Does anyone know of a good quality CD with the complete 5th symphony? I am also interested in good quality versions of the 7th and 9th.
Thanks,
Graham

My info is a little dated, as I amassed most of my classical collection over ten years ago, but here goes...

One of the most economical ways to own all the symphonies is in the set ercorded by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin S.O. on Deutsche Grammophon (DG 415 066-2).

For the 5th and 7th alone, the ones in the above set are excellent and they are available individually as well (DG 415 861-2 and DG 415 121-2 respectively).

The 9th in the above box is not to the level of the other works. Of modern recordings von Dohnanyi's with the Cleveland Orchestra (Telarc CD-80120) is a worthy supplement to the boxed set.

I think I'm going to pick it up too. I have several pieces on compilations taken from the 5th Symphony and love the music. I love to listen to the Intro to Symphony No. 5 really loud to room shaking levels. So much power and passion in a single song.

I was watching a special on TV about Beethoven's music and they showed a large orchestra playing pieces from the 5th Sym.

I'll be getting a violin pretty soon so I can play some of my favorite pieces. I was in the orchestra in middle school. We kicked all the other school's ass coming in 1st everytime except for one 2nd. Can't remember how to read notes but still remember the fingering and bow techniques.

Graham, outstanding rather than just good is the coupling of the 5th and 7th by Carlos Kleiber and the Vienna Philharmonic on Deutsche Grammophon DGG 447 400.

On the 9th, I prefer Solti's earlier version with the Chicago Symphony on London LON 430 438.

Both are discs of great performances, available at bargain prices.

The 5th and 7th by Christoph Von Dohnanyi with the Cleveland Orchestra (Telarc CD-80163) is also very good.

Tour - I have not heard Von Dohnanyi's 9th. For the 9th, I have Roger Norrington with the Schutz Choir of London and the London Classical Players (EMI: 100467). It is quite good but as much as I like Dohnanyi's 5th and 7th I may have to pick up a copy of his 9th.
