Mike, I have this one enroute to my house. I can't believe I've never heard it before, maybe a song now and then on the radio back in the day but never the whole LP.

This man likes his job: writing, playing and singing New Orleans flavored blues.

We had a chance to see him live again a week ago at our favorite small venue and consider him one of the top 10 live acts ever for us.

My only knock of this album is the same for every one of his I've heard. It does not capture the marvelous power and dynamics of his very unique voice.

Martin Scorsese Presents: Jimi Hendrix

From Scorsese's "Blues" mini series. Has some good tracks on it, but it pales in comparison to the Hendrix "Blues" album. Sound quality is consistently good, however. For the Hendrix collector rather then someone just getting into him.

Edit:Last night, running out of interest during the third side, I looked at the fourth side and decided to call it an evening. Listened to side 4 today and was more impressed. Midnight Lightning, the last track of side 4, is Jimi on vocals and guitar with no accompaniment. Great stuff.

Early Jimi Hendrix- Baron lp 105

A live recording of Jimi playing with Curtis Knight in 1965 , recorded at George's Club 20 in Hackensack, NJ. Varying, but generally pretty bad, recording of some of the show stoppers he played when he was still a sideman. It's a shame the recordings especially bad on Driving South, I'm a Man, and ....Killing Floor, when he's really ripping it up.

She has one of the most beautiful voices. First side is slower, sadder ballads, well done and delicate. Second side picks up the pace, highlights of the album for me are on it; the sweetest version of the Lowell George song "Willin" you'll ever hear as well as a Hank Williams song called "I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love WIth You" with Emmy Lou Harris. It's a great recording, even the regular Capitol version I have. I'd love to hear the 220g version.

They did a wonderful job of recording this album. I am listening to it on my custom monitors. When I first started playing it when the dog barks I heard it coming from the right wall almost ninety degrees from me. The way they recorded this album is really cool. Its like they sent all the cancellation signals to the proper speakers to have an SDA/holography effect. Very nice. Very nice indeed.

Fantasy Blues Series Sampler - America
1972, Fantasy Records - FP-4, 2-LP

My good friend, George Grand, graciously bestowed this unopened LP on me during a recent visit. I can't thank him enough. But, the best thing he did was save this treasure in the first place. Although unopened, it had a torturous existence--partially submerged in water! I was able to clean the vinyl to pristine condition and, I hope, stop the mold and mildew activity on the cover. (see pics below)

This is a promotional double album and never intended for resale. It samples 11 artist's double album releases on Fantasy in the early 70's. The albums were "painstakingly remastered" and it shows. These are the crème de la crème of the releases and are simply stunning. A quote from the internal liner notes sums it up perfectly and is as valid today as the day it was written, 36 years ago: "The music to be heard here was not created to exploit fads or fleeting musical trends; as a result, it is as refreshing and vital today as the day it was recorded."

You done good, George!

George Grand
01-16-2008, 11:14 AM
Mikey,

Thanks. I didn't really save it for that long. I only found it a week or two before you came up, but when I saw the artists, I knew she was yours.

Creedence recorded on Fantasy, and those albums always sounded pretty good to me. But the real reason I thought it would sound good was I had a Fantasy album "Pieces of Dreams" by Stanley Turrentine. Back in the 70's this album had a lot of sentimentality attached to it for moi. As I got systems that were better and better I really began to appreciate the recording.

I knew when I bought it it was going to a good home!

Jimi Hendrix - Cherokee Mist- studio outtakes

Great quality alt. and unreleased versions of songs, partial songs and jams. Hendrix and his associates were genius's. Most of this stuff is so far ahead of it's time it's not funny. The fun with Hendrix's music beyond his commercial hits is just listening to endless jams. How they develop, meander and unfold is pure magic. This is true music without all the excess and pressure. Free flowing, from the soul.

Fantastic historical document. I had to laugh because BB King states at one point he's 42 years old and he can do what he wants. 1968 seems like a long time ago. It's hard to believe he's 82 today. This was when Jimi was playing on the "chittlin' circuit". He used to jam with a lot of people before he became "famous".

