Finally, an excellent LP of: "Organ Grinder Swing" - The incredible Jimmy Smith featuring Kenny Burrell and Grady Tate.
The CD of this was one of the SRT demos during the Polk tour bought that and now i'm enjoying it on vinyl. Jimmy absolutely rocks on this and Burrell does some of his best session work.

In your face Texas blues/rock with his Coltrane roots mixed in smoothly. This guy plays with the complete abandon of Hendrix and can ride a tone that would make SRV grin ear to ear.

Warming up already, eh Mike?

Spinning a little Joe Jackson (the Jackson I can play at F1's place) tonite modestly cranked. Actually spinning a lot as the release is his dbl disc complilation:

Jackson Browne - Solo Acoustic Vol. 1 (http://www.jacksonbrowne.com/discography/albums/5251.aspx)
2005

An intimately personal feeling is rendered between artist and listener in these live recordings, featuring Browne's haunting and challenging lyrics with only his own guitar and piano work as accompaniment. His self-effacing candor and humor with the audience is delightful and proves what we fans always knew -- he's a bright and personable individual with something to say and a heartfelt respect for this earth and all its citizens.

His tasteful slide work on "Your Bright Baby Blues" and powerful piano work on "For A Dancer" are the standout performances for me. But, there's not a bad cut on the album. Highly recommended!

Randall Bramblett - Thin Places (http://randallbramblett.com/buy.php)
2004 - New West Records

Soul, pop, jazz and blues expertly woven through the musings of a true American poet and storyteller. Randall has his finger on the pulse of the human condition, dancing slowly (madly at times) on the edge of despair while hope, love, faith and compassion anchor him solidly from sliding.

His B3 fills throughout this album are exquisite. Edging a bit more toward the jazzy side of his talents than the marvelous "No More Mr. Lucky", this release is so well arranged and entertaining that you'll just say "WOW" and spin it again.

Keep 'em coming, Randall! And, thanks to Dave James for the introduction to this unique talent!

I've been a huge Walter Trout (http://www.waltertrout.com/) fan for years, but I'd never heard this import. WOW! He really brings home the bacon in this release. His power with the guitar is palpable and, as the title suggests, relentless. Highly reminiscent of SRV and Double Trouble after the addition of Reese Wyans on B3. But, Walter also shows his polish on a couple of tracks playing acoustic lead.

There's not a track worth skipping on this one. Highly recommended!

Buddy Guy - "Bring 'Em In"

I bought this one at the suggestion of F1nut, and it's been a pleasant surprise. Critics have panned it for being "the last throws of a blues elder statesman" which, BTW is horse****. Buddy has got his groove on solid and covers some material even he thought he never could/would. At 69, he still has the sweetly unique vocal range that has always made him a standout. And, no one can match his tone up and down the neck of a Strat -- including his "buddy" EC. Buddy made his mark, from the ground up in Chicago, covering Top 40 juke hits to keep bread on the table. He can still cover anyone -- from the Beatles to Curtis Mayfield -- and this album showcases that talent in a thoroughly listenable manner.

Mem Shannon - "Memphis In The Morning (http://www.memshannon.com/music.htm)"

Released May 8, 2001

Imagine the vocal stylings of Riley B. King and Brook Benton rolled into one. Then back that magic with solid, soulful, funky arrangements and you've got an album I rate as a "must have" for you blues lovers. His cover of King's "Why I Sing the Blues" is without equal in the genre, and the only non-original track.

Mem Shannon - Spend Some Time With Me (http://www.memshannon.com/music.htm)
(Shanachie 9013)
Released February 16, 1999 (Fat Tuesday)

1. Who Are They
2. Paying My Dues
3. Not My Friend
4. Don't Talk About My Mama Listen Now (http://www.memshannon.com/Mama%20Sample.MP3)

8. A Certain Shade of Blue
9. Spend Some Time with Me
10. Mother's Love
11. Born in the Time
12. No Such Thing (My Humble Opinion: 2nd Movement)

Blues, as a unique American art form, can be so much more than tales of the down and out, or laments about love gone bad. It takes a unique talent and Mem Shannon is in full possesion of such a talent.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Mem Shannon stirs the saucy spice of The Big Easy into a rich gumbo of personal experience, pointed social observation, and unabashed love for music -- on a burner stoked with funk. Whether in his recordings or a live set playlist, you'll be hearing 99% original material from one of the very best songwriters in the genre. Couple that with a voice that ranges from pure silk to gravel and growl, and guitar licks all his own, and you've got a contemporary, triple threat artist with few peers.

