Jackson Browne - Hold Out

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000002GX2.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Originally recorded in 1980 it it has some audio clues of the times. "Disco Apocalypse" is a prime example using the distinctive four/four bass drum beat that was the core of most disco music. "That Girl Could Sing", "Call It A Loan" and "Hold On Hold Out" are really nice cuts. I like all of Jackson Browne's first 7 albums alot and this one falls squarely in that category. When I bought a new car in 1980 that had my first cassette player this was one of the 2 cassettes I bought that first day.

Now for the downside. This CD was released in 1990 and is one of the most compressed CDs I have encountered recently. It literally sounds like a blanket has been thrown over the speakers. It is far from unlistenable and it appears to be a well recorded CD but the digital mastering leaves much to be desired. There is a Japanese remaster that came out a couple of years ago or I may see if I can find a LP. I really like the album but the CD could be better.

A decent engineering job, much, much better than Goats Head Soup. . .

The Rolling Stones; "Emotional Rescue"; LP Rolling Stones Records COC 16015

Great mix job.

One thing I've noticed about Stones LPs is that although the soundstage doesn't go out much past the speaker side (only on a song or two), the imaging between the speakers is crisp and pinpoint.

Prince - 1999 LP

I'm not a big Prince fan, but respect him for being fresh, and original. One thing that continues to amaze me is that I can listen to his early 80's albums like 1999 or Purple Rain and forget that I'm listening to 80's music. It still has a modern sound after 20 plus years. Good stuff!

David Bowie - Best of Bowie

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00006JYI7.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

I was actually looking for the SACD of "The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars" and found this CD. I realized that I have very little Bowie in my collection and while I really didn't want to buy the entire catalog (I'm not that big of a Bowie fan) this would be a pretty good alternative. It contains most of his "hits" and notable tracks. If you don't mind that a few are the "radio" cuts rather than the album cuts, this is a quite comprehensive 2 disc compilation of Bowie's work. Probably not enough for the serious Bowie fan (but they probably have all the albums anyway) but good enough for me. SQ and remastering are pretty good as well. (I still haven't gotten the Ziggy SACD yet, but it is on the list to buy). Here is the track list.

Disc 1
1. Space Oddity
2. The Man Who Sold The World
3. Changes
4. Life On Mars?
5. Moonage Daydream
6. Suffragette City
7. Ziggy Stardust
8. All The Young Dudes
9, The Jean Genie
10. Panic In Detroit
11. Rebel, Rebel
12. Diamond Dogs
13. Young Americans
14. Fame
15. Golden Years
16. TVC15
17. Sound and Vision
18. Heroes
19. D.J.

Disc 2
1.Ashes To Ashes
2. Fashion
3. Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)
4. Under Pressure
5. Cat People (Putting Out Fire)
6. Let's Dance
7. China Girl
8. Modern Love
9. Blue Jean
10. This is Not America
11. Dancing In The Streets
12. Absolute Beginners
13. Time Will Crawl
14. Under The God
15. Jump They Say
16. The Heart's Filthy Lesson
17. I'm Afraid Of Americans
18. Thursday's Child
19. Slow Burn

Combination of Bhatt on the Sitar and Bela on Banjo, Chen plays a erh-hu (think of the background music to something like Crouching Tiger). Very light stuff, perfect for blocking everything else out here at work. Fantastically recoreded! Gotta love that they devote an entire page of the liner notes to the recording and mastering equipment. This is my first experience with Water Lily Acoustics but I don't think it will be my last.

I can't really say rare....I can't really say what the hell it is....Its an unreleased copy of David Gilmore performing "Money" live. I have a VERY close friend that does video production and was able to get a copy of this from him. Its a video with excellent sound that was done for MTV that was never released for air. I'm not really sure if it goes further than a few people? I do know it sounds great and the video is awesome. It's in mpeg format but the original is still in my friends hands and is being re-mastered for me as I write. Forgot I had this until last night. I'll be more than happy to share if anyone is interested. But the mastered copy to be reworked my take a while.

