Here's some info on the CD/DVD-A (http://www.audiorevolution.com/news/0204/04.dualdisc.html) dual disc. The part that SUCKS is "For example, because of the bonding process, the CD layer of the dual disc can now supposedly play only 60 minutes of content, as opposed to 74 minutes on a traditional red book CD." New format with less songs or songs edited to fit. DVD-A guys what are you thinking??!!

I'd be interested. Most CDs seem to have around 45-60 minutes on them. There's rarely 74 minutes of music on a CD let alone good music. This could save me from having to buy a CD and DVD-A of the same title.

The Fleetwood Mac DVD-A Rumours has a track for the tune Silver Springs that was dropped from the original album due to lack of space. Reported that Stevie Nicks was very pleased to see it go back on the DVD-A
Sometimes you get more not less.:D
I would say that as time goes on I am listening to sacd/dvd-a less and doing more 2ch listening. The SACD usually contain a stereo track and some dvd-a also these discs are nice since they can play either way.

All SACDs have a stereo track, that's part of the spec. The confusion is when there is hybrid/MCH (SACD stereo, SACD MCH and redbook CD) or hybrid/SACD (SACD stereo and redbook CD) or MCH SACD (SACD stereo and SACD MCH) or single layer (SACD stereo only). I always check the SACD sticky label and the back of the case for clarification. Reminds me of Dolby Digital 5.1, 4.0 and mono confusion.

One problem is most DVD-A's are multi-channel only and audiophiles for the most part are 2 channel people, hence the popularity of SACD. Reference quality SACD players are everywhere while there are not even a hand full of reference DVD-A players. There are thousands of SACD releases while there are maybe 800 DVD-A's. Hybrid SACD's do not short change you on the remastered CD layer, offer a 2 channel and multi-channel SACD layer. DVD-A has been playing catch up to SACD, too little, too late. That's why I said that dog ain't gonna hunt.

I only own three DVD-A's, but all three have a high resolution stereo track. Are these exceptions to the rule? Also, and I'm sure you don't want to hear this, but the 5.1 mixes can also be VERY enjoyable. Oh, and the extra material viewable via your monitor isn't to be taken too lightly either, nice extras.

L&C,
With all due respect, I am glad you enjoy DVD-A and I wasn't putting the format down, just expressing my opinion and the facts as I understand them. Personally, I wish the record companies would re-issue everything in SACD, DVD-A and forget about CD's all together unless it's JVC XRCD's or MFSL gold CD's, those are excellent too.
Side note: I've watched a few DVD concert shows and personally find that watching the TV while listening to the music takes away from the music. I tend to close my eyes when listening, be it my stereo or at a live show as it let's me bathe in the sound better.

F1,
I know you're a 2 channel guy but have you ever heard the
dvd-audio 5:1 mixes of Steely Dan's Two against nature or Everything must go? IMO the 5:1 mix of these albums are incredible. I love the way Steely Dan and Elliott Scheiner mix in surround. The Nightfly by Donald Fagen is another great dvd-audio. I wonder why Steely Dan has chosen dvd audio over
SACD?

Gaucho is on SACD in multi-channel. It's great too.

Mike,
No, I admit that I haven't listened to those recordings. I have listened to some 5.1 recordings, just not my cup of tea, but I'm glad you're enjoying them. The format choice is largely chosen by the record company, not the artists. Universal was strickly in the DVD-A camp to begin with, but have started releasing SACD's now. Go figure!?!