If this album won't get your ass shakin', your ass is broken!

Eric Bibb - Painting Signs (http://www.ericbibb.com/index.html)
(Hatman - 2005)

I first caught up with Eric live as an opener for Robert Cray in the summer of 2001. He's a hard act to follow and Cray brought him back for three duets at the end of his set--mesmerizing!

Bibb has "a voice to die for" and is so firmly in touch with his musical roots (gospel, blues, jazz, folk and rock) that he transitions from one to the next seamlessly with exquisite acoustic guitar stylings. This release, IMO, best showcases that versatility.

Although born and raised in NYC into a famous musical family, Eric had to go to Europe (and co-found his own record label, Manhaton Records) to find the artistic freedom with his studio sessions that he needed. He's toured the world and amassed a huge following of loyal fans. But, his US tour dates are often infrequent. You can catch him from now through Thanksgiving touring with John Mayall and Robben Ford, mostly in university venues. Catch him if you can.

Another "unknown" starving artist with buckets of talent, found and fostered by the Music Maker Foundation (http://shop.store.yahoo.com/musicmakerstore/index.html), Lee has an unrelenting drive to his guitar work and a voice built for the blues.

This album, Lee's first, was recorded in three hours and has the "get down and get it" feel of a live set. If you enjoy an artist that can leave you breathless and wishing the album had twice as many tracks, this is for you. If you're in the Milwaukee area, you can catch up with Lee and the group live at local venues.

Blue, you out-drew me on this one. I had planned on doing this album on the Part II thread (but it sort of disintegrated). As a Jackson Browne fan I thought this might be just another compilation album with nothing new. To date I have his entire catalog sans compilations. I bought this one and am glad I did. The music is great. I'm not so fond of all the crowd noise and intros. For that stuff I would rather see the video like with VH-1's "Storytellers" series.

Not unlike "Running On Empty" which (correct me if I'm wrong) was his last live release and its rock concert vibe (totally cool and contemporaneous), this offering has the feel to me (still totally cool and contemporaneous) of fans that have followed and matured with him for decades. I enjoy the crowd interaction and insights into these tunes he provides with the intros. His narrative regarding a fan call-out for "Peaceful Easy Feeling" made me laugh outloud.

Stephen Stills - Man Alive
TITAN / PYRAMID - Catalog No.: 501022
Release Date: Aug 9 2005

Stephen Stills' first solo release since 1991, and that CD is so obscure that even many Stills fans aren't aware that it exists...Stills Alone. I have and like it, but obviously it was not a hugh commercial success. Before that you have to go back to the first two Self titled albums and Manassas from 1970, 1971 and 1972 respectively to find Stills at his best. It has been a long dry spell for Stephen between "good" solo efforts. He occasionally did some work with CSN but I really don't know where he has been. Whatever it was he has put together a very good effort in 2005. He still has excellent guitar skills and his acoustic work is as good as ever. The voice is showing the effects of years of the "rock and roll lifestyle" but soul is still there in fingers. There are several very good cuts and a few so-so efforts but overall the album is pretty good...especially if you are a Stills or CSN(Y) fan. Some of his old pals show up on the album...Neil Young, Graham Nash, Russ Kunkel and Herbie Hancock.

Al Dimeola is a favorite.

The Snaggs-Hot Tomato-Local band with the pop sensibilities of the Beatles and Cheap Trick. Lush female vocals by Holland Zander (daughter of Cheap Tricks Robin Zander). Crunching guitar riffs, a Zaney (Sideshow Bob lookalike, from the Simpsons) bass player, solid drums. More in the style of the power pop formula. They have their own take on songs by Depeche Mode, Led Zep, Beatles and of course a few Cheap Trick songs along with many many originals. IMO, they are on the verge of being discovered and going national. Very enjoyable to see live and a very enjoyable locally/self produced CD.

