View Full Version : Midwest LSiM Demo Gathering

OK, so I am going to try to organize a Midwest LSiM Demo get together. We will only be able to get one set of the new LSiM, either the 703 or the 707. If we can work it out, the date would need to be flexible as I do not know right now when the speakers would be hitting this part of the country. Dorokusai will have more info on that if there is some serious interest here.
I am centrally located to Chicago, Indy, Grand Rapids, Lansing and not that far of a drive from Wisconsin or Detroit/Ann Arbor either. I am in Niles, MI (49120)
Here is a list of my Equipment...
Pre
Adcom GFP-750 Pre - 2-Channel
Onkyo TX-NR808 - Home Theater
HK AVR354 - Bedroom 2-Channel
Amps
Parasound HCA-3500 (Upgraded with Rubycon Black Gate Caps and numerous other Audio Grade components) (500x2 into 4 ohms)
Parasound HCA-2200II
Paraosund HCA-1500A
Parasound HCA-2205
Source
Logitech Squeezebox Touch (FLAC)
Pioneer DV-79AVi
Pioneer DV-47ai
Pioneer BDP-05FD
I have a smattering of interconnects and speaker cables.
Interconnects
Full complimnet of Ben's Silver
Full compliment of Outlaw PCA
Some lower grade Audio Quest
Speaker Cables
AudioQuest 48V DBS CV4
AudioQuest Granite
PS Audio xStream
MIT EXp 2
Plain old 12 gauge with decent bananas
Current Speakers
Upgraded SDA SRS 2 (Pin/Blade Version)
Magnepan MMG
LSi9 (2 Pairs)
LSi7 If someone wanted to hear them
SDA CRS+
I also have 2 Epik Sentinels I run from time to time managed with an Outlaw ICBM in my 2 Channel rig if someone wanted to hear the 703's with a sub. I could even pull out the TC Sounds LMS Ultra 5400 in a sealed enclosure if needed :D
My room is 12x20 with the audio situated on the long side.
I think that is pretty much it for demoing purposes.
Any interest? I am thinking it would increase our chances of getting some in the area if we were to host a gathering.
If we can make this work, is there a preference for the 703 or the 707? I did read one of the reviews here that they actually preferred the 703...

Depending on the date it could work if I could get down there for a weekend. I would be coming from central wi so it's about 5 hour drive Maybe a bit more

You could come visit your old Sharp projector! Would you have any other equipment you could bring for demo purposes?
I would love to get my ears on a nice external DAC, Tube Preamp and amp, or maybe even an Oppo Universal Player...

This sounds like a great location and your gear is way over qualified. I can get the LSiM 703 to you faster than the LSiM 707, since the West Coast gang will have them tied up for the next month or so. You make the call Don....

You'll crap your pants at the sound coming out of the 703s, but you can't go wrong with the 707s either. Like Russ said on Facebook earlier, they're the best bookshelf under $3k, hands down.
p.s. that's a SICK equipment list. I envy you.

The 703 definitely have my attention. Any Midwest guys opposed to the 703 over the 707?
Thanks! I have been really lucky finding great deals on used stuff. :)

For me personally as long as we have the appropriate "older" version to do a A B comparison it doesnt matter. So since you have the LSi 9's the 703's would work.
Would be interesting to do a LSi 9, modded crossover LSi 9, LSi 703 comparison.....
I might be in totally dependent upon date. I have some major deadlines approaching in October I have been working/planning/focusing on since Mid April that I need to make sure I can meet first.

I would love to hear that comparison also! Unfortunately, I do not have a modded set of LSi9's. I do have 2 pairs, one pair in my bedroom setup and one in my Home Theater. I just don't have the extra $$$ to mod the second pair right now. If someone has a pair, I would really like to hear them. Also, my LSi9 stands are DIY and suck, I just thought of that :) If someone has a set to bring, that would be awesome. I really need to invest in some good stands :D
Anyone have any modded LSi9's out there that might be attending this get together/demo?
Any ideas on dates? Saturdays always work best for me. The only Saturday that doesn't work for me that I am aware of is August 13th, which is a little soon anyways! Some Sundays work, but I am usually pretty busy.

