Warren Zevon - The Wind
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000AGWIK.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
This album isn't for everyone. It is for the fans of Warren Zevon. If you don't know the background many would listen to HIS vocals on this album and think "this guy sounds like death"...and you would be right. He was diagnosed with an incurable lung cancer before he started this album and he recorded it knowing it would be his last. There is something erie and powerful about a man facing death singing "Knocking On Heaven's Door". If you know his musical history you immdeiately recognize many of the greats who he helped throughout his careers joining him in tribute. You would swear you were listening to a 70's Jacksone Brown album when David Lindleys guitar solos start on "Numb As A Statue" and Joe Walsh's slide is immediately recognizable on "Rub Me Raw". Emmylou Harris' distincitve harmony is readily apparent on "Please Stay" as is Timothy B. Schmit on "She's Too Good For Me". Throw in a few more "guest vocalists" like Jackson Browne, T-Bone Burnett, Tom Petty, Tommy Shaw, Bruce Springsteen, John Waite, Don Henley, Dwight Yoakam as well as a host of great musicians, you have an album that is a composite of Zevon's musical influlences over the past 35 years or so. The album doesn't really focus on the fact that Zevon is dying, but the final cut "Keep Me In Your Heart For Awhile" is his good-bye...and very touching.
This album wasn't made for money or for the charts but it is a musician doing what he loved....one last time....with the people who he influenced and who influenced him. If you are a fan of Warren Zevon you NEED to have this album. If not a fan....it is certainly worth a listen if for no other reason to hear the group of great musicians who were.

99% of the folks on this forum would have absolutely no use for this CD (in fact I'm probably the 1%). That's OK. I'm a sucker for Southern women....and I like the music. I tend to stare at the album cover as I listen which enhances the "experience".

Albert King - I Wanna Get Funky
Stax 1974, CD
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000000ZJF.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Arguably his last great studio album, he does just what the title sets out to do. His tone is amazing with no sense of attack. It's like he has a bagpipe full of wildcat growl and is squeezing it out.
The rendition of his "Crosscut Saw" on this album is solidly in the top 10 of my blues favorites. It begins with a Memphis soul vibe and a new backbeat that instantly grabs you. Half way through the jam he urges the band to "do it like we did back in 1965" and they seamlessly change the beat to that of the original recording (and every cover I've ever heard) for a few measures. Then he yells "I wanna go back to the top" and, without missing a beat he has your ass shaking again and your foot tapping smoothly back in the funk.
As the man often said himself: "If the blues don't grab you, you got a hole in your soul." Grab this one for your collection and never look back.

One of Albert's most listenable albums. It really showcases his guitar and vocal stylings in an excellently produced, 9-cut session. Jimmy McGriff keeps the funk anchored with tastey B-3 runs and fills. Solid!

Albert Collins - Don't Lose Your Cool
1983, Alligator ALCD4730
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000009XW.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Hands down my favorite of Albert's four Alligator works. He grabs his Texas juke joint roots and blends them with the Kansas City blues sound he mastered in the mid-60's and West Coast funk.
The SQ of this album is stellar and allows his unique guitar tuning and non-standard blues riffs to leap out at you. Abb Locke and Dino Spells weave tenor and alto sax wonderfully into these fine arrangements. Larry Burton's rhythm guitar work is the perfect compliment to the Ice Man's lead.

I was fortunate enough to catch Buddy live at the old Checkerboard Club in South Chicago at about the time this album was cut. I was blown completely away. And, this album brings back all the memories of his intensity on the guitar, his bawling vocals tinged with a trailing sweetness, and his utter COMMAND of the blues.
There are no big name guest artists or fancy arrangements in this tight, six cut studio set recorded in France. Just Buddy's touring band of the era which included his brother Phil on guitar, bassist J.W. Williams, and drummer Ray Allison. He's done an amazing body of work in the nearly 30 years that have passed. But, I still want to hear him just go stone crazy again like this.

The son of the late blues great Jimmy Rogers credits Jimi Hendrix, rather than Dad, for his interest in the guitar--and it shows in his music. It took me awhile to warm up to this album. His vocals are uneven and lacking passion on some cuts and I guess I was expecting a blues album with a title like this and Dad backing on a couple of cuts.
On about my fourth pass through the album this morning I quit listening for what I expected and focused on the guitar work. It's the closest thing to SRV and Hendrix out there ("In This Bed" and "Four O'Clock in the Morning") since their deaths.
It's somewhat odd that these tracks, recorded in 1997, weren't released until 2000. Especially since they represent some of the last work that Jimmy Rogers, Hubert Sumlin, and Sam Lay did together before Roger's death.

