Circuit City, took my horribly recorded Rush - Signals cd in to goof around. Those RT7's sitting on the high shelf. May very well have been the first time I HEARD a difference, or maybe the first time I really listened.
I know guys like Fabio, I mean Micah spent most of their younger days with the womens underwear section of the Sears catalog, but man, staring at the Polks in the Crutchfield catalog, looking at the dual ports, intrigued by the whole 'passive radiator' thing...
At that point I had my Fisher all-in-one Dual Cassette, am/fm, turntable, 5 band EQ with moving LED's, and kept thinking...one day man, one day.

Lessee....
In college, a kid down the hall had a pair of SDA's but I didn't know anything about them and didn't know him all that well....
another friend has a pair of Monitor 7c's but doesn't listen to them much..
I consider that pretty much stink finger.
Where I really lost it was when a buddy of mine bought a new house and set up his HT with a pair of RT7's (that I currently own)/CS350LS/M5's in the rear and a PSW150.....
that is what did it for me

I guess I fell in love with Polk Speakers in college.
A guy down the hall had a set of Monitor 10's on them
funky angled stands running from some sort of seperate amp.
In a tiney dorm room, my god, the sound was incredible.
Thenk, I went to a Frat party (Rush) and heard a set of
small Monitor 4 or 5jr's (don't remember which) being
cranked at ear-splitting levels. Again, WOW.
I followed this up by seeing/hearing a set of 1.2's that were
damn near taller than me.
As far as losing your virginity with Polk... I am glad
I listened to Polk in the days before they went to
ported speaker designs.

looking around at HiFi Buys Outlet Store looking for something I can afford, see a pair of good size speakers, hell at price I can afford, tell the guy there, hook them up Sambo let's see what they sound like , hmmm pretty damn good, ask Sambo, what are these?? These are a close model from Polk Audio it the Monitor 10, Sambo ring them up they are going with me.
But years before, I was at the mall with my mom, Jesus that was a long time ago, anyway I wonfer in the the shop with all the cool stereo stuff, and there is a guy sitting in a chair with a grin on his face and the salesman and he are both like little kids going on and on about the soundfield, and such shit I didn't know about or care about, it was a pair of SDA CRS speakers on the matching stands.

I went to Soundscape here in Baltimore back in March of '87. Soon after that, I went back for the Monitor 10B's. I took them home, listened in the dark and then we cuddled together. Heck, I even felt respected in the morning!
I've turned into a Ho Bag now. I'm doing a pair of SDA-SRS 2.3's, a pair of FX500's and a CS400 all at the same time!
Go ahead, call me slut!

Let's see...
I was 17, in my truck. It was an incredible weekend. I'll never forget it...
I spent all weekend in stalling the old Polk Mobile Monitor MM3055 component system. Put the mids in the factory location and the tweeters in the top of the door panel. Installed a Kenwood amp and wallah! Still have the truck and stereo, but now it's suplemented by a Kicker XPL 10" sub and some gen1 EX 4x6's in the rear.

