Shawn Mullins - The First Ten Years
I had never payed any attention to Shawn Mullins until getting an earful of it at TPGII a year&1/2 ago. I immediately picked up the "Soul's Core" CD, and found that I liked his style and the quality of the recording. This compilation gives a pretty good sampling of his earlier works that are hard to find otherwise, as well as a couple of newer, soundtrack recordings: Covers of Bowie's "Changes" and George Harrison's "What Is Life". Not as polished as "Soul's Core", but there's some good stuff here. The recordings sound "real", not over-produced. One of my favorites is "Canyons and Caverns". He mentions in the liner notes that he wanted it to sound like he's in your living room.

Jon Dee Graham's The Great Battle. I love it and his last release Hooray For The Moon. "Battle" is produced by Austinite and Dylan guitar man Charlie Sexton who is also known for Producing Lucinda Williams. His guitar and voice carry textures of his west Texas roots meets Tom Waits and his writing evokes the everyman in all of us. A former original True Believer he is fast gaining cred as a songwriter on par with his former bandmate Alejandro Escovedo, in fact the two are playing lots of shows together these days...Jon Dee just finished a list of tour dates with John Haitt who is also a pretty darn good writer as well.

Another highly rec female singer/songwriter is Erin McKeown. She has a new cd out and she has a lot of flair and style. This best describes her and I think many in here would like her, recording/production are top notch as well. (shamelessly lifted from cduniverse.com)
2005's WE WILL BECOME LIKE BIRDS, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Erin McKeown hones her pop-rock sound. Whereas her past records veered from jazz to folk to country, BIRDS finds McKeown crafting songs that subtly mix these genres but fall squarely into the melodic rock style of artists like Aimee Mann. McKeown's high, clear, girl-next-door voice is in fine form, bold enough to carry the majestic, opening "Aspera," but nuanced enough for the gentle, acoustic number "Float." McKeown is backed by a top-notch band here that includes renowned session drummer Matt Chamberlain (who has played with Tori Amos) and bassist Sebastian Steinberg (formerly of Soul Coughing). She's also joined by Argentine vocalist Juana Molina (on "The Golden Dream," a gauzy, Wurlitzer-driven number) and the husky-voiced Peter Mulvey (on the spare "Delicate December"). One of McKeown's most confident and cohesive albums, WE WILL BECOME LIKE BIRDS showcases the talents of an artist hitting her stride
I discovered her of all places on NPR (National Public Radio)

THE greatest music composer of all time
There's some guys like Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Handel, Shubert, Haydn, Mahler, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Wagner, Stravinsky, Debussy, Vivaldi, Bartok, Mendelssohn, Strauss, Listz, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Verdi, Dvorak, Berlioz, Prokofiev, Mussorgsky, Puccini, Gershwin, Holst, Copland and maybe a few more that MIGHT just push Williams for that #1 spot.

Freddie Hubbard's "Ready for Freddie" and others from the early 1960s. Always did like his tone and energy way more than Miles Davis's. Too bad he fell apart after the early 1970s.
Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage". Freddie Hubbard was on this great recording as well.

John Butler Trio - Sunrise Over Sea
First Album in the US for this Australian Group. EXCELLENT - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Looking for something new. Here it is. I heard one track on a local station that plays "Adult/contemporary/alternative/rock" stuff. I liked the cut and bought the CD and found the rest was very good. Blues inspired alternative would be the best description.

BTW, H9 how's that Chapman cd?
It's very good. She's still a great story teller/social commentator with her lyrics. I'd still consider this cd on the folky side. She has added some groovy drums on most songs and some keyboards, but it's far from electronic or heavy on beats. The drums sometimes get the songs moving a bit. Her voice is great as usual, it's nice to hear her again. I'd rate it a solid 4 out of 5. I'm really enjoying it. If you are a fan of her's you won't be disappointed. It's nice to hear her out of a total folk guitar setting. This should get a lot of play on the Adult Alternative/Adult Contemporary music channels.

I will definitely have to get by there. Probably too cold for golf by the time we get there (but you never know with the heat wave we've been having).
