Jackson Browne - Late For the Sky THE BEST of all of the Jackson Browne albums (and I have them all). Eight songs, 40 min. 48 sec. of music and I am NEVER tempted to hit the remote to skip a single second. It is that good IMO and one of my top 5 albums of all time.

I don't know guys....I'd have to give "Everyman" the nod but agree that both are stellar albums.
IMO they contain some of the finest songs ever written by anyone from the Baby Boom generation.....
Well I’ve been out walking
I don’t do that much talking these days
These days--
These days I seem to think a lot
About the things that I forgot to do
For you
And all the times I had the chance to
And I had a lover
It’s so hard to risk another these days
These days--
Now if I seem to be afraid
To live the life I have made in song
Well it’s just that I’ve been losing so long
I’ll keep on moving
Things are bound to be improving these days
These days--
These days I sit on corner stones
And count the time in quarter tones to ten, my friend
Don’t confront me with my failures
I had not forgotten them

Yes, hip hop was first. There is a VERY good book out there, Yes Yes Y'all, and it provides a incredibly detailed history on the origin of hip hop and rap.
There are still some great rappers out there. If you don't about them though, then yes, rap is in the gutters. I think its at its lowest point ever, but its going to get worse. I mean, do you really know what Skeet skeet skeet means? Good lord!
My recommendations for you to check out some good rap, although its not all new 2005 stuff, is (I apologize if you already know of them) Dilated Peoples, Del the Funkee Homosapien, Deltron, Blackstar, Mos Def, Jurassic 5, Talib Kweli, Common, The Roots, Blackalicious, Gift of Gab, Jedi Mind Tricks, Peanut Butter Wolf, and thats all I got right now. Also, I hate to admit it, but Eminem and Ludacris are pretty unique.

Nelly can be straight gutter, he can flow with melody, brag, or he can spit something positive and educational. I see your point but I also see my own.
Nelly is a rapper/hip hop artist. At least that is what he is classified as. There was jewelry and dookie ropes around RUN D.M.C.s neck, but I will be damnded if they were not hip hop artists. Most rappers or hip hop artist talk about a lot of the same things, and alot of different things also, but, they all deliver a positive message in some songs and other they are bull$h!tt!n about jewelry and cars or women. Hip hop is a culture based music, and rap is braggin' or yackin' about whatever. Both were done by the forefathers and by the newbies. These new artist have plenty of originality. That is what sells millions.
To me one the greatest of our time would be KRS ONE. Check out the album "By Any Means Necessary". That was one of my favorites. The first song called "My Philosophy" was off the hook.
Check it out Swerve if you have not already.

Artists?
Rap and hip hop are the most talentless type of music on earth.
Lets see, you rip off somebody elses music and screw it up and play it over and over again thru a processor.
Then you talk (not sing cause that would take talent so you just talk) about how much money you have and how big your wheels are and how all the chicks want you.
Then you make a video with you standing in a Hummer or some other ridiculously expensive car so everybody knows how much money you have, and have a bunch of chicks dancing around a pool while you wear $45,000 chains around your neck.
Wow! Sheer genius!
I guess as long as you call it rap or hip-hop or whatever its ok. As long as you dont call it music cause its anything but.

Thats may be true for several of the rap groups, but it does not serve as a proper blanket statement for all groups now, nor the entire history of rap.
There are many good rap musicians out there. Yes, it is a form of music.

No, I stand by my statement for ALL rappers and hip-hoppers out there.
Ive nothing against rap really Ive actually been known to listen to a rap song once or twice but I take exception when theyre called musicians or artists.
Now R & B on the other hand I would consider music even tho the music is once agains electronically processed and sampled, at least there is somebody singing which takes talent (unless youre Ashlee Simpson).

There's a plain difference between the Jurasic 5's and Nelly's in the music industry.
I'm sorry but Gift of Gab, Lyrics Born, Blackalicious, Eyedea and Abilities have all been around and can be considered artist.
all these "rappers" are just in it for marketing and money. but the ones that don't sellout (IE the ones i mentioned above) should be considered artists.
Art is a very funny thing to discuss because everyone has a strong viewpoint.
I listen to everything from Bob Dylan to Tupac so obviously my opinion is going to be very different than that of MacLeod's...