I can't really call myself a Madonna fan, or even a Pop music fan for that matter, but on rare occasions when I've found myself to be in a goofy mood I would throw in this disc. I always thought it sounded pretty good.... But then one day my wife (BTW: She's a Madonna fan) and I were in the local music store and stumbled across this album on new vinyl. I somewhat jokingly pointed it out to my wife. That was when she informed me that I was buying it. I wasn't thrilled at the idea of spending money on a Madonna album that we already had on CD, but figured, what the heck, it's not often the Mrs. picks out vinyl. When we got home she was pretty anxious to listen to it, and since I'm a fan of keeping the wife happy, that's just what we did. So I cued it up and sat down with her. Within the first few seconds of the first song she was groovin', and I was sitting there with my jaw on the floor. This album sounds amazing on vinyl! The vocals are much less shrill. Imaging is much more focused, and for some reason reaches way beyond the edge of the speakers. In fact the echo effect that is used in the song Vogue would make you swear you're hearing side surround speakers. For anyone who has a TT, a few extra dollars, and doesn't mind some classic Pop now and then, I would definitely recommend picking this up.

I like rock (old and new) the most, but played piano for 15+ years so also appreciate good classical, jazz and lots of other genres.

The Floyd disc is not my picture, but exactly what I was listening to. A friend of mine bought that From Underground to the Moon set many years ago. It came in this odd but pretty silk box, and was from Japan and not Italy (iirc...) I burned copies of his discs, so I now have my own set of this AWESOME 3 disc collection.

Msalla: Animals, Meddle, and Piper at the Gates= my 3 favorite Floyd albums :) And Animals was the album that sparked my fiance and I to start dating (long story), so it is extra special ;)

Tori Amos - To Venus and Back

http://cover6.cduniverse.com/MuzeAudioArt/330/333606.jpg

Just in that kind of mood tonight. She can be quirky and off the wall, especially with her lyrics. The compositions are very good and I'm mostly listening to disc #2 which is the live disc.

Everyone needs a little Tori is their lives now and again ;)

Rolling Stone (10/14/99, p.124) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...testifies to just how wide and deep her river runs....[it] is Amos at her most surreal, dreaming of her past, her pain and her desires in supersaturated musical and lyrical color..." Entertainment Weekly (9/24/99, p.145) - "...this disc is more 'Tori in an Ambient Mood'....it's the most enjoyable listen she's generated in years..." - Rating: B Q (11/99, p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...her most involving album to date....she only emerges as even more singular a talent, practically unique....The songs of Tori Amos are nothing if not brave." Mojo (11/99, p.97) - "...This fine, complex record finds [Amos] a little calmer, but no less challenging or controversial. She's threaded a few more beads, several of them gems." CMJ (10/18/99, p.32) - "...The studio album contains some of Amos' most introspective songs to date....The live bonus album showcases her more rocking and raw side with hard-hitting renditions of her hits....VENUS should appease anyone looking to scratch that Amos itch."

I have it and I had to restore it. The cover is ruined so I just purchased another from GG. Got it today. I need to see if it is in better shape than the LP I have, not that it is in bad shape, it is a bit worn. I have ELO's CD box set and although it is really great, it doesn't have that vinyl warmth.

It is very well done and when listening to Roy Wood drag that big bow across those thick double bass strings it presented such a growl that it brought back memories of my mom playing her bass while my dad played the piano in the music room when I was a young lad in Yeadon, PA. That sound is so distictive that it's burned into my memory and when I hear it I get goose bumps.

The music on this LP I would call progressive impressionistic music. The instruments played on this presentation are as follows; cello, oboe, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, string bass (growl), basson (its own growl), clarinet, recorders, slide guitar, piano, electric guitar, French horn, hunting horn, violin, tympani, percussion and drums. It's not ELO's best, far from it, but it definitely has what it takes to keep me listening.

