Ahhhhhh! The smell of old vinyl! I know it well! I was just cleaning some vinyl on the VPI. It definately has a distinct smell. When you come to Pittsburgh next holiday season, I'll take you to a vinyl store why the entire store (5,000 ft2? and over 1,000,000 LPs) smell like that. Look Here (http://www.soundadviceblog.com/?p=203). also visit Here (http://jerrysrecords.com/)

As a die-hard NIN fan, I am always surprised when I hear a statement like this.
Of course, PHM was groundbreaking stuff and had the angsty anthem "Head Like A Hole" on it. It is a great album. But it's only the beginning of what has been a prolific career. Reznor has come a long way since then and his music is some of the most sonically interesting stuff you can find (IMHO).
Give The Fragile a listen. If you like PHM, try some of the post With Teeth stuff. The Downward Spiral is available on SACD and is amazing. There is a rumor afoot that The Fragile is going to get the 5.1 treatment and get an SACD release next year.
Point is, for an audiophile, there is more to NIN than PHM.
How is this?

I have listened to all Trents stuff...he records on Neve gear, I used to work for Rupert Neve. I just find PHM to be a groundbreaking effort and it is more melodic, musical ect. And I am a little older now...my angst music these days is more in the vein of FEAR- The Record...old school punk with attitude.
As for Mayer...I think Continuum is one of my favorite albums of the last few years, anyone who plays with the likes of Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan has to be pretty good. I have yet to get a CD copy of the new one and spin it. From what I have heard so far and discussed with friends in the audio bidness the new one is more commercial but hey....the guy has done his thing. He did early pop stuff then said "ok, heres what I really want to do" and busted out Continuum. Watch the "Where The Light Is" Blu-Ray with the Trio playing and tell me they are not hotter than hell...Jimi would be proud.
This morning it is James McMurtry - Live in Europe , my amigo Jon Dee Graham joins him for a blistering version of Jon Dee's own "Laredo"

I gave up on NIN when I started straying to more indie music and the people I had grown to dislike in high school were suddenly big fans.
I gave Trent another shot a little while back with the free download of "The Slip". And I was floored. I mean I was even curious enough to try it on 2-channel and 5-channel. I swear it was recorded for 5-channel and it is an incredible effort musically. You can really hear the growth but there is a backlash of old NIN in there.
I'm not sure how die-hard NIN fans would rate it, but it is an amazing album worth a good listen for any old-school reznor fans.

Luther Allison - Live In Chicago (Alligator 4869)
As accomplished a guitarist as he was, Allison wasn't a straight-ahead Chicago blues musician. He learned the blues long before he got to Chicago. What he did so successfully is take his base of Chicago blues and add touches of rock, soul, reggae, funk, and jazz.
Well into his mid-50s, Allison continued to delight club and festival audiences around the world with his lengthy, sweat-drenched, high-energy shows, complete with dazzling guitar playing and inspired, soulful vocals. He continued to tour and record until July of 1997, when he was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. Just over a month later, he died in a hospital in Madison, WI; a tragic end to one of the great blues comeback stories.
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drd600/d621/d6214478y45.jpg
Pulled from performances at the Chicago Blues Festival, Buddy Guy's Legends club with a couple of strays recorded in Lincoln, NE, that were too good not to include, this two-disc set captures Allison at the absolute peak of his powers. Disc one is the Chicago Blues Festival in its entirety with a bonus track of Luther jamming on the finale with Otis Rush and Eddie C. Campbell on a medley of two B.B. King tunes. Disc two is equally potent, a combination of performances pulled from Buddy Guy's Legends club and the Zoo Bar in Lincoln, NE. Luther simply played his heart and spirit out right to the end and these recordings spotlight it in a very fine manner. One of the label's best.
One of my favorite blues players.

A mix that my son remastered from the sountrack on a video game. Oblivion is what I think the game is called. He does a fantastic job of extracting music from DVD and games. I gave him Adobe Creative Suite 3 Master Collection and he has gone wild with it. I have to say his quality is pretty damn good. He also does beats and mixes on his own from several artists for a 'club' like experience. I'll have to post a video or two he has done for youtube when I can find them. He makes his own music videos too.

