A co-worker was asking me about suggestions on a rear projector bigscreen. I havent taken that plunge yet, so I havent done my homework. He will be watching 95-100% TV broadcast (cox cable I believe) as he doesnt even have a DVD player yet. I'll fix that soon enough. I've informed him that he would want a 4:3 ratio HDTV of his choosing for this reason. His budget is in the $1500-2000 range. You guys have any suggestions?

I have an Hitachi 57",have had very good luck with it so far. With a pro-scan DVD hooked up to it,the picture quality is remarkable.
I am still waiting for Dish Network to come out with an HD receiver, they tell me 12/01/03,so not too far off!!!
I would reccomend a 16X9 format (wide screen) you can still have a 4X3 on that type of set.
Hitachi,Samsung,Toshiba,Mitts. they all offer a good HDTV in that price range,he'll probably have to go with a 42"-51" model for that kind of money...

I got the 42" Samsung HCN4226W last month, and so far I am very happy with it. Its normal street price is $1399, but I was able to get it for $1125. This TV is pretty good on PIC Quality but a little week on convenince features (i-e only one user defined PIC setting and no Split Screen PIP).

I own two high-end Hitachi big screens, one is a 1999 4:3 53" and the other is a 2003 16:9 57".
Conclusions...
1.)Regular TV looks much better on the older TV.
2.)The HD channels look awesome on the widescreen.
3.)DVD's look great on both.
IMO Hitachi makes the best traditional projection big screens.
Hope this helps,