Saturdays work best for me since the wife works, so I can play during the normal work day.
So for me personally a start time of like 10 would rock (hate to get up soo early on a off day but w/e) to like maybe 6ish (I would probably leave earlier).

A start time of 10:00 sounds good to me. OK, here are some dates, I will keep the list updated, but let me know which of these work... Just reply back to the thread to let me know. I still need to verify we can get the speakers for these dates, but lets get this going and then I will contact dorokusai.

OMG I moved out of Minneapolis for NYC. I wish I was there for this demo. You guys should do it with recording legend Steve Albini. At his studio (electrical audio)

You should call him and see if he would be into it. This would be amazing!

I am very excited about the comparison. I am REALLY hoping someone has modded LSi9s for the demo. It would help me make my decision between modding one of my pairs of LSi9s or breaking down and getting the LSiM 703s!!!!
Any other interest? I am thinking September 10th, 17th, or 24th... Which of those dates work best for everyone?

The dates that might work for me are: 8/27, 9/03, 9/10, 9/17
Of those I think the weekend of the 17th might work the best for me. My wife is going out of town with her mom for her birthday. I forget if she is leaving Saturday afternoon, or Sunday. Whatever day she leaves (depending on what time) would be best for me since I could be gone all day and not have to check with her
I am checking with her now and will get back to you hopefully today....
If I am able to attend I could bring my laptop (or desktop if no one has a usb to rca dac). They both have a massive amount of FLAC files so we could do some total digital listening.

Don the 17th will likely not work for me :frown:. The wife wants to spend the day together since she is leaving late morning on the 18th to go to Chattanooga.
So I would more than likely be able to make the 18th (still not 100% sure in case things change) but the 17th is very unlikely. I will check and see if she would want to come if on the 17th, but not sure that will happen.

Be jealous! I am sitting hear enjoying the LSiM 703!!! Gotta say, first impressions, SMOOTH!!! The bass is also VERY surprising. Tight and very present for a "Bookshelf". Loving them! I have been getting some serious ear time on the LSiM 703s, and they just keep growing on me. Whoever can make it to the demo at my place really owes it to themselves to show up if only to hear these!!! I have some stands on the way that will make a huge difference too! Heck, right now they are on top of my CRS+ which are on their stock stands! HARDLY the appropriate ear level or anything close to right for that matter.
Maybe it I the percocet talking , but I am loving these speakers!!!!

I picked up the 28" Skylan Dual post stands that Gaara had for sale here. I dd some research on them and they looked like a really nice stand, and I can fill them. Just trying to decide between lead shot or sand......
Don
JimAckley
08-29-2011, 02:06 AM
Nice stand! I think I borrowed the SKY-4P24 (or something very similar) from Russ when I had the 703s. They weren't even filled and they were heavy as hell! They were the perfect height for me since I lounge back on my couch and you sink in the cushion
I've never filled a stand before, despite having two different sets of fillable stands. At first thought, I would figure sand since it will never have a chance at rattling, plus if you ever decide you want to move your stands, lead shot in two of those large tubes is gonna give you a hernia, haha.
Would it be impractical to combine the shot and sand to give you the ultimate combination of weight and best use of space?
dorokusai
08-29-2011, 04:41 AM
There's no need to combine shot and sand since they are effectively doing the same thing. However, if you have ringing, it would be a smart thought to use sand as a buffer and to help dissipate heat....but that's really stretching the minutae of this tweak.

One other tidbit for anyone on the fence!!! I sent off my GFP-750 today to be upgraded! Lots of caps and resistors changed out. Power supply upgrades... Lots of Nichicon Muse KZ!!! Good Stuff!
I also swapped out the LMS Ultra 5400 today and put in one of my Custom TC Sounds 18" Drivers (Basically a Pro 5100 top assembly with a ferrite motor and dual 1 ohm voice coils). Man this thing is QUICK in a sealed enclosure and has some serious slam in the mid and upper bass regions. That was one of my major complaints about the LMS Ultra 5400, sick amounts of LOW bass, but it left a lot to be desired above about 50 Hz... The custom driver is 1 or 2 dB shy under 20 Hz of the 5400, but I can live with that!!!
This custom driver performs a LOT like the Pro 5100, but in a different voice coil config and no Neo. The best part is that I got 2 of them for the cost of 1 5100!!!
Should be a fun Demo!!!