This session, recorded in August 1971, sat forgotten in the master tape archives of Stax for 15 years before being accidentally rediscovered by Bill Belmont of Fantasy Records.
Recorded at Wolfman Jack's studio, and produced by John Mayall, it apparently didn't "fit" into Stax marketing structure of the era. Mayall put together what would later become the lineup for his Jazz Blues Fusion group and co-wrote all the songs with King pretty much on-the-fly. John remembers that he purposely arranged the music in keys other than King's standard flats to "keep him from cliches." The results were magical.

Another really great album. This should be in eveyone's collection. A three-way fusion of Mississippi Delta blues, British blues, and Los Angeles jazz. The whole idea was to get Albert away from the Stax sound that was so popular at that time. Very experimental as far as King goes and in my mind very successful. Not everyon'es cup of tea, but it's nice to hear King play a bit different than his usual style.

A lot of King's work featured a Memphis style horns section. This album shines for the fusion timings and fantastic sax and trumpet solos in the arrangements.

Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive! [LIVE]
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002GL4.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Double LP.
It has been 25+ years since this LP has been out of the sleeves. I had forgotten how good of a live album it is. It was the best selling live album of it's time (and may still be). I sorta had it in the back of my mind that it was more teenybopper fluff than rock (big hair teen idol and all). I WAS MISTAKEN! 30 years after the fact the music still holds up well. The ex Humble Pie guitarist can flat out rock. He was definitely in his element in concert. " Do You Feel Like We Do?" is the last cut on the album and is probably best known for his use of the "voicebox" but it really displays his guitar playing talent. "Frampton Comes Alive" will certainly get played again before another 25 years rolls around.
PS: I understand there was an A&M remastered CD iissued in 99 that is excellent and also a MFSL gold disc that is even better.

Very enjoybale semi prog/jam rock. If you enjoy great musicianship this a great cd to kick back and listen to. Extended jams that just flat out groove. At times it's chill inducing how the jams are played.
Recorded and filmed during the 2003 Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans, the show features the most astonishing array of guest bassists yet, and so many other guests the date was like a festival unto itself. Among the bassists preset for a night of music that began at 10:10 p.m. and ended at 3:35 a.m. were Jack Casady, Les Claypool, Roger Glover, Will Lee, Jason Newsted, Rob Wasserman, Victor Wooten, George Porter, Jr., Conrad Lozano, and a half-dozen others. Other musicians participating in the festivities -- many of whom who had gigs in the Crescent City at the same time -- include David Hidalgo, Bernie Worrell, Fred Wesley, Karl Denson, Sonny Landreth, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band horns, Béla Fleck, and Ivan Neville.
The sound is warm and the mix very fluid, very live. The performance is completely inspired and jaw-droppingly sophisticated despite its spontaneity. There are 20 tracks over the pair of CDs, accounting for two hours and 34 minutes total playing time, and the DVD features 20 more and lasts over three hours.
Great Sunday morning listening

Evanescence-Anywhere But Home
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drg500/g521/g52181gvfdo.jpg
Switching gears today. This is as aggressive as the Gov't Mule was laid back. Crunching guitars, slamming bass line, and the Goth tinged voice of Amy Lee; who makes Evanescence unique. Sure they are little bit, Tool, Linkin' Park meets Tori Amos, but that's what I like about them. The rythms are smart and the drumming is above average......and did I mention Amy Lee's vocals. Nice bit of contrast to many of the songs by using swelling keyboards to good effect. Slightly haunting, but the crunchy guitars are awesome. Recorded pretty well also.
Home also reasserts Amy Lee's position at Evanescence's center. Throughout the band's rise, there was the drama -- co-founder Ben Moody's contentious departure, the are-they-or-aren't-they Christian rock debates -- but there was always the singular force of Lee, whose powerful vocals, strident public persona, and striking fashion sense broke down the doors of the alternative metal boys club. Appropriately, Lee is the star of Anywhere but Home. Her voice has an impressively raw quality live, and her banter with the fawning Parisian crowd is always engaging. The mix also favors her (as well as the prominent use of keys/synthesizers), which unfortunately lessens the effect of John LeCompt and Terry Balsamo's guitars and Rocky Gray's impressive drumming. Still, "Going Under" surges nicely into its anthemic chorus, and when the guitars do show up (like on "Everybody's Fool"), Lee matches their power easily. She takes a softer approach for the arch piano ballad "My Immortal," which becomes a singalong moment for 5,000 souls, and that song leads nicely into an extended vocal intro for the breakthrough hit (and Home standout) "Bring Me to Life." (Evanescence's cover of Korn's "Thoughtless" will be another fan highlight.) The album closes, as does Fallen, with the swirling, vaguely Eastern-tinged metal melodies of "Whisper," and Lee's throaty vocal endures even as the synths and processed choir effects threaten to engulf her.
Forgot how enjoyable this is, especially when the mood fits.