Danny what is it about the Japanese pressing that is special.

This CD has a couple of bonus remixes; bonus tracks are often added onto Japanese version when released over there. However, I was informed that the domestic US CD also featured the same tracks. So, in other words, there shouldn't be any difference between the Japanese and the US versions.

Led Zeppelin- Live in Central Park 7-21-69 bootleg

http://www.zeppelinart.com/main/1969/1969-07-21%20new%20york/complete%20central%20park%20(sanctuary)/7_21_69b.jpg

The band played many of the festivals in the USA that took place in 1969 (with the notable exception of a small gathering in Upstate New York in August 1969). The concert in New York's Central Park was a classic, with incredible paying by the band. However Robert Plant excelled himself with reaching some incredibly high notes at the end of You Shook Me, with Jimmy Page's guitar. The How Many More Times Medley was superb, with The Woody Woodpecker Song thrown in for good measure, and a rather sexually explicit Lemon Song.

Zeppelin played two shows that day for the Schaefer Music Festival and this tape documents the early show at 7pm. No tape has ever surfaced nor even hinted for the late show so this is all that exists from that day. The show opens with the double attack of "Train Kept A-Rollin'" followed immediately by "I Can't Quit You Babe" before a very nervous sounding Plant says, "we'd like to..it's getting a bit dark innit?"

What follows is a fourteen-minute version of "Dazed And Confused" sounding very similar to the June BBC recording. Plant adds his orgasmic moans before his non-sequiter interjections during ("I want you to talk to me") and after ("bamma lamma ding dong"). Afterwards Plant becomes apologetic by saying, "Let me tell you, we're really pleased we weren't playing here last week despite the fact that we wanted to play because it was so hot. So it seems we read the cards right because it said it's gonna be cool. It's cool. It's COOL. We got a new album coming about the second week in August but at the moment there's been a bit of a delay on it. And there's been a bit of a delay on us getting the numbers ready for stage because we're still doing the old ones. We'd like to do something that was..." A heckler interrupts Plant with "White Summer!" "In a bit. It was written by Willie Dixon. It's a thing we in England heard on and EP called Muddy Waters Twist. I don't know what that means really but this is called 'You Shook Me'". What follows is a slow, heavy version of the blues piece with Plant struggling to reach the high notes by the end. There is another heckler at the end to which the audience laughs, but what he says is inaudible. There is some audience commotion at the end of the piece and Plant chides the audience to be quiet. "White Summer", which was requested by the audience, sounds fantastic in this show with Page pushing the boundaries of the eastern scales. "How Many More Times" contains the earliest reference to "For What It's Worth" and the only one for the Woody Woodpecker theme, imitating Page's staccato riffs.

A short, compact version of "Communication Breakdown" is the only encore before the band leave the stage for the second performance of the evening. The New York tape is one of the best from Zeppelin's first year and is an essential show to own. (Gerard Sparaco May 07)

This is the greatest eff'ing band ever :D

Led Zeppelin - Intimidator - March 7, 1970 Le Grand Casino De Montreux - Montreux, Switzerland (Empress Valley)

The first two discs of this three CD set contains the complete show taken from an excellent audience source. The last disc contains fragments from the soundboard. Disc one starts out at the end of the band introductions. A quick sound check follows and the boys plow right into We're Gonna Groove. The audience tape perfectly captures the atmosphere of the event and displays a stunning feeling of depth.

The instruments and vocals are very well balanced with Bonzo perhaps a teenie bit low in the overall. There's a 4 second gap in the tape during We're Gonna Groove that Empress Valley plugged in with an inferior quality tape. The next tape swap is during the final minutes of White Summer. About 80 seconds of the alternate tape is used to plug the hole. When the tape swaps to the alternate source, the depth and atmosphere of the main source becomes painfully obvious. The twenty five minute version of How Many More Times is fabulous. At around the 9 minute mark as see the first appearance of the soundboard tape. It's damn near seamlessly spliced into the audience tape.

