Details forthcoming, stay tuned!

Update - My good friend Chris Sommovigo will be cabling the room with Black Cat Cables. Those who attended CAF might remember him, he was right across the hall from the Polk room Mark was running - AND he's promised some goodies to raffle off to those in attendance!

Update - Talked to some more friends in the industry and Marc Phillips and Colleen Cardas (exclusive US importer of Unison Research), and they are going to provide some STELLAR back end gear for the Polk room! We shall be tubed ala Unico!

Update - Confirmation of Polk LSiM 705's being shipped down tomorrow to start break in, plus some cool raffle items and freebies! Rumor of a special guest making his 2nd appearance in Texas for the event - nothing confirmed yet, but if it goes through he'll be signing 8x10's for his fans.

More to come!

Cheers,
Russ

Initial post updated, full speed ahead, this is going to be a GOOD one. Be there. Make it so.

As an aside, I've been talking with Wayne as we organize this grass roots show - and there is going to be a must be present to win raffle sometime Saturday afternoon, and guests will have a ballot box to vote for 'Best in Show', for their favorite room. The winner gets nothing more than to proudly wear that badge until next year.

Cheers,

Tried calling you a few days ago. I picked up some RT55's with the CS1000p and had to fill up a few miles away from your house. I was going to see if you wanted to spend some time with the bookies again since they won't see time in my system and I'm in no real hurry to get rid of them.

The 705's are here, but they are getting nothing but break-in until the show. I doubt I will listen critically until I have them at the show, and on some gear they deserve. That being said, I will post my honest thoughts on them for what it's worth.

I'm fine with it either way. If they want to measure the LSiM705 in an Embassy Suites conference room, go for it. I was going with what he said on Audioroundtable, eluding to a 2-way shelf or small floorstander, if everyone wants a 4-way Polk in there, be my guest. Not sure what it will exactly show, but sure! I'd love to hear them on Dodd Audio gear!

Russ, thanks for hosting the Polk room and the T-shirts. My youngest son really enjoyed the 705s and the show today.

He has some R30s in his room and asked if I had some better speakers than those he could use. I think LSAF has him thinking about audio now.

The Polk's and ahem Ushers... Bad ass.... I did spend some time with those among others. I am also just not a fan of arrays and adding a zillion speakers to it. The Polk's sounded amazing with that 12 watt or so tubey. Overall, enjoyed LSAF, tunes, bros and brews...

wallstreet
05-05-2012, 11:07 PM
I absolutely enjoyed the show as well. Tubes galore, spinning wax, it was almost a time warp. Except for the fact the speaker quality has improved significantly. Every room, and there were too many rooms to count, had great setups. It was audio heaven. Each speaker and setup each having its own flavor, its own signature sound. There was something for everyone. And of course the bloke from the Netherlands with a 9' tall 3.5' wide electrostatic speaker. WTH!? I asked why, and he said because I can. And that sums up why all these people are building outstanding speakers, because they can. Great job LSAF!

RuSsMaN

Well it's 1:27am. I'm packed and ready to go at 7am and in actual physical pain. I hope it was good for the FEW of the many local Polkies that took the time to show up and rep CP. I heard at least a dozen times today that we had the best room. Period.

That's enough for me. I'm done. Things are beginning to brew behind the scenes to try and turn LSAF into a profit for someone and I will not be part of that. I'm happy to go out on a high for Polk this year. Polk was hot. I heard rooms that I couldn't believe how bad they sounded in comparison.
I've got some photos and youtube vids to process after a LONG nap tomorrow.

Whatever. Cheers.

Those 705's are superb speakers and should be heard if one has any interest in the LSiM line. In comparison to the Linn towers also at the show with the same MSRP, there's no contest. The Element bookies were my favorites, but at $4k a pair, they ought to sound nice.

Russ, thanks again for hosting. Ron, thanks for dinner. That really helped with the drive home.

Dream on Marvin love ya man those babies are mine, it will be awhile...

LSAF was definitely a hit

Russ shows keeping it simple with great gear provided by Polk, and Unison http://colleencardasimports.com/ proved to be a winning combo
a little Polk room highlight story:
"An older gentlemen in town for business who had no clue about the LSAF but an avid music lover who had some great raw piano recordings on his Ipod walked into the Polk rm right after leaving the Legacy, asked Russ if he could plug-in of course Russ obliged. The music piece was very detailed, complex, and strong. With gracious nod of approval and a smile his Polk session was the most accurate he had heard."

Anyway thanks Russ,Colleen, Marvin, Skip, Danny (assimilated), Halen, and special thanks to Tracy(THSmith) for a great deal on my treasure tubes, and for everyone sharing the moments and music on my first piece of tube gear paired with Usher's

I as well felt the same way. I have many pictures and videos of various setups. Will post within a week or two myself. I saw speakers the size of mountains to crazily overpriced bookies. Cables, tubes galore. This is really where I found simplicity was the best. I am now inclined more towards Pass Labs, and Melody equipment. There were so many rooms. But in the end, LSIM's made me happy. Ron's Usher's, that is something different for another day. I had a blast...

Nice looking room, Russ. Thanks for championing the cause.