It takes talent to write lyrics, make beats, and as far as flossing your riches goes. That is the persons business. It is entertainment, and it sells millions and millions of records nationwide, and also makes for good dancing at clubs and parties. Not to mention the money that is made by the artist. It is more likely based on your culture or background, where you grew up and the things that you encounter in life to be able to fully grasp the concept of Flossin' your riches. Kids look up to a lot of these positive role model type rappers. Rap/Hip-Hop was a positive outlet for a whole lot of kids that were once in trouble or jailed. That is the main reason that the rappers talk about what they have now, because some of them come from nothing. I am not a jealous person, and I am happy to see a poor person make it rich. If you see a kid and he looks at Nelly or Ludacris, he would turn to rapping to get paid, and therfore this would possibly be a positive outlet to keep them out of trouble moreso than make them sell "crack" or do something stupid of that sort. All rappers are not positive, and those guys should not be exposed to kids ears. I will admit that there are some a$$holes that call themselves artists, that I would never expose my kids to.
The sampling makes for a old school/new school twist. That is how the artists corner the market: get the old heads and the young people listening to a song with old school beats and put lyrics to it. It is genius if you ask me. I will admit that some of the artists screw up the song if they don't do it right.
Every man can call it how he sees it, but that doesn't make him right or wrong. Heck, I would not play Heavy Metal through my system, but I will not critisize it or anyone who likes it. I just don't understand it, therefore it gets no play by me. I could say it is stupid to trash your guitar and amps after a performance, but if your fans like it, hell tear it up! Music is a personal preference and to each his own.
Just my two cents. Carry on gents.

Hamilton Loomis - All Fired Up and Live
Thanks to Tour2ma I have a copy and gave it a good listen last night and today. This artist is part of Tour's signature and he has been promoting him on this forum.
Because of that, I feel a mini review is in order.
Musically, Loomis delivers. Excellent skills and he obviously has a very good Texas blues, rock, funk pedigree. He has a decent voice that works ok with this genre. Having said that...he needs to let someone else help with the lyrics (he has writing credit for them all). Listening to any one song individually and the lyrics are fine.
The problem is that EVERY song is about:
- She loved me good
- She loved me bad
- I just found love
- I just lost love
- I've got no love
- She's my new love
- She's leaving me
- I'm gettin' laid
- I'm not gettin' laid
- etc....
Just a wee bit one dimensional IMO. I understand that this is THE BLUES...and that he's a guy in his twenties...but please....could we have something about his dog dying, or his boss is a jerk, or his landlord kicking him out, or the weather, or even politics....just something else!
A track came up that was just an instrumental and I found myself really enjoying it for the sheer quality of the music (without the love lyrics).
The kid has a lot of talent and can make really good music. He has started with a formula...but he needs to get beyond that. This is his first CD and possibly his second one has some different themes. Maybe if he teamed up with a good writer...
Anyway, thanks to Tour for this CD. I really enjoyed it a lot. (in spite of my criticism)

That is ironic, I was raised in Chicago, and I can't find a good Gyro down here anywhere.
The BBQ is off the hook in Memphis. Interstate, A&R, Tops, Neely's, Pig-N-Whistle, Pollard's, and The Rendezvous. Just to name a few places with good BBQ that I eat at.
Is Gridley's still around? My parents and Mr Gridley were friends before he passed. His first waiter ended up with the business somehow. Back in the day it was the best. Even better than Rendevous. We better start another thread before somebody gets upset.

A soulful voice, a lively taste of alterna song writing set to boom-box drums & bass, Nashville strings, swirling synth, ambient sounds, and crunching guitars…..Damn thing is already OOP, only the Jap version is avail. One of my favorite cd’s I don’t listen to often enough.
Production is a tiny bit ragged, but it adds to the overall funky/edgey sound which compliments Shea's soulful voice. Think Joss Stone meets Fiona Apple.

Aw, Hendrix is crap. Aren't you just TIRED of hearing the same songs played over and over on the radio, "Hendrix's Greatest Hits"? They are so boring.
You won't hear any of this stuff played on the radio but it is among his best work (Hendrix wrote 4 of the six). Along with drum great Buddy Miles and bass player Billy Cox, this live show at the Filmore on New Years Eve 1969 is a wonderful album. Every bit as good of a "power trio" as Cream (and I really like Cream). Miles' version of "Changes" is better on his live album with Carlos Santana...but Hendrix puts an interesting interpretation on this song. 22 minutes of "Who Knows" and "Machine Gun" alone are worth the price of the album.
Not crap....not boring....timeless!

Although I do like the direction Hendrix was going w/BOG I must say Buddy Miles is pretty bland as a drummer compared to Mitch Mitchell. MM just adds so much excitement. He's always playing out of his mind, always on the edge, but seems to pull it off brilliantly. His strict jazz style of playing has no equal and really lent to the "space trip" you sometimes get listening to Hendrix. Buddy was much more conventional in style and tended to lay a soild backbone to the rythum section. A different approach w/much different results.
I can see where MC may feel this way especially about some of the common studio stuff. Live Hendrix is where it's at. Check out some of the BOG songs with Mitch on the drums. Most live Hendrix really allows you to get your Groove On...IMO

Buddy Miles -Changes
A little too soulful for me, not enough groove. My impression may change but I doubt it. Really sounds dated; a couple good tracks. Overall won't be in my rotation. I paid next to nothing for it a while ago so I took a chance, with mediocre results. Everytime I dig in my music pile I discover something lost and forgotten.

Haven't heard that one, shack....I may have to seek it out. I do have a Jeff Beck/Santana boot called "Reunited" which is excellent.