The board tape is excellent quality, but pales in comparison to the audience tape as it lacks the atmosphere and feeling of depth that the audience tape has. I'm not complaining though as it fills in the remainder of the otherwise incomplete How Many More Times. This is crucial as the medley section of HMMT is fantastic! Whole Lotta Love is just a three minute fragment from the soundboard.

The last disc is from the soundboard and, as previously noted, pales in comparison to the stunning audience tape. It is overpowered at times, has dropouts, muddied audio and so on. A rather pitiful soundboard tape. Either Empress Valley wanted to milk every last dime out of their customers or they simply wanted to present all available material in one package. It's not my call. This is an essential addition to any collection and I can't recommend it enough! (Steve Prendergast February 03)

Fantastic set, and it is wonderful to finally have a 'close to' complete boot of this amazing show. Reinforces the fact that this audience tape is one of the best I have heard, literally makes you feel you are in the tiny arena, as has been noted several times before the atmosphere is fantastic.

It seems the theramin goes kaput on Whole Lotta Love, and Jonsey hops on the Hammond organ for some pretty psychedelic effects. Worth getting almost for that fact alone. (Tim Behrens July 03)

1971 Atlantic SD 12190

I played my copy of this LP several months ago and realized it was just plain worn out...almost unlistenable. Thanks to the GG vinyl sale, I now have a near perfect copy.

As the first track of side one begins...the power of Carl Palmer's drumming and Keith Emerson's keyboard on "The Barbarian" engulfs you. The side ends with the frantic "Knife~Edge", with the 14 minute "Take A Pebble" wedged in between.

Side 2 - "Lucky Man" - nuff said! (although "The Three Fates" and "Tank" are worth mentioning as well)

No wonder I wore the grooves off of my original LP. GREAT STUFF!

1976 Kirshner PZ 34224 LP

A really nice album with "Carry On Wayward Son" as the "hit single". The entire album is good. The more I listen to my old stuff...the more I appreciate it and the more I wonder where the innovation in rock is today. I try to listen to the new rock...but I rarely go WOW when I hear any of it. I still think WOW when I listen to music like Leftoverture.

Most people don't really like innovation when it comes to music, they like to listen to the same sounding stuff over and over.

Heres some innovation, but you probably won't like it, raps over 12 bar blues...

Harry Nilsson, Nilsson Schmilsson. An artist who definitely did it his way and left us too soon.

Spun this for the wife’s birthday. She loves Coconut.

Put de lime in de coconut, and drink 'em both up.

I love his rendition of Without You, and Jump Into The Fire always makes me push on the gas in the car or crank up the 2 channel rig to 110dB’s. (You might remember Jump Into The Fire was used for a scene in Goodfellas).

And then there is my favorite lyrics from Son Of Schmilsson
You're breaking my heart / You're tearing it apart / So f@ck you.:D And so much more.

WOW! If I've listened to this LP, it was years ago and I don't remember it. My bad! Gregg's first solo effort. This isn't your Allman Brothers lite. This is Gregg taking a totally different direction from the AB southern blues rock genre. Blues-Rock-Soul is the best I can describe it. Smoother and less edgy than the AB. A great recording with his backup band consisiting of the likes of Dr. John and Billy Payne. I really liked his later solo effort "I'm No Angel" that was recorded 9 years later. This one is BETTER! Highly recommended for any Allman Brothers or Gregg Allman fan!

I stumbled on this CD a while ago, but first downloaded the mp3's off Itunes. Bought the CD because it seemed like it was mastered pretty well.

My CDP is saying this is an HDCD although the package doesn't mention it. This is a great pop-jazz CD with very nice instrumentation, dynamics and good tunes.

Tinsley Ellis - Moment of Truth
2007, Alligator ALCD 4916, CD

The Highwayman dishes up a mess of Georgia tinged blues with this offering, penning 10 of 12 cuts himself. 'Storm Warning' has been one of my top rotation albums for years. This has the potential to knock it down a notch.

Only two other blues artists I've seen live are of this caliber: Freddie King and SRV. That's some good company to be in.