Oh another thing! Anyone who has any DVD-A or SACD disks, please bring them! I only have a couple and I would love to hear some more! FLAC files too, my SB Touch can handle up to 24/192.
Unfortunately, it appears that much of what I like to listen to is not available in high res formats
I did just find this - The Beatles - The Collection Boxset MFSL  converted to 24/96 FLAC!!!!
Is anyone bringing any equipment? I am not sure if my DAC is going to be here by then or not... It is a toss up since their production was delayed. :frown:

I will post an excel sheet of everything here later (MediaMonkey is on the desktop right now) listing everything I have for folks to pick through.
PS the wife is a HUGE Beatles fan so I think we have all the CD's they ever produced on FLAC to compare.

What do you use to play the files from your laptop?
If we were to use my system, we would need to copy everything over to my music server for my SB Touch to see it. That would be fine with me, but I just wanted to put it out there.

I could bring it on a Esata or USB Hdd if that worked better for you. I have a couple extra lying around with more than enough space.
But with my laptop I could just jack into your network and then we could play from your Squeezebox Touch. I have built in wireless or an Ethernet port as well.

We will figure it out! I have 2 gig ethernet switches in my living room that run down to the core switch in the basement... I just haven't tried to get a squeezebox to talk to multiple computers before. Regardless, we will figure it out.

Have either of you considered a high-end sound card for your computer? While I'm sure .flac on your SB is good, no handheld device that I've heard has held up vs. my laptop's Creative X-Fi Notebook card. Even the onboard card sounds like chopped liver in comparison. I think I still have a, Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit external, a SB Audigy 2 ZS for a desktop PCI slot, and a SB Audigy 2 ZS Notebook lying around if you guys wanna give any of them a shot, especially for your little shindig.

Bass was decent but not great (wife kept making me turn it down due to the time at night). Still missing something, but hopefully REW will help me figure out where (and if its not just a sub limitation).
Cool Job, I am the IT Help Desk/Business Analyst guy for a defense firm (i.e. attorneys) for State Farm. My primary job this year is seeing how we can leverage new technology/processes to become more efficient in what we do and how we do it. This year though my big project is getting our office ready to switch our database management system and our document assembly system, and all the revamping/updating that requires. Needless to say its been a sucky year so I need this trip lol.....

If I would do anything it would be to use a external asynchronous USB DAC (think HTR, V-Dac, Musiland Monitor etc). They cost about the same as one of those graphic cards and work better from what I have read.

Good eye and you mean the LSi9s
I am loving this combo, pretty insane! Believe it or not, those little LSiM 703s keep up with that sub! I still have to do a room sweep and EQ the sub in its new location, but it is already WAY better where it is now then where it was before. It used to be on the right side of my TV and it must have been in a room null because I could barely get anything impactful out of it. But... it was really the only choice with SRS 2.
I must say, I am very pleased with the Skylan stands. If I ever but stand new, these will definitely be on my short list. Even without being filled with shot, they are very sturdy and solid.
I was hoping some pictures would help lure out any lurkers and convince them to make the trip

Don, SCompRacer might be in for the 703's after your place, if he is able to make it.
If not I will talk to SolidSqual (Mike) about letting me have em for a week (18th-23rd) and then meeting up the week after that (so the 24/25th) for him to take them to the Columbus area and then shoot them east toward NY possibly, or south toward West Virginia
I am fine with anything, as long as Mark (dorokusai) approves everything.

Speak now or forever hold your peace.
So far with you being the exception leroy, no one else from the Chicago or WI area will be attending (or no one that has let Don know such).
If you show up and then want to shoot them to the Chicago area that would be fine too, but we need to get this in gear soon.
SCompRacer has scheduling conflicts so he wont be able to attend or pickup the speakers currently.