I know Hush, Hush... The Siegel-Schwall Band (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll) recorded an 11+ minute version for their '71 self-titled release. It is a live track as I recall.

With almost 2" of rain here today and more coming Riders on the Storm seems appropriate here right now...

Solid album with amazing covers of Knopfler's "I Think I Love You Too Much" -- with Mark on backing vocals and electric guitar -- and Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" -- with George backing vocally and adding acoustic riffs. Also features Jeff Lynn's backing guitar, Paul Shaffer at the keys, and Bobby Whitlock wailin' on B3.

I just lined up a few CD's and listened to 'em on my Sony shelf system and curb-salvaged speakers. I've also listed the songs that I particulary wanted to listen to and/or stood out to me.

Dwight Yoakam - There Was A Way
The Distance Between You and Me
Since I Started Drinkin' Again
Turn It On, Turn It Up, Turn Me Loose
It Only Hurts When I Cry

I've relatively recently discovered Dwight Yoakam and have grown pretty fond of his style. I thought the chorus from It Only Hurts When I Cry was pretty cool:
"The only time I feel the pain
Is in the sunshine or the rain
And I don't feel no hurt at all
Unless you count when teardrops fall
I tell the truth 'cept when I lie
And it only hurts me when I cry"

Brad Paisley - Mud On the Tires
Mud On the Tires
That's Love
Whiskey Lullaby
The Best Thing That I Had Goin'

Eric Clapton - Pilgrim
My Father's Eyes
River of Tears

The Eagles - Hotel California
Hotel California

Alan Jackson - Drive
Bring On the Night
The Sounds
Designated Drinker

I've listened to this CD many times before, and I have almost always skipped over these three songs. But not long ago, for some reason, I listened to them, and they grabbed me. I thought (and still do) they're quite powerful, and beautiful to boot.

The tune from Bring On the Night is what catches my attention. The Sounds is just as beautiful, and it has some neat lyrics: "You can't hear it, but the noise is killing me." Then at the end, it changes to "I can hear it, and the silence is killing me." Designated Drinker is a great song, and on this CD it's a duet with George Strait - it just couldn't be any better!

George Strait - Ten Strait Hits
Baby's Gotten Good At Goodbye
What's Going On In Your World

Michael Buble - It's Time
Feeling Good
A Foggy Day (In London Town)
You Don't Know Me
Quando, Quando, Quando (Duet with Nelly Furtado)
Home

I can't express how amazed I am by Michael Buble. He's just an amazing singer. You Don't Know Me is a neat song, and so is Quando, Quando, Quando. Plus, the latter is a duet with Nelly Furtado, who I've never heard of before, but judging from her performance in this song, I want to find out more about her. And, of course, you have Home, the song I bought this CD for. Amazing song.

Anna Nalick - Wreck of the Day
Breath (2 AM)
Citadel

I'm also amazed by Anna Nalick's voice. I had planned on listening to more of the CD, but practically everything on it is good and it was getting late, so I just turned off the CD-player.

I had also planned on listening to some Jack Johnson, but I guess I'll have to let that wait until tomorrow...assuming I don't have some new CD's to listen to tomorrow...:D:D:D:D

Enough blue-eyed soul for the hardcore fan. But, nothing sounds better in his song book to me than his blues -- and this album has some great blues cuts. Similar to the 2003 release "What's Wrong With This Picture", his social and cultural opinions are coming more to the forefront. A function of age, or just the general state of "things"? Hell, you be the judge of that. Personally, I like the bluesier feel of late coupled with his messages.

One of my top 5 Live albums. Sonically it's just ok, and I usually am not a big fan of live concert albums becuase all of the crowd noise and talking tends to take away from the music. http://www.sonymusic.com/artists/JanisJoplin/Art/65786cvr.jpg

I can't recall any album of this era impressing me as much, and there were some great ones. But, with "Pearl", Janis finally defined her unique style of white blues with a backing band that wasn't trying to outdo her wailing vocalizations. Released a few months after her death, this offering withstands any test of time.

