View Full Version : JBL subs
I'm looking for a cheap but good sub to replace some Audiobahn Performer Series AWC12T9's. These subs sound like crap, I bought a 2 cu. ft sealed box with tha Audiobahns used from a guy I know and I just want some better subs. I was looking at the JBL Gt120'sor the 120D's because of the cheap price. But I dont know too much about them nor have I ever heard them. So what does everyone think about em?

I think that if you go and buy the JBL's you will be both surprised and pleased. Probably one of the most under-rated subs out there. They certainly aren't the best but for thier price point, they are very hard to beat. They should work in that box too. If you want to head that way, it isn't a bad decision at all.
Then again, you haven't given anyone an idea of what kind of sound you are looking for. The JBL's will be loud and they can do both SPL and SQL but if you are leaning more one way than the other then you may have other choices that you have not yet considered.
So, what are you looking to accomplish here? Answering that would help get you a better, more accurate answer.

that and what's your price range and do you already have an amp and what is it...
Well I listen to mostly rap and i like my bass to hit hard and tight. I like the way that the sealed box Keeps the bass accurate but it still has that ground shaking bass too. I have an MTX Thunder502, 125 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms. Its actually a little power house and probably pushes more then that. I could spend up to $120 per speaker so that probably gives me more options. But the thing is my buddy has two GT100D's and I just cant get over the air those things move. When I got out of the car I knew I had to get me the 12's!!

The 502 will push over 500 watts bridged at 4 ohms. If you want to go with the JBL subs, get the dual voice coil models (120D) and wire the coils series and the subs together parallel to get the full power from the amp. It will really slam. I'm not totally sure the rms of the subs, but if they can take 250-275 watts a piece you'll get some good slam for a great price. :)
Here you go, Crutchfield has a deal on a pair of those subs... $149 for the pair...
Those are the single voice coil (4 ohm) but you might wanna call Crutchfield and see if they have the dual or an 8 ohm.

i agree with Cman -- with that amp you should go with 8 ohm (or dual 4 ohm coil) subwoofers... that'll give you WHAM BAM THANK YOU MAAM outa your subs, as opposed to only 125 x 2.
anywho -- i think in your price range, the JBL GT would be the best sub -- the alpine type S is in that range, and its a decent sub, but its not going to put out the amount of bass that you'd want for some solid rap tracks...
the polk MM2104 would be a pimp sub for your car too but you'd need a different box and a different amp.
Well I ordered the DVC ones and they come tomorrow!!! I cant wait, but I will keep you posted on how the sound. Thanks for all the info!!