Refuge from the heat seems to be the phrase of the day around the middle section of the country. Look out east, it's coming. I played 18 holes of golf yesterday it was over 90 w/ a heat index close to 100 and today it's even hotter. I'm enjoying the day in air condtioned comfort just rediscovering some dusty recordings.

INXS-Welcome to Wherever You Are
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc400/c472/c47267ds203.jpg
The last of the best. Mostly experimental as they are trying to find an audience as there sound hadn't changed much since the beginning, but the music scene had. As much as I like the early stuff and of course Kick. This is easily the most enjoyable and overlooked album they put out. They are stretching and experimenting on this one. Once again it proves JD can't even come close to filling Hutchence's shoes. This has been in the bargain bin for years, I bought it for $2.99 several years ago. What a bargain!

PS: I understand there was an A&M remastered CD iissued in 99 that is excellent and also a MFSL gold disc that is even better.
agreed 100% growing up in the 70's... this was THE album to listen to. Yes there were other good albums out.. but they weren't live and did't offer the same clear fidelity that this one did. I just picked it up on DVD-audio.
It's sweet. one of the top ten best albums of all time for sure. ;)

Chain Gang of Love
This is a Danish duo that borrows heavily from early Motown, the infamous Specter Wall of Sound, '50's themes such as hot rods, riding with the pack, juvenile delinquency, etc.
All with enough feedback and distortion to choke a mule.

At 73, John shows no sign of slowing down. It just gets better and better. Buddy opened the show with an ass bumpin' cover of "Shakey Ground". They're headed back to the studio next week to continue work on a Freddie King tribute album, due to release early '07. Can't wait!

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000002O4B.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Before the Hawaiian Shirts, beach balls, parrotheads, ect... His first live concert album. An absoulutely great version of "God's Own Drunk" along with all the classics from his early albums.
The album title is "You had to be there".....and the cool thing is....
I WAS! The Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA on August 9, 1978. A little college graduation present to myself. It was the first of many Jimmy Buffett concerts I've attended (with more to come). Like much of my LP collection, these two LPs have not been out of the sleeves in probably 15 years. It's an album for it's time with lots of references to things such as pot and cocaine that you would never hear in his concerts today (which is probably for the best). A good album with better memories (at least the stuff I can remember is good).

Was '78 Buffet's "broken leg" tour? I saw him Fall of '78 in Austin in UT's "Superdrum". Worst seats I've ever had for a concert (high balcony virtually even with the front of the stage), yet he was able to make me feel like he was performing just for me. Put this in last night...It's been about a year since I listened to it. I remeber when it first came out I thought it was a cut above all the other "teen" artists of the time (2001). I still do. Good music and the kid has some talent. Her next release (Hotel Paper - 2003) was fair but not as good and there has been nothing since. That's too bad. Maybe she has been spending too much time being "hot"... ;)

The Libertines -- The Libertines
If you can look past all the tabloid antics of co-founder Pete Doherty, you'll find that him and Carl Barat have released two of the most startling and creative rock albums in decades. And forget what MTV, Spin, and Rolling Stone have tried to pass off as "punk" in recent memory, as this is probably the only truly punk offering to crack the mainstream in over a decade.
Though most critics are in unision when praising their first album Up the Bracket, I find this sophomore (and probably last) effort, to be their most fascinating, moving, involving, and energetic. Mick Jones from the Clash produced it and it seems his only purpose was to get the album recorded before Barat and Doherty imploded. And it shows... this album is absolutely RAW -- lyrically and musically. Extremely self-aware and brewing with immediacy. Very rarely do I find an album which absolutely exposes those who create it, but to hear Barat sing about what could have been, while Doherty harmonizes with apologies is powerful stuff.
This could have been one of the greatest rock bands of all time. But it seems they'll be resigned to footnote status.