I've had the album on vinyl since its release, but haven't listened to it in many years. After hearing Susan Tedeschi's new release "Hope and Desire" there was something gnawing at the back of my mind. Granted, Tedeschi owes more to Bonnie Raitt for her vocal styling than any other female blues artist. Whether she acknowledges it or not, she owes Janis Joplin for the timing and phrasing of her latest works (which, BTW, have elevated her beyond "just okay" in my book) -- and especially she owes Janis for "Pearl".

I snagged a pristine copy of "Pearl" on reel to reel recently. It delivers the quality of this landmark release in spades. Simply amazing and, after 35 years still very highly recommended.

Truer words...seemed like that to me on Tedeschi's previous works (okay but not stellar) IMHO, Joplin is the mark by which many(not all) female blues/soul singers are judged. BTW, I swear there's some Aretha on that Tedeschi too, female "swagger", it's a wonderful thing.

I have always really liked INXS. I watched Rockstar without fail and have been anticipating the new release. When I had a chance to listen multiple times I must say I'm a bit disappointed. Possibly my expectations were/are too high. It's solid but they really played it safe big-time and JD's vocals aren't anything special. Really very much the same as Hutchence. Nothing really stands out and they've certainly lost that "catchy" edge they had in the 80's. Had I not been so involved in the show this whole release could have been passed over very easily and never even registered a blip on my radar.

It's not bad, but nothing notable either. Very blase', IMO

Very original artist. He's been getting a lot of play on NPR and XM with "Government Lied". Do a Google on him. He walked away from music for two decades for artistic differences with producers.

More mountain than bluegrass with the banjo, no jazz leanings like Fleck. Also a respectable guitarist. Good stuff!

B. B. King - Live In Cook County Jail
4-Track Stereo Reel-to-Reel

Thanks to Dave James for this masterpiece! I've had this album on vinyl for decades. The SQ of this tape blows the vinyl release away and is the absolute best reel I've run through this deck.

When you listen to Riley B's vocals from this point in his carreer, it's easy to see what his legendary status was built on. As my wife said "It has real passion!" Many of his signature guitar licks here have a vitality, attack, and sense of immediacy that those who became fans later in his career might just be shocked by. The jam he builds from "The Thrill Is Gone" is a prime example. If you've not heard this version, you've really never "heard" this song, IMO.

Way cool, Dave!

Agreed, Both the "Regal" and "Cook County" pieces are must haves in any format
The B.B. trademark sound has mellowed over the decades and these two shows have a different energy/feel than studio versions of the time and certainly compared to now (live, and a fine live show he still puts on)
A great example of his "mature" sound can be found on "Blues on the bayou" (1998).
Great sound and velvety guitar tones, plus his veteran road crew make Blues on the bayou a fine addition to anyones collection.

First album with all 5 original members in 20 years and it really shows.....the band is in top form and I can't believe I am typing this....Simon LeBon actually sounds great on this album. Sounds like it could be! No joke though that disk, i'm guessing the time alignment does it, through the new/old Thiels just gains a new depth/dimension.

Joan Osborne - How Sweet It Is

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00006GNQF.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Release Date: September 17, 2002
Label: Compendia
Catalog No.: 9365

Despite the image most have of Joan Osborne as the "Pop" singer who brought "One of Us" to the airwaves....Her element is a rock/blues/soul genre. "How Sweet It Is" is an album of cover versions from soul artists, including most of her influences (with a couple of "rock" covers thrown in). Marvin Gaye , Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Edwin Starr, Jimi Hendrix, Sly & The Family Stone, Aretha Franklin, Dave Mason and The Band are some of the origninal artists. Smooth and laid back is a good description of the style of this album. She doesn't try to copy or sound like the original artist but more like she is giving homage while adding her own voice and interpetation. She is a white girl with a voice made for R&B and Soul. It is well recorded and a good listen.

Found this at the used cd store the other day. It's the original MSFL disc. What some people get rid of is amazing sometimes. This recording got a lot play when I was growing up. Amazingly, this is one I haven't had in my collection. Classic Elton John, one of his best IMO.

^^ I'm a fan of Joan as well. She grew up very fast...

"You better get back, Honky Cat, livin' in the city isn't where it's at..."
Played the **** out of that in college...

