Progressive Scan: what do you know?

Let's get into it:

Can someone give me a good layman's explanation of "progressive scan"? Do I need a progressive scan TV to use a progressive scan DVD player? What's the diff between a progressive scan DVD player and a "line doubler"?

Ahh, extra buttons!!
Regular tv w/ regular dvd is lines 1,3,5,7,9, etc. then 2,4,6,8,10, etc. then goes back to 1,3, you get the point. there are sixty frames in one second. :D

Progressive scan tv a.k.a. hdtv ready tv's with a progressive scan dvd will do all lines for all frames. if you don't have either the right dvd or the right tv this will not happen.

HOWEVER, there are some hdtv ready tv's that use line doublers that will take your 1,3,5,7, etc picture and do 1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7,9,9, one frame and 2,2,4,4,6,6,8,8,10,10, the next. It's a blockier picture and circles or curved lines turn out the wierdest.

3:2 pulldown:

also, if your familiar with movie film, they record/playback at 24 prames per second. so the dvd player uses the same frame over and over. EX:

movie frame: 1,2,3,4,5,6

tv frame: 1,1,1,2,2,3,3,3,4,4,5,5,5,6,6

this causes some problems with fast movments. Progressive scan with a progressive tv is supposed to eliminate these problems