It was the summer of 89. I was at the house of a friend of a girl that I was dating. I had been to the house several times but had never stayed very long. That evening, we sat around the pool talking for hours. The subject turned to music and within minutes we were in the girl's bedroom sitting on the bed listening to her CD collection. We had been listening for a while when I commented on how good her "stereo" sounded. It was just a small system, obviously quality components, but I had no idea what the brands were. That my friends is the point at which the sky parted and the heavens were opened unto me. She said "If you think this sounds nice, you should hear my dad's system". Almost as if she knew what I was thinking she said "come on, I'll show you". With that she grabbed a handful of discs, and down the hallway we went. When we reached the room where the system was located, there was a strange tingle in the air,,,,, and then, the door opened. I stepped into the room, and to my left were the biggest speakers that I had ever seen. The Polk Audio SRS 1.2's. I stared for the longest time, jaw in my lap, I must have looked like the biggest dork on the planet. She walked over to the wall and opened up a little door. Inside was the biggest mess of crap that I had ever seen. All of the equiptment was just sitting there, kind of happhazardly tossed on the shelves. I don't know what all of the component brands were, but the ones that I remember were a Mod Squad Pre-Amp with only an input selector and attenuator, a Nakamichi STASIS Amp and a sony CD player. There was a turntable on the bottom shelf about waist high, but I don't know who made it. The turntable seemed weird to me because the belt was on the outside of the platter and the platter was concave with a nut of some sort to hold the LP on the platter. Anyway, the moment had come, I was about to lose my cherry. She turned on the amp. then the CD player, I don't remember her turning on the Pre. Slowly the tray on the player opened and in went the disc. The disk by the way was the Psychedelic Furs, Talk Talk Talk. At the time this was one of our favorite disks. The play button was pushed and that's when it happened, I almost fainted, straight away. It was the most incredible sensation that I have ever experienced with an audio system, and one that I have never duplicated. That one night changed my life. The girl that I was dating, well, it didn't last. Relationships rarely do at that age. But one love remains true, My love/obsession with Matthew's speakers has only grown. It took me almost Four years to save the money to afford my first Polks, Blond LS-50's. I still own them and I still listen to them almost everyday. In recent years I finally completed my dream of having a Polk home theater with a CS400 and a pair of RT35i's, it is to my humble taste an amazing sounding system. Well, thanks for reading my way to long post, I didn't know how to write it any shorter.

I was stationed in Korea back in 88-89. I hooked-up on a hell of a deal on some 10Bs. The first time I heard them was back in the barracks. I "loved them long-time" ever since.

Great post, Jeff (Biggs). I remember that feeling, too, of first hearing a system that "worked."
For me, it started at a local stereo store when I was in elementary school.. My dad bought some h/k separates, along with some Boston's, and I thought "it can't get any better than this..."
Until I was a bit older and we happened upon a true hifi shop when shopping for his first home theatre in '92. My dad let me loose with a $12K budget (for everything but TV as he had just bought a RPTV) and told me to build a dream system...
That's where I fell in love with B&W's speakers, specifically the 805's. I can remember just putting in CD after CD just to hear what I had been missing.. I didn't know reproduced music could move you so much (I was a big fan of live shows). It is a life changing experience, for sure.
As for my "Polk cherry" I just bought a set of RT25i's to drop into my office.. :D

First for me was in Circuit City during college when I worked there all those years ago. The Bose sales rep. was in talking up his system and did a demo against some RT55i's. The difference was very noticeable and I was impressed that a pair of speakers could sound so much better than a complete Bose setup. At the time I was new to the home audio game but needed a hobby. I saved my sheckles and when I terminated employment at the store I purchased the RT55i's, and the CS400i very inexpensively. I also purchased at that time a Velodyne 12" powered sub so all that was missing was some quality rears. Hey it has been awhile but very worth the wait. Not sure why I didn't purchase the 35i's back then but sure am glad I have them now.:)

A few yrs ago, on a holiday visit to parents, found out Dad had bought a pair of 5jr's. Impressed (then & now) w/how good those tiny things sound. Also impressed w/the entry-level HK stereo receiver he bought back when it was understood that even entry-level receivers should be able to handle at least one pair of 4 ohm spkrs.

I think that I am a lot older than some of you (but not too old to remember!) - April 1977 at Soundscape (The one in Downtown Baltimore - next to the Trailways Bus Station on Fayette Street)
I had been listening to Polk 10Bs for a full six months. (after work and on Satudays) I saved my Income Tax Checks for 2 years before I finally had enough money ($530 plus tax and an addition 40 Bucks for the Stands) to get them! Have not regretted the purchase in 25 (and still going) Years. Funny how some people cannot remember their first Kiss, but can recall every detail about their first Stereo. (what we old guys call it)

Man, Forgot the Music - I was a into JIMI and The Parliament-Funkadelic/Bootsy Collins/Isley Brothers thang back then. (and still am) I would play "Smash Hits" / "Mothership Connection"/"3+3" back to back to back, and would always finish of the evening (or morning - didn't know sometime - there was always a "Purple Haze" in the room) with "Pali Gap" from the "Rainbow Bridge" Album (yea, I said Album!)

