I've never heard Mr. Last's version but you don't have to be over 70 to enjoy "Moonlight Sonata." It is one of those masterpieces that never gets old regardless of the version.:) I have to look into some vinyl with Mr. Last's offerings.
EDIT: I just googled him, he's apparently a great jazz artist . . . cool.

It's tough stuff to get used to at first, Joe. It's a guy and a piano, and he's singing in German. But sometimes it expresses exactly how you feel when nothing else can. Give the Amazon 30 second blips a listen.
The guy himself is amazing. He was born with severe thalidomide deformities, and obviously had alot to overcome. He's quite generous with charitable groups.

I gotta tell you John, I have serveral recording both on vinyl & CD of Beethoven's ninth symphony and the choral section done in German on one of the recordings is my all time fav. It's how it was meant to be sung and it really does outshine the English versions.
I just looked up "thalidomide deformities" my God what a horrible deformity. He must have had a heck of time overcoming it especially as a piano player. God Bless him!

No, Joe, he sings along with a piano accompanist, that's traditionally how they do it. But an interesting thing about that is that he was refused admittance to a prestigious vocal music academy as a youth because they required students to have some level of piano mastery. A guy can't play piano with flippers.
I remember the big thalidomide horror in Europe, and how at that time footdragging by the FDA mainly prevented it from being an American tragedy too.
The last track of the 2nd cd set I mentioned, he breaks away from traditional lieder and does a free-form jazz bop thing that sounds like he and Bobby McFerrin could have a whale of a time.

Paul Hammond... an interesting history this band has. There was a huge revolving door for members in this band and the list reads like a "who's who" of progressive rock. I almost put this one back in the bin at Goodwill today, but I am happy I kept it now.

Etta James - Deep In The Night
1978, Warner Brothers, BSK 3156 - LP
I'm an ardent follower of the blues, but not too many female vocal performances do it for me in the genre. This is definitely the exception.
Etta was most surely at the top of her game in the late '70s. Her vocals here have a power and grace I haven't witnessed in her other works. A broad range of musical samplings, produced by Jerry Wexler, are knitted solidly together with not a dud track to be found on the album. She covers Joplin's anthematic "Piece of My Heart" beautifully and makes a song (Alice Cooper's "Only Women Bleed") relevant and spine tingling with her unique phrasing, style, and POWER.
A highly recommended addition to your blues collection.

I did, this week, however, copy all my audio cd's onto my pc, then copied that onto my office pc and my external hard drive. 122GB of my music that I can listen to anywhere now, and especially, not have to sift through individual cd's each time. Return to Forever: Returns - Live at Montreux (Blu-ray)
(Al DiMeola, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White)
Just got this a few days ago. HD Video is crisp, the 2-channel audio soundstage is excellent (the 2-channel is 24-bit 48kHz).
The drum solo in the bonus tracks is one of the most realistic-sounding percussion recordings I've heard. They did a great job with mic placement & mix levels, and it translates to impressively distinct placement of the drums and cymbals across the soundstage (for my 2.3TL setup anyway).
I'd even put the audio recording of this blu-ray ahead of the Jeff Beck Live at Ronnie Scott's blu-ray, which many consider one of the best blu-ray concert recordings out there.

The entire The Black Keys - Brothers album... on repeat for a couple weeks now.. incredible album.
Really cool blues-influenced rock.. has a good retro-feel, but these two guys are in their late20s or early 30s and only been making records since 2000-ish. Fairly spartan feel, mostly just a guitar, drums, and vocals.. occasional organ/keyboard..
Been a fan for years, but this album is gaining steam and some much-needed notoriety.

The Black Keys - Brothers
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5113GxfgY3L._SL500_AA300_.jpg
The maturation of the Black Keys as record makers and performers has been both subtle and startling. With their 2008 Nonesuch release 'Attack & Release' - the fifth album of their eight-year career which doubled the sales of their previous album and Nonesuch debut 'Magic Potion' - guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney illustrated the durability of their few-frills sound, a mysterious and heavy brew of seventies-vintage rock, classic R&B and timeless, downhearted blues. Producer and pal Danger Mouse, their first outside collaborator, didn't try to reinvent their sound but further isolated its essence with the help of a few carefully chosen guest players and some retro-modern electronic gear. It didn't need to get slicker to get better, or, as the Boston Globe put it, ''Attack & Release' proves that cleaning up the boys still won't stop them from tracking mud all over the house.'
Danger Mouse returned to co-produce 'Tighten Up' on 'Brothers,' but for the most part, the duo was on its own, spending ten days at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama and coming up with the an even more intensely focused, deeply soulful set that includes a cover of Jerry Butler's 'Never Gonna Give You Up.' The performances are inventive and impassioned: Auerbach extends his vocal range to falsetto on the lead-off track 'Everlasting Light' and 'The Only One'; 'Howlin' For You' opens with a Gary Glitter-style drum riff and the chorus practically invites singing along. The tunes offer a surprising amount of lyrical candor and more than a little dark humor; the grooves alternate between ballsy swagger and bluesy rumination. The album reflects where Auerbach and Carney have been lately, most recently collaborating with a who's who of New York City MC's, including RZA, Q Tip, Mos Def and Raekwon on the 2009 BlakRoc super-session organized by hip-hop impresario and Black Keys fan Damon Dash. They've also pursued projects on their own, Auerbach with his solo 'Keep It Hid' album and tour, Carney with his band Drummer and its debut disc, 'Feels Good Together.' Their maturation didn't happen just in the studio, though. Carney admits, 'Dan and I grew up a lot as individuals and musicians prior to making this album. Our relationship was tested in many ways but at the end of the day, we're brothers, and I think these songs reflect that.'
