polk!

I have enough sony card reward points that I could purchase the Sony STR-DH820 for very little out of pocket. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/753329-REG/Sony_STRDH820_STR_DH820_7_1_Channel_AV.html Would this receiver work? As someone just starting out, I have no idea what I'm supposed to be looking for.

Sure it will work, just that someday down the road when you want to move up the speaker food chain, you'll have to sell it and start over. No preouts and limited power, but it will work for the speaker package you have in mind and has the processing you need. So yeah, it will work, and if budget is that tight, then go for it.
Otherwise I would recommend a used pioneer elite or SC version receiver, used can be had for 3-5 hundies on the elites or 6-9 hundies on some SC versions.

Below is the system we have in our bedroom:

Sony STR-DE507
Marantz CD5003
Sony BDP-S360
Polk Monitor 40s Series II
Polk Monitor 30s Series II
Polk Monitor CS1
Polk PSW111 x 2

I can tell you it sounds fine and has not been problematic in any way despite being "smooshed" into a cabinet with inadequate ventilation. I can't remember what I paid for that sony receiver (it's at least 6-7 years old), but I doubt it was more that a couple hundred $$. A good match for the money spent for that system. Pictures are up in the System Forum FYI.

This doesn't look like the typical htib receiver. It should work fine. The key is if the speaker connections on the back are normal or are they some type of special connector or something. Also if it has a built in dvd/bdp the n it will not work most times. That Sony looks like some of the onkyo htiib's.

Use what you have for right now, just watch the volume. In the meantime start saving more money to upgrade to a better receiver that has all the bells & whistles that you want it to have and make sure that it has preouts for separate amplification for future upgrades in power.

The receiver doesn't have any special connectors. It uses regular speaker wire. There's also no built in disc player. I will probably just get the speakers for now and save up for a decent receiver. Thanks for all the responses. I got interested in home audio after listening to my co workers setup. He's got a 5.1 setup using Canton Ergo series speakers and a huge bag end sub.
