Eagles of Death Metal - Already Died.
It's been stuck in my head for a couple of days now. I have no idea why my head chose that song. It's there when I wake up and it's there when I go to sleep. It's a good song but there are better on the album.
Eagles of Death Metal is a Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age side project. It's some great foot stomping and head boppin Rock and Roll.

I like "Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic"... "Under the Bridge" would be a great tune in any genre'.
Spent a lot of quality time on the road with three BMDP "loaners"... Some thoughts on them...
Danny Gatton - "Live at Annapolis"
First track threw me as it was more Jazz than Blues, but rest was Blues... If you are into Guitar pryotechnics, check it out... Some amazing play, but...
Never quite grabbed me as being soulful... not even their rendition of the "Rocky and Bulwinkle Theme". :) Gonna give it another shot though...
Millage Gilbert - "Three Faces"
The genuine article... very "blusey"... very engaging... very good listen... Only studio recording in the lot, but had a "live" feel to it...
Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets featuring Sam Meyers - "Live at the Grand Emporium"

It has a couple of techno sounding songs like Debut but I find Vespertine to be more soothing and mellow. I can't say it has any real catchy tunes but it does have a couple of lyrically stunning love songs that sort of paint a picture of where she was in her life. (or at least that's what I think anyway). ;) I'd compare it to "Like Someone in Love" from Debut. I like it.

He could rock in the early days! He lost that edge in the mid 70s when he went for the disco/glam/punk/balladeer/whatever sound. NEVER put out anything very good after Never A Dull Momemt IMO. Robinella & The CC Stringband - self titled
OK - I've got to do a little plug for this one. A local band made up University of Tennessee Knoxville grads. I saw them live and found out they had a CD released nationally in 2003. Sort of bluegrass with jazz influences (laid back bluegrass). Very, very nice. The lead singer has a unique voice that is pleasing...not your typical Loretta Lynn TN voice, but closer to Alison Krauss. Band is excellent and the recording is superb!
Our other locals have made their mark (good or bad) and millions...that being Kenny Chesney and Dolly Parton. I'd like to see this band do well. Go and check them out and maybe buy their CD. Available thru BMG for those members. It may not be for everyone's tastes ...but I like them.

He could rock in the early days! He lost that edge in the mid 70s when he went for the disco/glam/punk/balladeer/whatever sound. NEVER put out anything very good after Never A Dull Momemt IMO. If you've never heard this one GO FIND IT AND GIVE IT A LISTEN! "Maggie May" and "Every Picture Tell A Story" are worth the price of the CD by themselves.
have to agree on the Rod Stewart thing
the three albums titled:
Gasoline Alley
Every Picture Tells a Story
and Never A Dull Moment
are some of the best stuff he has put out (not including the things he did during his stint with the Jeff Beck group and Faces)
all that late 70's stuff and later im sure made him a lot of money but it was just god awful compared to his earlier work

The did a live show together in Japan and did a ton of old Genesis and Crimson tunes as well as a lot of Hackett solo stuff. Its a really good show if you are into the old school prog as well as Hackett newer stuff.

Dummy would be the album to start with, period.
Vocals, a soft spoken Natalie Merchant meets Suzanne Vega, with a splash of Bjork. The music, a slightly subdued, bass laden trance style, with obvious jazz and funk influences. The recording is nothing short of superb, very polished - but with some very gritty, low-fi sampling (turntables) inserted throughout - but tastefully done.
It's interesting stuff, to say the least.