I lost mine at an AudioCraft store in Westlake, OH back in '86 or '87 I believe. AudioCraft is one of those 'audio boutiques' in a well-to-do city and I was definitely NOT well-to-do (read: POOR). I was helping one of my friends put together a relatively cheap system and heard that AudioCraft sold used high quality equipment. I figured we would walk in the door and get the 'you don't belong in here' look and be unceremoniously ushered out of the store. Instead, we were met with a sonic blast of Iron Maiden's Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son coming from a pair of 1.2's. It was INCREDIBLY loud but INCREDIBLY clear. Standing in front (rather bravely I might add) was a VERY long haired salesman playing air guitar (hey....it was the 80's.....I felt right at home :)). We stood there for a moment enjoying the music and watching this guy look a bit stupid. When Seventh Son ended, he turned around and nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw us. He ended up letting us put in our discs (Back then I used Boston S/T CD simply because it ROCKED!) and cranking it to our hearts content. The 1.2's were being run by a PAIR of McIntosh amps (not sure which ones). I still haven't heard anything even approach that beautiful sound.
......well I'm still not a millionaire (eagerly awaiting the moment though :)) so I have to settle for the system I have (and love): A Kenwood 5.1 receiver (middle of the road), one pair 7C's (fronts), one pair 5jr+'s (rears), CS245i (center), and a PSW350 (I live in an apartment so the PSW650 was definitely out). It may be a humble system compared to a lot of others on this board but It sounds great to me. Vintage Polk just has that awesome 'sound' that can't be duplicated.

I'll keep it going! It was 87 I think, momma wanted a home stereo so we went into Audition Highfi (since long gone) and was just looking around like first time tourist's in NY City?(didn't know what the eff was going on) I think I saw some Bose and maybe JBL and heard a little about them so asked salesman to help us with them. After a while we asked him witch pair he thought we should consider and he said none of the ones we had asked to listen to?(thought he was an ass) We asked what he meant and he said he would recommend the Polk Audio?(never heard of them I said) So, he turned on the SDA-1C's and, well these things were incrediable! We went in the store looking to spend maybe $500(for a complete stereo) and asked him what the Polks cost and he said $1700.00 and, well I almost pooped may pants! That shot the $500 all to hell so we asked him to try again. He then played the Monitor 10B's and they sounded great and the $650 price tag was much better but we didn't have anything esle? But we were sold and had to have the 10's so after about another 2 hours we had our Polks and were about 2K in debt? Yes, we bought Yamaha equipment! :D

Around the beginning of 1989 I decided my stereo system, which will remain anonymous, wasn't cutting it anymore. A buddy of mine had just purchased a pair of Kilpsch KG4's which I had listened to and thought sounded alot better than what I had. I went to Spaceways Sound in College Park, MD (long gone) to really give the Kilpsch's a serious demo. They were driven by a Sony TA-N77ES amp and TA-E77ESD pre. It sounded damn good. Then I asked the guy what about those speakers and pointed to some Polk SDA 1B's. He switched them on and I remember thinking, this is what stereo is suppose to sound like, music everywhere. Clear, wide, deep and in the center with bass I could feel. I had a pile of cd's with me, but when I played Money For Nothing from Dire Straits/Brothers In Arms cd at concert level, well I had a religious experience. I left with the Polk's and the Sony equipment. I still have the Polk's and the Sony stuff, but I listen through some 2.3TL's now and I'm in the market for some mono blocks. Life is good!

Summer of '79, my buddy bought some Monitor 10B's from a local upscale audio house. The rest of us were heavily into the New Advent Loudspeaker at the time, and the 10B gave us something different to try. While the speakers were comparable in sound quality, the 10B ultimately sounded better as my ears developed.
Those Advents still sound good though, nearly 25 years later (with new woofer surrounds). They lack the detail and imaging of the newer Polks, and the bass is muddier (surprising given the acoustic suspension enclosure), but the octave to octave balance and the lack of coloration is still amazingly good and they generate treble energy in a very natural and effortless fashion.
Oh, and Micah: Summer of 1982 in my then girlfriend's bedroom - I'll never forget that moment as long as I live.

It was, I believe a CM-1090, but it was damaged in one of my many moves over the last few years. It was a great box and matched up real nice with my RTA8T's. When it got trashed thats when I steped into the Home Theater stuff with my H/K 520. Not a bad box but could be better.