The Electric Light Orchestra; "Ole ELO," LP United Artists UA-LA630-G

It's a best of and it sure is. This LP was severely damaged, the mold had eaten into the vinyl like cancer but I was able to restore it enough to make it listenable.

Just for ****s and giggles I A/B'd "Ma Ma Ma Belle," and "Strange Magic" against the remastered Flashback CD compilation. It may not be a fair comparison because I didn't compare it to the Ole ELO CD.

Anyhoo, even with the ticks and pops and surface noise there was no comparison. The LP sounded so much more natural. The soundstage was wider and there was more air between instruments. There is what I think is a Jews Harp or similar instrument in Strange Magic, and it sounded so nice on the LP but on the CD it was annoying. Doing the direct comparison I had to lower the volume on the CD quite a bit but it still didn't take that digital edge off, even with the Parasound sweetening up the highs compared to the LP, I would not have been able continue listening to the CD for a longer period of time. One more thing, the CD presented a flatter image that is, two dimensional compared to the LP's more holographic image.

BTW did I mention that I really love this LP?

I've loved Richard Wagner's work since I was a freshman in high school. This is the single greatest recording I've ever heard of these musical pieces. The dynamics are breathtakingly, startling, and enthralling. I've played this copy quite a bit so there is a little bit of crackle throughout the record but nothing serious. Gov't Mule- The Deepest End

Great jam band, dozens and dozens of guests on this 2 cd 1 dvd set. Over 6 hours of live music and video. Great stuff........simply great music.

http://cover6.cduniverse.com/MuzeAudioArt/Large/60/499160.jpg

This release includes a bonus DVD. Gov't Mule: Warren Hayes (vocals, guitar); Matt Abts (drums); Danny Louis (keyboards). Additional personnel includes: Jack Casady, Les Claypool, Karl Denson, Dirty Dozen Brass Band Horns, Bela Fleck, Roger Glover, Mike Gordon, David Hildago, Paul Jackson, Sonny Landreth, Conrad Lazano, Will Lee, Jason Newsted. Recorded live at The Saenger Theatre, New Orleans, Louisiana, May 3, 2003. When Gov't Mule bassist Allen Woody passed away, bandmates Warren Haynes and Matt Abts chose to go forward to keep the memory of their friend alive. Rather than initially replacing Woody outright, they instead invited a number of famous bass players who were both friends and influences on their friends to play on a two-part project called THE DEEP END. After touring and having these numerous guests pop up to periodically play with the Mule on the road, ATO Records got smart and recorded the May 3rd, 2003 show at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans for a package called (not surprisingly), THE DEEPEST END: LIVE IN CONCERT. Joined by plenty of surprise guests, including Les Claypool, Karl Denson, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Bela Fleck, the Mule runs through two discs worth of tunes that include the jazz-flavored "Sco-Mule," chugging rocker "Bad Little Doggie" and the Dead-flavored Haynes/Robert Hunter collaboration "Lay of the Sunflower." Most touching is the heartfelt "Soulshine," with Haynes' gritty vocals raising plenty of goose bumps on this wholly appropriate set-ending song. For those unable to attend any of these shows, there is a bonus DVD included to give listeners a look at this special concert experience.

Rolling Stones; "Let It Bleed," abkco 9 004-1 180gm LP

I played this version for the first time tonight and while I was listening to it I kept thinking that it sounded like an SACD. That analog airyness & depth of detail was missing but the heavy information that is SACD was there. I kept listening and I was sure that this was an analog master transfered to a digital format. Upon reading the record sleeve info it turns out I was right. It was done in DSD/Direct SBM.

Don't get me wrong it sounded very very good and I enjoyed this, one of the best, if not the best, Stones album there is.

I do however wish I had a good analog copy of this LP. I know the one I have is beyond listenable and when I purchased this I just thought it was an analog remaster pressed onto high performance vinyl.

