newbie amp question

right now i'm powering all of my speakers with my onk tx-sr600 but i've got a dumb question in case some day i decide to buy an amp.

if i buy just a two-channel amp to power my mains, how do i control/match the volume level between the amp and the receiver? or does the receiver send some volume information on the pre-out signal?

Yes the avr controls the volume if thats what you are asking. The voltage signal to the power amp is controlled by the preamp (avr).