Russ gave a very apt description of "Dummy". It will flex your PR's to be sure, and has some nice SDA treats as well...
BMDP,
If you like, I can add "Dummy" to the loaner list...
Dave,
Gave Larry another spin tonite, and paid a little more attention to detail (as in was not on the computer)... very nicely recorded to be sure.
Also spun the Stravinsky - Sciabrin disc while prepearing the evening's repast. Had never heard Gergiev and the Kirov S.O. before... nice...
Tonite mellowed out to a couple Francis Albert disks, "Songs for Swinging Lovers" and "Gold"... doesn't get much better.
Then a little Tony Bennett, "The Art of Excellence"... very nice...
Now playing very low we have:
J.S.Bach, "Sonatas for Flute", Jean-Pierre Rampal/ Trevor Pinnock (Harpsichord)/ Roland Pidoux (Cello)

Just picked up the new 4 disc King Crimson box set:
21st Century Guide To King Crimson Vol 1 (1969-1974)
the remastering on this set rocks..especially on some of the old
live stuff thats included
here is some info on it for those that are interested:
The aim of The 21st Century Guide To King Crimson is to replace the Frame By Frame 4-CD compilation (1991), taking advantage of technological advances, ten years of additional live and studio Crimsonising, and twelve years of archiving live material. Frame By Frame’s 3 studio + 1 live albums are being replaced by this two-volume 8-CD Guide, a comprehensive overview for new ears of all that is necessary in the Crimson corpus. Old-generation completists might disagree with some choices, but material not included in the Guide is available for new-generation completists, should they wish. The Guide can only exist now that the complete King Crimson recorded work (live and studio) is, for the first time, in one place: DGM; and a place where, arguably also for the first time, it is not being driven to serve the interests of business.
Robert Fripp
Wednesday 21st. July, 2004 (edited from the booklet introduction to the set)
-------------------------
Drawn from seven studio albums & a wealth of archive live performances, ‘The 21st Century Guide to King Crimson’ outlines the history of one of the most enduring & influential British rock groups. Covering the period 1969-1974, the
set consists of 2 CDs of studio & 2 CDs of live material. The studio tracks include material from the seminal debut album ‘In the Court of the Crimson
King’ through to the classic ‘Red’ album. The concert performances feature recordings from just prior to the release of ‘Court of..’ to the next to final concert by the mid seventies lineup in June 1974. All of the music has been digitally remastered, edited & assembled from the best source tapes available. In the case of ‘Court of..’ this is the first time the recently rediscovered original master tapes have been available for CD release. The release is packaged in a fold out book containing the CDs & booklet, housed in an outer slipcase. The booklet features a diary style timeline of the band detailing complete concert listings, recording dates, archive photos, posters, reviews, memorabilia & a new introduction by founder member Robert Fripp.

Just about every album was unique..the first two (Wake Of Poseidin and Crimson King) are pretty similar but then they got into thier Lizard/Islands period and got a little jazzier and and little more wacky....it seems every band lineup change pretty much marked a different direction for the band musically
I dont think I would reccomend this set to someone based on them liking Crimson King alone. The musical direction in the the period between 69-74 changed pretty drastically every few albums

The Left Banke - "There's Gonna be a Storm"
A couple klunkers, but also has a lot more here than "Walk Away Renee' " and "Pretty Ballerina" going for it...
Portishead - "Portishead"
Not up to the level of "Dummy", but not bad...
Mott the Hoople - "All the Young Dudes"
I consistantly foget how great this album is until the first notes hit my ears... another of the 50 or so in my all-time top 20...

BMDP,
Seems like every gathering I've been to lately someone is spinning one Keb CD or another. Just ordered his self-titled.
Spent Friday evening listening to Hamilton Loomis at a local club, Cactus Moon. The kid is growing up. Voice has gotten stronger. His guitar work is still astounding. And his stage presense is something to behold.
Now has what he calls his "little guitar", which is what it is. It's about a half-scale job that was custom made for him in Austin out of walnut by Chip Todd... just gorgeous.
http://www.hamiltonloomis.com/images/jrcactusmoon.jpg
Spent much of today with my freshly autographed copy of his latest CD, "Kickin' It". Great stuff... his best effort of the three I now own.
He's been expanding his travels yearly. I definitely recommend you look for him in your area....
http://www.hamiltonloomis.com/
Found a small write up on him at AMG... DId not realize he had two CD's prior to the three I own (all autorgraphed) and his first, "Hamilton", was Grammy nominated...