Great music, great performance . . .

Jewel - Pieces of You

For some reason this particular release (her first) took a long time to take off. It was almost a full year before you could hear songs from this release in full rotation on the FM dial. So much so that I got into Jewel a bit later because they wore the 3 or 4 songs out on the radio. This is a bit uneven in spots as some of it was culled from live Coffee Shop recordings. At one point when Who Will Save Your Soul became very popular Jewel re-recorded the single.

The stand outs are the songs that were in heavy rotation

Who Will Save Your Soul
Foolish Games
You Were Meant For Me

It's very easy to tell she was a special talent. She had spent most of her childhood performing songs with her family and then eventually she was discovered in a Coffee Shop in San Diego called the InnerChange Cafe which now sadly no longer exists. There she was discovered or rather approached by Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the rest as they say is history.

Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk

Continuing with the females

http://cover6.cduniverse.com/MuzeAudioArt/460/468542.jpg

The most instantly engaging, least cryptic (though still sometimes inscrutable) Tori Amos record since LITTLE EARTHQUAKES, SCARLET'S WALK is a welcome return to form. Ostensibly a grand concept album based on an American travelogue, the disc is, at its core, simply a collection of detailed relationship songs in the vein of early Joni Mitchell. The instrumentation is sparer than on Amos's last several efforts, effectively showcasing her supple piano work and uncharacteristically unmannered vocal performances. Many tracks feature nothing but bass, drums, piano and atmospheric guitar (courtesy of ex-Pretender Robbie McIntosh and avant garde jazzer David Torn) and this instrumentation gives the record an appropriately open, organic feel. Though there are, as usual, many moments of confrontational, biting humor here, SCARLET'S WALK reveals a somewhat kinder, gentler Tori Amos. Even "I Can't See New York," which appears to have been inspired by the September 11th attacks, seems more empathetic than angry, and is filled with wistful introspection. Though it lacks anything resembling a hit single, SCARLET'S WALK is a mature and fully realized work, easily ranking among Tori Amos's very best albums.

MFSL UHQR: Earl Klugh; "Finger Paintings" LP MFQR 1-025

By far one of the best recordings I have. This is one of Dave Grusin's greatest production, arrangement, direction, and player. The sonics are five star and Earl Klugh plucks those string with the precision of a surgeon. It is so dynamic and real that it just mellows you out one minute then takes your breath away the next.

The strings are so precise. The bass sounds are thumpgrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! If you don't have it, get it, even the regular LP is something to hear, I would imagine as much for the CD too. I listened twice tonight. Everything, each and every instrument was precisely placed in the image and sounded like I was in the room with them.

Great Stuff!!!

I had all eight of the UHQRs that they made but when my condo was burgularized in 1997 they were stolen. These thieves knew their stuff and what they wanted. I lucked out and had the two remaining in a different lot of crates so these are all I have left of the UHQR lot. The three that were the best of the lot I would say are Supertramp’s Crime Of The Century [MFQR 005], Alan Parson’s I, Robot [MFQR 084] and Cat Stevens’ Tea for the Tillerman [MFQR 035] but this Earl Klugh is right up there with then. I miss some of the really good stuff I had that was either stolen, destroyed by water damage or I just well . . . enough whining. I still have some great stuff.

I was in the mood for something a little softer this afternoon.. a few weeks ago I pick up a handful of albums for a buck a piece. All but one was in way above average condition. :D

today I cleaned and placed on the platter along with Joe's The Clamp and starting spinning Brenda Russell - Get Here (A&M records, SP5178)

Exec produced in 1988 by Brenda Russell herself... the album is quite good. Way better than I thought. Sure a few of the songs are dated, but a couple of them really stand out. One in particular is Get Here. Wow, she has a great smooth voice.