Me this AM? Paula Cole - This Fire

Used CD shop purchase for "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone". Just threw it in expecting full disk of pleasant, background fluff in the same vein...
But no-o-o-o-o-o...

In the opening of the first track, "Tiger", she reached out, grabbed me by the balls and said, "Sit down and listen." I still am...

Bit over produced in spots, but the lady has some serious pipes, and more than a little writing talent. AMG says jazz training, and it shows in spots.

Nice to be pleasantly surprised every once in a while...

EDIT:... and again by the same disk... Last track is "I Don't Want to Wait"... Did not even know this was her. Just a cherry on top...

Ike & Tina Turner - Outta Season
1969 Blue Thumb, Reel to Reel
Ike Turner is a fantastic blues guitarist, and this offering showcases his talents in the genre better than any in my collection. Nothing original to be found here in the way of songwriting -- these are all covers of blues and soul standards. But, there are amazing covers of "Five Long Years", "Rock Me Baby", "Reconsider Baby", and "3 O'Clock in the Morning Blues". Tina does a respectable job with the (predominantly) blues cuts and lets it all hang out on "I've Been Loving You Too Long" and "I Am a Motherless Child". There's a subtle call and return between the couple on "Grumbling" that I never knew was there until I heard it in true analog.

Mike, I've only got 6 or so, just to balance you out...

I've been all over today... Duane Allman, Junior Brown, but the best stops of the day have been:

Steve Miller - Sailor
First off I have to say that this LP is an acquired taste. This ain't no Joker. This is the old, Steve from back when Boz Scaggs was his #1 sideman. This is the Bluesy, psychadelic Steve. Some of this is just abnormal stuff. Some of it is just brilliant stuff. But from the opening fog horns of "Song for Our Ancestors", it's all in a context that I think works. And then of course there's the quintessential Steve Miller track, "Living in the U.S.A."...

"Somebody get me a cheeseburger..."

Robert Palmer - Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley
This, Palmer's debut LP, is a guaranteed good... no, make that... great stop in any daily musical journey. First half of the CD (LP side 1) is always high on my "Best Album-side" list. If you've not heard Robert P. before he was "adicted to love", then you have not heard Robert P.

And the NOW PLAYING...

Bruce Hornsby - Hot House
The "That's Just the Way It Is" guy completes his move from rock to jazz with this '95 release. Really nice, energetic set with a strong backing band and plenty of guests dropping in here and there, e.g., Bella Fleck, Chaka Khan. It was my main "office inspiration" music near the end of my working days... right at the end nothing could inspire me. Anyway it got packed away in the move bye-bye, and was just happened across.

Reaching back again for a Classic from the 80's synthpop scene. Damn, the parties I went to where this was playing.

YAZ- Upstairs At Eric's AKA-Yazoo.

A british duo of Vince Clark from Depeche Mode and Allison Moyet (Alf as she is affectionally known). If you only own 1 piece of music from this wide varying genere this is it. Vince Clarks mastery of the syth and Alf's unusual bluesy vocals make this a solid and extremely infectious upbeat cd that sounds fresher today than when it came out. This was well ahead of its time. When groups like The Smiths, The Cure and to some extent early Depeche Mode were focusing on darker moods, lyrics and melodies, Yaz had a lot more energy and, despite only 2 performers, a bit more complexity. I'm still amazed how well most of the songs still hold up today, 24 years later. Allison Moyet has a very unique voice and this is worth seeking out.

Robert Plant-Principle of Moments

I forgot how truely enjoyable this cd is. His 2nd solo effort is throughly more enjoyable and exciting than his first solo which was pretty good considering trying to make a career after Zeppelin. The song writing on Principle of Moments is a bit more abstract and his vocal meanderings hint at a fresh new vocal style since his patented Zep wails are no longer available to him. The recording is suprisingly articulate and open if perhaps just a bit on the edgey side in the upper frequencies.