Shepherd's reverence for his musical roots are centerstage on this CD/DVD package featuring the guitarslinger with rhythm section of bassist Tommy Shannon and drumer Chris slayton performing with some of the greatest blues players of our time ... Full Descriptionas well as lesser-known but historically significant bluesmen. Traveling to their hometowns to record everywhere from juke joints to front porches, from New Orleans to Kansas, Shepherd celebrates and becomes part of blues history.
More than a mere live album, this collection of impromptu performances, recorded at both established venues and in kitchens and on front porches throughout the American South, captures a rapidly vanishing generation of bluesmen and women singing and playing with the blues musician Kenny Wayne Shepherd and his Double Trouble rhythm section. Featuring well-known artists such as B.B. King and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, as well as lesser-known performers such as Wild Child Butler and Cootie Stark, this combination CD and DVD is both a tribute to and a record of the musicians who influenced Shepherd, and a chance to observe the art form that laid the foundations for much of modern music. Often supported only by Shepherd's acoustic guitar, artists of the caliber of Cootie Stark, whose "Prison Blues" is a highlight, and the pianist Pinetop Perkins, whose "Grindin' Man" is accompanied by Muddy Waters' band, exude a matter-of-fact mastery born of decades of hard-won experience.

Roy Buchanan - Sweet Dreams-The Anthology
How this great blues player slipped under my radar for so long is beyond me. But this is a fantastic cd and he is (was) a phenomenal player.
Roy Buchanan has long been considered one of the finest, yet criminally overlooked guitarists of the blues rock genre whose lyrical leads and use of harmonics would later influence such guitar greats as Jeff Beck, his one-time student Robbie Robertson, and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons.
This substantial two-disc Polydor set culls ... Full Descriptionsome of the finest cuts from Buchanan's '70s recordings for a retrospective of his early career. The master guitarist's facility with mid-tempo grooves ("Baltimore"), steamy slow blues ("After Hours"), hard-driving rockers ("My Baby Says She's Going To Leave Me"), slide workouts ("Tribute To Elmore James"), revamped covers ("Hey Joe," "Down By The River," "Green Onions"), and evocative instrumentals (the title cut) is fully in evidence here.
Though Buch hadn't yet developed the mercurial, tone-manipulating style that would characterize his work in the '80s and '90s, his fluid runs, scratches, wails, screeching harmonics, and his utter command of the blues guitar vocabulary place him head and shoulders above even the better-than-better six-string slingers of the time. Though the general mood of SWEET DREAMS is somewhat more subdued than many of Buch's dates (with more of an emphasis on slow blues and ballads), the backing musicians lend keen, rugged support to the wizard's flights of fancy, particularly on the set's six live cuts. SWEET DREAMS is the most comprehensive and compelling overview of Buchanan's early work available.

Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SPZSyQ05L._SL500_AA240_.jpg
The BEST album Rod ever recorded IMO. "Gasoline Alley" and "Never a Dull Moment" are good and a couple of his albums with Faces like "A Nod Is as Good as a Wink...to a Blind Horse" and "Long Player" are very good too.
At some point Rod decided he wanted to be a Sexy Pop Star and it went downhill from there. I think even Rod himself has acknowledged that his music from his later years was just fluff and not very good.

Today was one of those rare, once in blue moon Sunday's where I had the house to myself for 8 hours. Wife and daughter were away. So I sat my ass down and listened to music. At the end of day I listen to music cause it shapes my mind. It gets my mind in a certain framework and I can then make decision's within this framework and a majority of the decision's turn out right.
A simple feel good, I am good album. - Joe Jackson Look Sharp
So you ask yourself, ok you're good but are you this good? Heck no. I wish I was as talented as this guy in what I do. Jackson Browne - The pretenders, Late for the sky and Looking East. There is an over 20 year gap between looking east and the other two and yes he's different on looking east, but the roots are the same. Thats why I love this guy.
Not only are other men smarter than you, some women are too.
The system wont let me repost pics, but I'm talking about Sarah McLachlan's Touch and Surfacing.
To this young kid. Good talent. He wants to stay true to his roots, which is good. I just wish he would outgrow the synthesizers an only use real muiscal instruments. But I will always have time of day for his stuff. David Gray - White Ladder and Draw the line.
To the three albums I have heard the most, in these 46 years.

Wow! Surprised a few here haven't been graced with the guitar style of the late, GREAT Roy Buchanan! I have about 6 or 7 or his title's on vinyl, truly a guitar god and one of the most heavily overlooked player's of the last 20/30 year's :o Definately get his stuff on vinyl, much better than digital IMHO ;)