I had heard the remake of Get Here from about 1990 by Oleta Adams. and really liked her rendition of the song. But when the last song came on by Brenda who actually wrote the song Get Here, well it was tons better. The album is well recorded and has great clean dynamics. *We are talking vinyl, not CD here. ;)

Anyhoo, it's good.. and for a buck, well you can't really go wrong. I don't know if Russell still puts out music, but this album certainly must have been a highlight in her career.

Yes, and yes that is. The title is, of course, borrowed from a Freddie King standard on (IIRC) "Getting Ready".

If you're a Mayall fan, you probably know Freddie is one of John's all-time favorite bluesmen. Every guitar player that stood with the Bluesbreakers over the years had to cover at least one of Freddie's songs to make the cut. The album is about 80% covers. Robben Ford does a guest cut with his own tribute tune "Cannonball Shuffle", which is spectacular.

Thought I crack this one open and start on the Sinatra quest. These first two LPs, squeezed onto one LP, the engineer brought Frank to the forefront and then sqeezed the orchestra into a four foot section behind him. His voice is great and focused but the orchestra behind him is all bunched together. Despite that the music is great.

Pretty good LP. ZB turned me onto The Arcade Fire, "Neon Bible" but that doesn't get released until tomorrow, so I ordered Neon Bible, which btw got "Recording of the Issue" in the April/May TAS, and "Funeral."

I can't say that it gave me goose bumps or had my toes tapping or even had me breathing heavily or breathless, it just delivered a nice amount of music.

I warn you however, it is a little compressed and the engineering could have been better. I think this record is worth $15 and another listen.

Listening to my favorite undiscovered female artist.

Charlotte Martin, much like a saner version of Tori Amos. Here's a link to artist approved live recordings. I've dl'd many of her shows and it's amazing what great sounding amatuer recordings there are out there. There is something magical about a raw untouched live recording. The dynamics, ambience, lip smacking sounds, crowd interaction. I've heard her 3 studio recordings and I enjoy the small venue live recordings so much better. You can tell a lot about how good an artisit is by their live performances. Complete with warts and all. Great performers always sound so good and she is no exception.

Zombie Boy turned me onto to this. . . very, very intense and well done LP. This is the first time I ever saw a 1 1/2 LP set. The last side has no music on it, just neon bibles etched into it. This is a new release and has pressing issues but the music is as great as it was back in 1969. As a matter of fact I had a spiritual experience with "Golden Slumbers," "Carry that Weight," & "The End." they had me breathless.

The pressing issues are a real problem. This is the second copy I've received and although it is better than the one I returned it still has issues that need to be addressed by the reseller.

If you like female vocalists, you've got to check her out. Most of the stuff I've heard would be classified in the genre of Americana/country. Not quite as sing songy (if that makes sense at all) as Joni Mitchell. Her voice just makes me feel warm inside. I grabbed a bunch of her older stuff on vinyl the other day. I'll update as I have time to listen.

"All the Roadrunning", which Halo referred to above, is a newer release with Mark Knopfler. They make a great combination. There's a studio and a live CD, also a live DVD. Haven't seen anything on a vinyl version, though.:(

"All the Roadrunning", which Halo referred to above, is a newer release with Mark Knopfler. They make a great combination. There's a studio and a live CD, also a live DVD. Haven't seen anything on a vinyl version, though.:(

I thank you again Bro!

Emmylou Harris - Quarter Moon In A 10 Cent Town
& Elite Hotel

Just got done listening to "Quarter Moon...", got me right back on the Emmylou bandwagon. "Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight" is such a well written song, I always seem to enjoy it no matter who's doing it. The only album of hers I have left that's new to me is "The Ballad of Sally Rose", which, going by the album cover alone, I'm in a real hurry to get to.

Great Snags man. . . Tea for the Tillerman is a very special recording and you got it in MFSL.

Question: are you having any trouble with the Abbey Road reissue? So far I've received two different copies from Elusive Disc and both have issues on side two with left channel distortion. The vinyl is pretty crappy too in that there is more surface noise and crackles than usual.