I have been listening to Stanley Clarke & Friends-Live at the Greek w/ Larry Carlton; Billy Cobham; Najee and Deron Johnson. It's simply fantastic, not to mention an excellent live recording. A must have, IMO

Right now listening to Heather Nova-Wonderlust. Melodic, dreamy 90's indie rock that's a pleasure to listen to. She may not appeal to everyone but this live cd is in many ways more consistent than her studio work which makes it very satisfying. Much like Ani Difranco, who I also like, her live cd is much more consistent. These are great live performers who need the interaction with an audience to sometimes pull off what they are trying to do.

Kenny Burrell - Recapitulation
Chess Jazz Masters Series GCH 2-6034, LP

This 2-LP set captures Kenny's rise to critical and fan acclaim in the early to mid-60's. The list of players who have borrowed and built on his riffs is seemingly endless, but I've heard none of them that can meld perfectly with a time signature and still maintain breathtaking attack in their play as he does.

It's story telling in music, which Robertson is good at,
as proven with his songwriting. It features

You'll hear songs performed in English, Cherokee
and other American Indian Dialects. It will be be Indian

and Indian and some not.

The album come with a book containing words, photos

The Buddy Rich Big Band - Big Swing Face
Pacific Jazz LP ST-20117, 1967

I found this in my record vault, unopened! I'm sure I bought it near the release date. Why I never opened and played it will remain a mystery.

Excellent live gig at The Chez, Hollywood, CA. Sound quality to die for.

For those of you who aren't familiar with Buddy, he was the last survivor of the swing era drummers (including Chick Webb, Big Sid Catlett, Dave Tough, Jo Jones, etc) and arguably the best at fusing jazz, swing and rock. I grew up in the 60's listening to Buddy. He was a frequent performer on TV shows of the era with a personality as expansive and unique as his musical talent and he toured with Sinatra for decades. When I play guitar unaccompanied, it's always Buddy's sound I keep mental time with.

I'm in heaven. I found buried treasure today. :)

Martin Zellar & the Gear Daddies - Can't Have Nothin' Nice
1997 - Steve's Pizza Music GDA0001

Nothing really special. Just good tunes from Martin and his long-time buddies that make up the band. Martin sings from the heart and writes songs about real life you can relate to. Over the years I have travelled to see his shows, with his bands the Gear Daddies and The Hardaways, and one-man acoustic, across the midwest. One of those guys that appreciates his fans, waves when he sees our group show up, comes with his family to chat with his fans, and remembers his fans names. If you go to a hockey game and they play "I want to drive the Zamboni", he wrote that. When he launches into a Neil Diamond song, just shut your eyes and Neil is singing in front of you. He has been officially recognized by Neil Diamond as one of the best tribute artists and does officially sanctioned tribute shows. Real music for real people, like I said nothing special, however I like it :)

He records in Austin MN and Minneapolis, and he puts a lot of effort into the sound quality of his CD's. He may not have a big budget and contract, however the personal touch results in pretty good sound quality and mix. If you want some fun music to brighten up your day, give it a try.

Excellent, Excellent stuff. I love Buddy Rich and Max Roach and I'm not even a big band music lover. These two drummers and their respective bands made timeless music. What a treat to find BlueMD. If you ever run across a copy of Buddy Rich & Max Roach-Rich vs. Roach. I highly recommend you pick it up (maybe you already have it) but it's basically these two drummers going head to head in each song, absolutely jaw dropping drumming. You can see where many modern drummers, especially John Bonham got their influence. In fact becasue of this post I'm listening to Rich vs. Roach right now while drinking my morning java. I'll try to find a copy of it, thanks for the tip. The favorite Max Roach in my collection is "Bitter Sweet". Max is the essence of a modern jazz drummer to me. Impeccable timing and taste.

Buddy's style, to me, was "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got the swing." Krupa once said Buddy was the best drummer to ever draw breath. I'd have to agree. He played like he lived -- smiling, scowling, in your face, always with a rare sparkle in the eye and razor sharp wit and wisdom.

IMO, one of the great underated guitarists. He has always marched to the beat of his own drummer. A brilliant guitarist who is not afraid to experiment. I always enjoy listening to him wether it be classic Beck or the latest Beck. Some of his newer stuff is out there, but it's so different.

