Even though none of my headphones (the most expensive being the Grado SR60s, at $70.00 when I purchased them 13 years ago) are over $100.00, I have heard of the reputation of Stax's electrostatic headphones. I am somewhat surprised by the low selling price of the company though.

Chinese speaker manufacturer, Edifier, purchased headphone manufacturer, Stax, for roughly $1.5 million (http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/chinese-speaker-maker-edifier-purchases-famous-electrostatic-headphone-maker-stax)

No one in the US wanted to invest in electrostatic headphones?

the STAX 'earspeakers' are (were...?) absolutely phenomenal.

They don't sell a high volume of them compared to every other headphone manufacturer, which is a couple hundred.

I think I know the "earspeakers" you're speaking of. I'm hoping someone will bring a pair to the next Bay Area Head-Fi meet (in February 2012) so that I can experience them.

Got to agree with Doro on this. They are boutique compared to most.

They do sound awesome though. I heard the big square pair a while back and they sounded great. The clarity was just amazing.