Dayna Manning-Volume 1
Canadian native Dayna Manning admits to being influenced by a large assortment of artists, such as Joni Mitchell, Tool, and Rage Against the Machine, among others. Manning's own music probably slips into what is considered pop/rock, but many of her tunes carry hints of alternative, folk, and roots rock. Her debut album was recorded in 1997 when she was 18 years old.
While some would call her a Canadian Jewel, Dayna Manning is attempting to come of age as an individual in this present world of female singer/songwriters, and with Volume One, she succeeds handsomely. A fine variety of song styles weaves a tempting web throughout this disc -- from the folkie tint of "Half a Man," awhere she recalls the late Sandy Denny, to the rocking "My Addiction," where she describes her man as just that, to "My Kind," a fine song made even finer by the help of Sean Lennon on guitar, bass and organ. With twelve original songs from a fresh young talent, Volume One is highly recommended.
She has a very unique voice and she was part of the Lillith Fair festival in 1997. Unfortunaetly this CD is now out-of-print and can sometimes be found in the used bins. A truely outstanding effort and I wish she would have pursued her musical career and put out another cd. This is another one of my ever increasing "desert island" cds.

George Szell/Cleveland Orchestra-"Orchestral highlights from the Ring of the Nibelungs". If this doesn't grab you by the short and curlies (even the non-classical listeners) i'd be suprised. "Giant" sound to clear and defined subtle strings, triangles and brass.

You're bringing this to Troy's, I trust...
George was the last, and possibly the greatest, of the old-school, dictatorial Conductors. In the 60's the Cleveland SO, which was held by many to be the finest in the world at the time, tried to go union.... George told them they could not... and they didn't.
Me? I've been visiting with Mrssrs. Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000002AI2.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V65929393_.jpg
I believe Tour recommended this one to me. It is a very good album, but I wish it had included more pre "Silk Degrees" material. The R&B cuts from his early albums are excellent. I guess it just means I have to buy those albums to see if the entirity is as good as the sampling on this compilation. That said, this 2 CD set certainly shows how Scaggs morphed his style over time all the while retaining his R&B roots. If you want a good "taste" of Boz Scaggs...this is the ticket. Be careful though...it may leave you wanting more.

Yup... that would be me. Prolly from the old RnR Rem days...
Agree on early Boz releases being the best, e.g., S/T, Moments, Boz Scaggs and Band, and My Time. But the compilation has a good amount of these including "Loan Me a Dime" which is worth the price of admission alone...

Listening to an excellent Gershwin collection (http://www.towerrecords.com/product.aspx?pfid=2686583) that I discovered recently from a rather unexpected source: a British pianist playing and conducting a provincial Danish orchestra I'd never heard before. Fully in tune with Gershwin's jazz-influenced rhythms and melodies and given very good sound.

I really like the music. Her voice is taking a while to get used to. I think it is growing on me. This is my first foray into her music. I understand this album is more "pop" than some of her earlier work which was condisidered "indie-rock" and very angry and edgy. I never cared for that genre so this version of Liz Phair may be more to my liking.

Speaking of MMJ, did you catch One Big Holiday playing during the pre-game show spotlighting the Chargers? Kind of interesting....
When they were playing smaller clubs and venues supporting At Dawn and Tennesse Fire... they always opened with this song. It was great because outside of bootlegs, it was the only way to hear it. I always associate it with the beginnings of a great show... so much energy. Now they tend to play it closer to the end of a set.

Thanks! I just noticed that that Lou Reed album was in my 'want to buy' CD list, due to recommendations I'd read about in other threads...then it turns out that album happened to be one of the tapes I just bought! How neat. It actually turns out a lot of those tapes were on my 'want to buy' list.
I enjoyed that tape, though you could tell the previous owner liked it and played it a lot, too.
How do you get the full picture to post rather than the thumbnail???

its a must see. I saw him 9/6. he plays old Floyd and entire dark side of moon.
he connects with his audience, great sound tight band.
The dvd Roger waters In The Flesh is great also.
Gilmour Pink Floyd shows are good too but he does not seem to enjoy himself playing much as Roger does.

Grand Funk - We're An American Band
This is a 2002 Capital Records remastered CD that I found at the now-defunk Tower Records in Schaumburg IL. Excellent sound quality and remastering! The bonus tracks are also really nice, with an awesome acoustic version of "Stop Looking Back". The back of the CD says all tracks are 24 bit digitally remastered. Someone did a nice job on this one! Highly recommended.
