Edited: Just needed to vent out some frustrations gents :)

Please, help your CC employee's out by NOT doing the following things:

A) Ask the video salesmen which TV looks best. You have eye's, hopefully taste, but obviously not much "up-stairs".... If you cannot determine which picture look's better, perhaps you should invest your money into an eye-exam, before a tv.

B) Ask the video salesmen why flat-screen is better. See above.

C) Toy around with the TV settings and leave them as is. Yes, we work there, but this does not mean we want to fix up your shit. If you go through the trouble of messing up the tv settings, please take the time to put things back the way they were.

D) Shop from the phone. If you have no clue what your after, please dont try to shop from the phone. Those who deal with me often experience "technical difficulties" with the phone line.

E) Ask a salesmen which TV stand would look best in your home. None of us have been in your home, and unless your some young, hot girl, none of us want to. You should be capable of choosing the proper furnature to compliment your home. We dont care.

F) Speak Spanish. Not to sound like a tight-jeaned, spur laden, cowboy hat American....but if you live in this country, give us the damn curtousy of speaking english. I had to do a sale via: Alta Vista's Translator..... It was hilarious at the time, but it gets old...very quick. I simply will make it harder on you by responding in Portuguese. And eye for an eye...

G) Ask about Home Theater in a Box systems. Ok, This is my personal pet-peeve. I cant stand HTIB system's. Look, they are cheap. Every last one of them, they are all shit.. choose your plate. Do you want shit piled high, do you want manucured shit, do you want diariah *sp*? It's all there, just ready for you to take home so you can enjoy your "suRR-OUND sound".

H) Ask about combination tape/reel to reel/turntables combo's. They dont exist. Let it go.... And no, DVD players do not have "suRR-OUND" speakers built into them..

OK - Didnt get through the alphabet, but I do feel better.

One last thing:

To that gentlemen I delt with today. You made a wise choice leaving the demo room. Your vacant expression on your face, coupled with your demand for a manual on the Velodyne CHT-12 was nothing short of giving me a hernia. It's good that my slamming of the tag on the sub, the look on my face, and the near-yell of my voice gave you a hint that it was time to go...

Cheers

Ahhhhh, life in retail....ain't it grand? Looking foward to my 5:15 am - 10pm shift the day after Thanksgiving. Customers, please be aware that in the midst of my 17 hour shift, I may become slightly cranky We will be out of the $20 POS dvd player by noon so do not come looking for it at 7pm and become angry upon discovering all 2500 are gone. :D

Wow Sean. Sounds like a rough day for you.

Most people want service. That's all. Fortunately, you are one that can also provide some good advice to people who know nothing about audio / video. A lot of times the silly questions are just attempts of indirectly asking for your advice. I guess its kind of embarassing for someone to ask "Well you know, I really don't know squat about tvs so which one do you recommend?" Instead people ask "Which one do you think looks the best?" Its human nature, especially in us testosterone carrying males. Most men want to think they know something about everything but if they are not up with the times in the rapidly changing technological sector they are left back in the dust. Just think about it..... how many men would stop and ask for directions if lost?? Many would just wander around until they figure it out. I'm not trying to stereotype all us guys ... just a fact that these types do exist.

Being in retail sales takes patience. Patience is a virtue.

My advice is just to relax. You get paid by the hour right?? Well, if you approach it in a way that you can help people and this somehow gives you a feeling of accomplishment that someone took your advice, that has to make you feel good right?

Or am I totally in left field with this one?? Is it really that bad?

Paul,

Where have you been guy? There are many, many pertruding hole's which I simply cannot mention here on these boards. Such things that make the day *that* much more difficult...

Some people can tolerate and have patience... others cannot. 10 guesses where I fall, and the first 9 don't count. ;)

However, the path towards audio enlightenment has been blessed unto many unsuspecting individuals... Those who have fallen victim to Bose have seen the light - and it was good. I do what I can.... and each Polk system sold gives me a wealth of pride knowing someone spent their money wisely. Its the only reason I have stayed at this job... for just that moment.

Where have you been guy?

I've been lurking around a little. Keeps me from getting new ideas and spending money I guess:D

No really, I've been swamped with work and shutdowns and being the "interim" boss at times.

Football season too. Big LSU fan / alumni and they are on a roll. There is always a void when football season ends.. but fortunately golf season starts shortly after that.

Well, good to see you got the frustration off your chest. Its a good thing to do sometimes. People want to get the most out of their hard earned money you know. I bet a lot of the probing questions you get on advice are about stuff like which items get returned the most and / or have reliability problems etc. Again, the "which one do you think is best" indirect question comes to mind.