Jeff Beck: Live at BB King Blues Club
New "official bootleg" album available now

On September 10th and 11th, 2003 Rock'N'Roll guitar icon Jeff Beck made a stop in New York City for two intimate and rare shows at B.B. King Blues Club. Jeff was joined on stage with long time collaborators and touring mates drummer Terry Bozzio and keyboard player Tony Hymas. The audience included legendary guitarist Les Paul, David Letterman Show music director Paul Schaffer, tennis champion John McEnroe and members of rock band Living Colour.

Epic Records commemorates this special event with an online only CD release that features music from Jeff Beck's most recent album Jeff, "Freeway Jam" from Jeff's classic Blow By Blow, Jazz great Charles Mingus' song "Goodbye Pork Pie," and a cover of the Beatles "A Day In The Life" with an audience member strumming the final note on Jeff's guitar to name a few.

I had forgotten how good this album really is. It got a bad rap as "Light Adult Contemporary" or "Pop music". That's too bad....this is a really good band, Hornsby is a fine piano player and this is an album worth listening to.+3... on vinyl here.

Today I cued up:

Muddy Waters: The Anthology: 1947-1972- Disc 1

Some amazing SQ considering the age of some of the tracks.

Will save disc 2 for another day as I've been craving "Live" lately. Ran through the usual suspects already, e.g., Lou Reed, Pat Travers, etc., but was in the moo for something new. So I just cracked:

The Kinks : The Kinks LIVE - The Road

Per allmusic this was recorded during their decline and that their 1980, live release, One for the Road, is the one to own. Think I'll pick up the latter, but I kinda like the one spinnin' now. It has lesser known material, nice SQ and enough energy to make me think that never having seen them live, I missed something... Seems like Ray Davies' element.

This DVD is excellent. Just Sinead and group of great musicians on stage. She does a handful of traditional Irish songs along with many of her hits and semi-hits. Despite what you may think of all the contraversey surrounding her which most likely killed her career, she is genuinely talented and has an amazing/unique voice. This is a straight forward video that really shows off her unique talent. This is not in heavy rotation as for me I have to be in the right mood to enjoy it fully.

From last night...

Decades ago, a now departed, local, rock music critic, Bob Claypool, did a series of columns on his true loves, Jazz and Blues. Plucked this little number from the former...
Erroll Garner - Concert by the Sea

Erroll was for many the consumate jazz pianist, and for many this is the finest of his 50-odd releases. Just straight trio, piano, bass and drums. And straight instrumental, unless you count Erroll's near constant, low gutteral accompaniment, which can only be described as a cross between a hum and a groan. But while you might think it would detract from the recording, just the opposite is the case.

Wonderful stuff and the sound of the remastered 1955, live performance is the equal of the performance.

This AM....
Robben Ford & The Blue Line - The Authorized Bootleg

Blind buy based on a review I read while paging through BMG's somewhat anemic Blues section. The review (from AMG) basically said he is a guitar player's guitar player.... and he's defintely got guitar-game. Put it on as morning background, but his play made me sit up and pay attention. SQ and mix is quite good, but volume level does seem to drift a bit here and there.

I wish all my blind buys were as good as this....

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - In Step

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000ICN9.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

This is the one that got my Stevie Ray Vaughan groove on. I remember seeing Stevie on Austin City Limits in 1989 and was simply blown away (my first exposure to his music). He played several cuts from this album. I went out and bought it the NEXT DAY! I have since collected the entire catalog including the DVD with this ACL performance. As much as I like his hard driving blues....my favorite track is the laid back, smooth, "Riviera Paradise". As a total package, In Step may be the best of all the albums...not as raw and hard as Texas Flood...but great writing and great musicianship from beginning to end. He had cleaned up and quit using drugs by this time and his playing may have been the pinnacle of his career on this album. Sadly he died before another album could be made (The Sky Is Crying was studio outtakes). My first SRV was his last. I love this album.

Tori Amos-Little EarthQuakes

This is Tori's debut album and it's excellent. Tori helped carve the female singer/songwriter movement of the 90's. Intimate, emotional lyrics with delicate prog rock piano and a voice to match, this is powerful stuff. Little Earthquakes is the most accessible work in Amos' catalog, it's also the most rewarding.
