View Full Version : EPI bookshelves, opinions?
Do any of you have some EPI 100s (earlier series--maybe mid to late 70s?)..and if so what do you think?
I've heard a number of EPI floorstanders which I like a lot! A fan of the Air-spring tweeter which is also in the two way 8" EPI 100. Am thinking of picking up a pair. Anyone heard these?

They are good; the tweeter is quite nice. If you like the Polks of that vintage, I reckon you'll like the EPIs.

I have a set. I think they are 100V's. Inverted dome tweeters. Impressive performers. Not real sensitive but they are stout. Those inverted domes are smooth but can get tinny at high volumes. But honestly, you have to push them way past comfortable/safe listening levels to find that bad spot.
They are "bright" I guess you could say. They have a slight midrange dip which is probably what causes it. But the only time I've ever noticed it is on classical stuff with like bassoons and trombones being featured. Otherwise they are surprising performers and have an impressive low end for what they are. The kick like a mule.
That said, they are neat speakers that are a little different from lots of other stuff that was on the market then. They seem to go anywhere from $20 for stuff in good condition to $250 for complete garbage. Yes, I did not mix that up. Honestly though, I wouldn't pay more than $100 for them. They aren't as rare as some would have you believe and the 100V went through many variations it seems so dissimilar drivers make some believe that they are "special edition" models and worth extra coin. They aren't. They aren't really ground breaking so they aren't really historically significant. At the same time, they aren't just either and would make a great mighty mite set of speakers for a giant killer. I used the pair I had as the front and rear center channels in an HT and they excelled at that. I'd think they'd work awesome in that respect.
My pair looked just like these:

If you find yourself looking for any parts and or info try:
I have ordered grill badges from him for some Genesis Physics speakers. He is a little slow, but no problems with my order.
The pair is in mint condition...sold by an audiophile. They look 'exactly' like your models John.
Already made an offer at a very good price and locked them up.

They are great, and very flat frequency response. Certainly best buys.
I'll upgrade the capacitors and add banana posts one day.
Perhaps that will tighten up the sound.