Just ordered it.

Keb' Mo' - Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues
Like the blues? Grab this one. From the opening contemporary genius of "Soon As I Get Paid" through brilliantly personalized covers of such blues standards as "Come On In My Kitchen" and "It Hurts Me Too" KM breathes new life and excitement into a true American art form.
Several tracks are HDCD, all are superbly engineered and mastered.

BMDP,
Probably won't see Ham your way until late spring or summer (although you will hear him much sooner.... I promise). Spending most of the winter in the south... TX, NM, etc. This spring he's booked a a couple weeks in the UK. and is hoping to add some continent dates as well.
He did do some East Coast gigs this past summer, and I think it included one Baltimore area date.
Anyway you won't have to go further than my sig to keep track, but if you e-mail him, you can get on the monthly schedule mailing list.
Listening wise Monday... After more plays of "Kickin' It"...
My new, Eric Clapton - "Slowhand", SACD... Thanks, Jesse. The Stereo hybrid track is very nice.
The Flying Burrito Brother's "Farther Along: The Best of..."
Have never really been a fan with my only exposure being their "Last of the Red Hot Burritos", a so-so effort, but many say this group is where country rock began, so this was a WTH buy. And it turns out that I am pleased that I made it.
In addition to some fine, original songs (mostly by co-founders Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman), there are some excellent covers including: "Wild Horses", "Dark End of the Street" and, even the BeeGee's, "To Love Somebody".

You know, I don't think I have ever contributed to this thread...not sure why. I work from home and listen to music almost all of the time while working, so here we go.
Today, so far
The Smiths - "Rank" (their live CD from the late 80's)
Tito and Tarantula - Tarantism - For you fans of blues rock you should check these guys out if you don't know them. They rock...did alot of the music for Robert Rodriguez's films "From Dusk 'Til Dawn" and "Desperado..." including the tune that Salma Hayek dances (but unfortunately doesn't strip) to in "Dusk".

A couple new Arrivals in today's mail:
Hamilton Loomis' "Hamilton"
From 1997... 1st release by a very young Ham. Young voice and a little more "showey" on the guitar than he is now. Still, good stuff with nice work with Bo Diddley on "I Know Bo Diddley"... At the end of the song Bo says to HL, "You wanna know somethin'? I'm scared of you..."
Howlin' Wolf "Bluesmaster"

Way cool! Another blast from the past. I have "Argus" on vinyl but haven't listened to it in years. Wishbone Ash is an all but forgotten, great band. One of the few to feature twin lead guitarists.
"Live Dates" is one of my few radio station winnings. Also won a pair of tickets to see them in an old downtown Cleveland movie theater, circa winter of '73-'74. Great show... Opening act was some new guy out of NJ named Spingsteen or something... wonder whatever became of him? :D
There's an excellent 2-disc WA compilation out... "Time Was/ The Wishbone Ash Collection".
Listening to some new arrivals today:
The James Gang - "Live in Concert"
It's pretty much the "... Rides Again" song line-up. After some strained opening vocals by my boy, Joe, this disc really warms up. Joe's guitar playing is very strong, maybe his zenith, and much "bluesier" than anything else I've heard from him. Some extended, improvised solos in about half the tracks make this one worth a buy... if you're into Joe.
Leon Russell - "... and the Shelter People"
Another one of the "lost tapes" (lost due to age) from my college days has now been replaced. Pretty much the quintessential Leon release. Memories of it were a little better than the reality, but the reality ain't bad so I am glad that I found and bought it.

Tonight, I'm getting in the Christmas spirit...
Handel's Messiah performed by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and The Stockholm Bach Choir - Anders Ohrwall - Conductor. A SACD by FIM (First Impressions Music). This is one of the finest recorded pieces of music I own. Start with one of the greatest works of music ever written, performed by truly world class musicians/vocalists and re-mastered extremely well as a SACD. It is a unique disc in many ways. Every time I hear the Hallelujah (Chorus) cold chills run down my spine.