No, not on the copy i have no noticeable distortion on side two but not as quiet as the import White album.

Roy Buchanan - When A Guitar Plays The Blues
1985, Alligator Records

Reprise of my very favorite of Roy's studio sessions. This version is a mix to CD from original virgin vinyl I did a few years back. Played through the Innersound Isis hybrid ESL's, it is jaw dropping for its detail, transparency and dynamics.

Albert Cummings - True To Yourself
2004, Blind Pig BPCD5092, CD

Albert's lead solos are actually an anticlimax to his backing rhythm guitar work -- which is a thing of unique style, pace and construction -- for his own vocals. More enjoyable with each new release, this Massachusetts home builder turned bluesman deserves your attention as a blues fan.

He often tours 3-piece because he can, and that pretty much says it all.

Now i'm going to have to get this album for myself. He got his in near mint condition for only a buck. ;)

Last night; Led Zepplin I & II

Tonight (and it ain't over yet); Led Zepplin III & IV

I can't seem to get enough. I'm going to listen to the whole box set now that my digital front end sounds decent.

Then I think Pink Floyd, " Shine On" will be next.

Why thank you. I've gotten some good advice recently ;)

I also listened to some of the MHS releases; I forget exactly which ones, but I wasn't very impressed with their quality. Grandad seemed to be a member as well, he also had a bunch from the Columbia, Phillips, and Nonesuch labels.

In my book, classical is Beatles, Pink Floyd, Who, Vanilla Fudge, Clash, MC5, etc. etc. That's what they should be teaching kids in school. To quote Bruce, "I learned more from a 3 minute record than I ever learned in school."

As with other labels MHS had some really great stuff and some real garbage and I mean garbage. Even the vinyl itself on the bad stuff was awful. As I said sometimes it's a crap shoot but when you come across that gem you really know it.

Listening to Toad the Wet Sprocket "Dulcinea" Excellent guitar work. Seems to be a pretty good recording. I have actually been listening to several of their cd's and I have forgotten how good they were. I did see them live last fall and I will say they sound even better live.

I have been looking for this since I heard it reviewed on The Record Shelf w/ Jim Svade (on NPR.) Amazon finally had it available from Rhinebeck Records.

Gareth Farr--Symphonic Works

Not the greatest recording technically. On tracks 1 & 2 (From the Depths Sound the Great Sea Gongs) the bulk of the orchestra sounds distant(?) while the precussion is really enjoyable. (And percussion is what Farr seems to do best.)

I think 'Queen of Demons' is my favorite track.

Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes - Live at the Greek

http://cover6.cduniverse.com/MuzeAudioArt/380/381963.jpg

A blistering live 2 cd set of mostly Zep tunes with a few blues standards thrown in. No Crowes songs because of contractual issues. This one of my favorite live rock cd's the sound is amazing and full.

This is superb SDA recording. This show used 3 guitarists and in the past it was always difficult to discern each guitar and who was playing what because the guitars seems to come from the same location.

The way the recording was made has Audley Freed in the left channel; Rich Robinson in the right channel; and Jimmy Page in the center (actually slightly off center to the right). On the SDA's both the L and R are way out off the sides and Jimmy is just right of Chris Robinson's vocals which are dead center.

This sounds so full on the SDA's, my buddy even mentioned that it sounded like I had a surround system on while we were listening. All the instruments are so fleshed out and you can hear every little nuance of the recording. The organ, toms, cymbals were all in the mix in different spots R/L and F/B. It really sounded like I was right in the middle of the concert.

If you like Zep get this cd. If you have SDA's and like Zep this is a must have. While this band could never replace Zep they do a damn fine job and Jimmy for the most part is on fire. I have a bootleg video of a show from this mini-tour and they take a no nonsense approach. It was easy to visualize the whole show while listening to this fantastic recording.