Did anyone get to hear the Super V's?

I thought they sounded good but it was hard for me to get a good feel from them. I did not feel like they pulled me into the music. It could of been that people were milling around and a fair bit of comotion. I was in the back row, it just did not feel intimate.

I had a great time at the show.

Russ, the Polk room was great as always, thought I found the setup this year to be the most impressive one I've heard yet. Simple and clean, very nice. Folks, you NEED to get your ears on the 705, I think they're the better of the two towers, and certainly at least in the conversation.

Ron, helluva setup you've got there. The fact that you 'got it right' on your first real attempt at 2 channel audio is commendable, many people go through alot of years and alot more setups and never end up with sound like that.

Skip, we need to get you over and gets your ears on some Maggies. They're not for everyone, but they're a speaker everyone should listen to at least once. We'll talk about it at Jim's in a couple weeks.

Marvin, you got anything for sale?

Did I miss Jim, or did he not make it out?

That's basically the same impression I had on the Super Vs T, don't think i really got a good feel for them.

A few notes I had:

1 - My favorite speaker at the show was actually the bookshelf in the Elemental room. They were pricey at $4k, but they really grabbed me. I'm going to be keeping an eye on those.
2 - I've now heard all three LSiM speakers and the 705 are my favorite of the bunch. They're a fantastic speaker and getting that sound out of 12 watts is unreal.
3 - The Ushers in Ron's room were just fantastic speakers. They were just a tad hot on the top end for my tastes but that could easily have been the new cables in the mix, I bet with cable burn in those would smooth out quite nicely. I definitely want to hear a smaller speaker in that same line.
4 - I also really liked the line arrays upstairs, they sounded great running off the ICE amps in that all-in-one thing those guys were selling.
5 - The electrostats were nice, but not my cup of tea. Those are great for electronic music and the imaging was very nice on a Coltrane record we had playing, but I have way too much rock music in my collection for those to be my choice. You play some Muse through those and your ears are going to bleed.
6 - I didn't like the Legend Audio speakers. I'm sure they're a fantastic speaker and would spec really well with a flat FR curve and all that, I just didn't like them, I like my speakers a bit more lively than that. Those speakers are to audio as all the over-engineering and over-producing is to music today - it may be a clean sound but I don't like it.
7 - I'm likely in the minority on this one, but I really liked the active/passive bookies in the SoundField room. Of everything at the show those are what I'll likely buy first because I have a perfect application for them. I'm a sucker for a sealed enclosure and these fit the bill quite nicely.
8 - The Raven Audio stuff is purdy, and expensive. Of everyone at the show, I felt like they had more focus on selling stuff than the others. We're not talking user car salesman, but they were kind of sales-pitchy. I didn't really get a good feel for the big arrays downstairs, the guy kept playing mono recordings and I didn't connect with those at all.
9 - As always the Pi Speaker room was great, especially if you like that sweet midrange. I can only take so much of Adele though so didn't spend as long in there as I did last year.
10 - The speaker that I really wanted more time with was the Super V. I was very excited to hear those and just never got any alone time with them.

Those Soundfield monitors didn't do it for me. It might've just been the dialing on the sub, but I couldn't get into them. I also thought they were highly unappealing aesthetically. I can't help but see cheapo Pioneer car subs every time I look at them.

Dan, everything Ron had in the system was brand new, so everything is going to need some time to break in. I'd be interested in hearing those once it all gets worked in.

as far as ron's system there was a night and day difference from when i heard them friday to saturday night.
the soundfields did overdo it a bit with the bass but when i found out you could control it like a sub with different settings on the plate amp that really put them in a different light.
skip, he makes different finishes and besides it's a box, he could always shape them like the element monitors and charge you $4000:lol:

It was more about the drivers than the "box". I like naked speakers and I just couldn't do that with those. Your mileage obviously varies though. For that kind of money, I might have to consider some Dali's instead...

I've heard Danny's systems many many times before, and something was just wrong this year. I don't know if it was because the amps he intended to use had a hiccup and he had to make a last minute sub - it was just off. The group I was with at the time, some were shaking their heads and I reassured them this was far from his best showing, that I have heard the audio magic he is a capable of, and today wasn't it for some reason. Danny is a good friend of mine, has been for years, and that's me just being honest. I was upset about it to say the least.

Thanks Ken! Keeping it simple next year too, but thinking about vinyl and maybe some tape in the mix! As an aside, if you found cheap airfare, the hotel suites are $99/night - the little lady and you would totally dig this event. Just keep it on the back burner for consideration.

Cheers

That's ok, I've been called a wuss many times because the only alcohol I like is rum (I also found one kind of vodka I like). I'm a sucker for a rum and coke, but all that other stuff tastes like shaving lotion to me

I was just happy to be able to share some drinks with others. Would've loved to continue through the night, but that wouldn't have gone over too well. I was expected home, so I drank as fast as I could to get a buzz early and still make it home.

Russ, you're one guy I wouldn't try to drink for drink with. You've got so many miles on that liver of yours now that I know I couldn't compete.

I guess I'm a wuss too since It's all about the rum. However, I do enjoy beer now and again. ;)
