View Full Version : Asked to make a recommendation for Denon AVR-2311...

My brother-in-law has asked me to help him with choosing speakers.

Here's the deal -

He already bought a Denon AVR-2311 (105 wpc, no pre-outs) and he wants 7.1. Budget is not really an issue. If he had purchased a better receiver, I'd have had him in LSis, but that ain't happening now... It probably doesn't matter too much, because he just wants good HT sound - no interest really in musical sound quality.

He has a decent-sized, dedicated theater room; I'm guessing about 16x24?? So, I'm thinking I need to recommend some fairly efficient speakers. He's already planning on 2 in-ceiling rears. I thought perhaps the following might do:
RTiA5
CSiA6
FXiA4
RCi80
and then finding a fairly strong sub (HSU or Epik, maybe)

I know it's not ideal (yeah, get an amp), but would this AVR run these speakers?

For sure , they will run but i guess with time and at higher volumes your speakers will be asking more power  , He should really consider to anything with pre outs , and regarding the subs good choices but insted having one tell him to get 2  like the EPIK legends  . If he already thought about the FXi , why not keep all the surrounds with Di/bipole speakers ????

I used to own a Denon AVR-887 years ago which was the ancestor of your model. And it was rated 100/channel. Also had PRE-OUTS back then??

The 887 would have 'no problem' handling that speaker set in a mid-sized room. But the 2311 is newer and lighter in weight so I'm not sure how the power on the 2311 compares with its heavier forefather? I guess it should be OK.

Is there some reason you don't want him to get an AVR with pre-outs...because if he upgrades he may need them...it may even be useful for the A5s?

I know Denon has made it VERY hard to buy a model under 1000 with pre-outs these days. And HK has eliminated pres from the new 36XX series?

He hasn't thought of any of this, because he doesn't really know much about it. He already has two holes in his ceiling for the back surrounds... Also, my room is configured with FXi on the sides and RTi books in the back, and I like it like that!

Consider Paradigm Studio 60s
Why? Other than I see that they are slightly more efficient that the Polks (92 vs 90)... I mean, they better be nicer - they cost a good bit more.

In 7 channel mode, that receiver puts out 66 watts per channel, if he doesn't want to blast it then he'd be ok. Maybe the monitor line would be more suitable for that wattage.

Why not bookshelfs up front with dual subs? take a lot of the heavy lifting off the reciever. RTiA3s with the csi A6 and dual subs would be pretty awesome

Oh man... now THAT"S an idea!!! I never thought of this, but it sounds like it would be a pretty neat setup

You should consider Klipsch RF series. Very efficient, the RF-62 II sensitivity is 97 db, that receiver would have no problem driving a full set up of that series. A lot of people like the upfront brighter sound of the horn tweeters of the Klipsch speakers for 100% HT use like you mentioned it would be used for.

also a good idea on the Klipsch. See,a couple different avenues already.

+1  Consider FXiA6s instead of the '4s

Yes, I found that same bench test data and already informed him of that. That's why I suggested small towers. The funny thing is, he always wants "the best", but that receiver isn't gonna run "the best."

If it were me, I'd do that in a heartbeat. It would be harder to convince him, but I can give it a shot.