Oh, by the way, the guy who was looking for the Velodyne manual, I used to do the same thing sometimes.. looking for specs I suppose?

sorry you guys in retail have such stupid consumers to deal with. Well at least you make good money there. ;)

my all time favorite call into my office was one lady needed the phone number to 9-1-1
so she calls the TV station for it.. smart huh?

Sean,
You sound pretty knowlegable about consumer electronics (working at CC and all) so maybe you will know. I'd give you a call but I don't have the number. Are you sure they don't make a tape/turntable component? I'm really looking for a new tv and dvd player anyway so it really doesn't matter. Which tv looks the best? I was thinking about a normal screen but will go with a flat one if you can tell me why it is better. Maybe I'll stop in later and play around with them. I need one with a stand that matches my audio components. Actually I may just go with a HT in a box or better yet, do they make a DVD with built in suround speakers? My Mexican friend is wondering too so maybe I'll just have him give you a call because I find it a little hard to understand him.

:D :D :D

Paul,

I have seen you lurking at quite a number of boards. How's the rig shaping up? Any new gear?

Im usually a tad *too* honest about reliability issue's. A good number of people have to re-think their entire approach to entertainment, be it audio or television.

Danger,

If we were on comission, I would agree. Those people got butt-loads of money :)

MadMax,

Yes, in fact there is a company that builds the component you seek. It's a place called "Boutique Audio", located in North-West Wyoming near the Grand Teton range. Their products are only made per order, and are available for local pick-up only! They have a sale going this month, and if you hurry, you can have it made for less then $200 bucks.

As for the televisions. Truth be told, I am blind. I was hired because of possible descrimination suit's I could file against the company. And no, its not funny to point to a screen thats on the opposite side of the store while I am looking at you trying to give you sound advise.

And will your friend wash my car? I dont drive, but I hear they are pretty good at it.., and if it gives him employment....well I dont see why not.

How about the moron salesman that told me a progressive scan DVD player wouldn't make a difference on a HDTV?

Needless to say that they are out of business now... :D

Ah yes, hopefully that salesmen was being an ass...and not being serious...

I've been there. I remember getting a call one day, asking if we sold music cd's.... I calmy and politely responded: "No, but we do carry appliances"....

at least you get a discount on equipment right?? :)

dealing with stupid people is a major PITA but in my opinion, that's part of the job of being a "salesman", so its hard to feel sorry for you.

if it weren't for all these stupid people who don't know what they need or want to buy, we wouldn't even NEED salesmen and you'd be out of a job. all you would need is a warehouse and a bunch of cash registers. so in a way, you should be thankful that all these idiots are giving you a way to make some money.

Phantom,

I would like to respond to this in detail, with emphatic viewpoints and belief's... but I do not wish to turn this "vent" post into something it was never meant to be...

Assuming the "discount" statement was to imply that its better than nothing... unfortunately, that is close to what it is worth. It is also a slap in the face to have a perk taken away with no reason being given.

Dealing with idiots is a part of life. Lets face it, we are all idiots about something, most of us are idiots about a lot. I am too well aware of how joe dumbass plays a part in giving us jobs. None of us are the exception here.. :)

On a personal note: This is bullshit play money, nothing more. Nothing to gain here except more toys. :)

its hard to read tone of voice in what somewhat writes, but it seems like you took offense to my post. i'm sorry if you did, that's not what i intended. i was merely trying to show a different point of view, not belittle you in any way.

Phantom,

haha No offense taken whatsoever bud! I tend to work myself into a strange mood at Club Polk - can't quite explain it. The nature of my post inheriently would welcome such responses, which was to be expected.

Yep, it can be difficult to interpret tone, especially when the author fails to convey it clearly. :)

Venting mode off: Now back to finding new gear..

ATC. you forget one thing regarding HTIB and CC... The onkyo 5.1 speaker and reciever package. the speakers arn't bad (not the greatest either but they sound alright to me, at least till i have the cash for LSi's) and you get a solid onkyo reciever. if you're looking for a simple fairly inexpensive setup that has headroom for expansion it's a pretty good deal. I know i'm happy with the sound quality from it :D

MTX,

That system has the XM radio hooked up to it in our store... and is thusly constantly playing. I must say, its not bad for the asking price, and is generally the first system I point people towards.... and work down from there.

Occasionally I can work them UP, but thats a rarity :)

had a guy once who came in, got the onkyo, got home, realized that his wife owned his balls, and had to go back and get one of the sony systems, not the dream system but the second one down the line from the top... poor bastard