I know there are folks from the IL area that really want to get their ears on the LSiM 703s. Let EndersShadow know so we can get the plan together. As of right now, unless someone speaks up, they are heading towards Ohio.

Speaking of next weekend... We shoud start getting a final list together of who is definitely coming.
I would also like to start thinking about food and who is willing to bring what food and drink wise. I will cover pizza for lunch if that works for everyone. Let me know if that is good. Is there a beer preference we can agree on? Sides? Looking for ideas....
I am also curious what gear everyone will be bringing with them.
Thanks!

I'm coming. I can bring:
Prism Orpheus w/ MacMini (Pure Vinyl)
Quicksilver MidMonos
MAC CuQ speaker cables
Emerald Physics Interconnects (Same as Mogami cable used by 10Audio)
I like beer . . . craft or good ol' bud light. Let me know about food. I can pick something up. My car is small and will likely be filled with boxes of gear.

Darn, I would have loved to attend this but I have two major events next week that I must be at.
I would love to check these out, would it be possible to send them my way? Im in Chicago, southeast corner to be exact, border with Indiana I'm literally 5 minutes from the Horseshoe Casino in Whitting). I would love to audition them with my gear...this is what I currently have in my main rig:
LSi25's with 2 LSiC's, LSiFX's, FXi30's for the rear, and a PSW1000. All this powered by 2 Sunfire Cinema Grand Amps and a TGP-401 pre. I also have a couple of Technics turntables to listen to vinyl.
Anybody would be welcomed to come over and I can also pass them on to Leroy or whoever when i'm done.
I really wish I could have made the trip though...

Don I realized something about my laptop.....its got a dedicated graphics card with a HDMI out.
So we can hook it into your AVR and do everything that way so you dont need to mess with setting up your Squeezebox to do anything regarding my gear.

Unfortunately, unless I pull the AVR up from the basement, or pull down the AVR from my bedroom, I have no HDMI inputs. In the 2 channel rig is an Adcom GFP-750 2 channel Pre, which will be back tomorrow! The Yamaha has no HDMI either.
On another note, the home theater is probably not going to be cleaned up sadly for several reason. First, I have been working every day, at least 14 hours a day, for the past week... Secondly, I am working on selling a bunch of salt water fish tank crap and it is taking up all the room! Sorry guys! But we can try to bring up the other sub to demo if you would like, but I will need some help
Dan, we will work it out... The squeezebox would probably be easier and better sound quality anyways. We will figure it out.

Wife might like one or two. I myself am more of a Diet MD, or Smirnoff drinker (but like 2 or 3 max due to having Crohn's). I will see if she has any requests Beer wise.
Don just to save myself some time, rather than picking up chips, soda, meat or veggie tray myself and bringing, I figured I would just give you like 20 -25 bucks to cover the cost of em and help a little on the pizza..
Let me know if thats cool or if you still want me to pick them up myself.

$ is cool. No big deal. We won't need much if it is just 6 of us or so.
You prefer Diet Mountain Dew? Any other soda requests? Chip types? I might grab a couple 6 packs of some craft beers or something like that. Nothing crazy. We have a grocery store a few minutes from the house, so I might just have my wife run over there Saturday morning to pick up a few things.

Sorry, I have been lazy today. The wife leaves tomorrow for Chattanooga for a couple days so I wanted to spend today with her.. I am hoping to have my write up of the meeting at Don's shortly, waiting on a couple last pieces of information about room dimensions and whatnot.
I also plan to post another write up about tomorrow night. I am having my dad over to listen to some music. We will be sending music from computer (recorded in FLAC) via HDMI to my Integra DRT 5.9 and from there via my Zone 2 pre-outs using Signal Cable Analog 2 interconnects to my HK3490.
Whole point is to be able to A/B them side by side. The HK can run both 8 ohm (LSi 703) and 4 ohm (LSi 15) loads and let me A&B back.
I am aware its not exactly a fair comparison but thats kinda the point.
That and the point is my dad isnt a huge audiophile but he likes to listen to music. So he has a totally unbiased opinion so I want to hear his thoughts and impressions.
I will share those as well as my wife's from Don's and mine (after an extended listening session or two)
