Oldie but goodie when I was growing up, the movie that launched a lot of now famous actors, "The Outsiders."

"Do it for Johnny."

Grimster,

While Ronin had a VERY good car chase scene, and I'd place it strong in the top 5 of all time...

#1 spot can only be claimed by one movie:

Bullitt (1968)

"A dark green '68 Mustang 390 GT Fastback. An inky black '68 Dodge Charger R/T. San Francisco. Steve McQueen. For nine minutes and 12 seconds of film, not a word is spoken."

Cheers,

Russman,

I totally agree and was thinking the same thing after the original post about Ronin.

Bullitt has been on cable up this way recently and I have revisited the chase seen a few times recently ... It's still as superb as I remembered it.

woodyjacobs

I can't do one...but maybe a top 5.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
American Beauty
Tombstone
Local Hero
Band of Brothers (if you can it as one)

Oh crap, how can I leave out Raising Arizona (IMO the most quotable movie ever), Snatch and Clerks? oy

Spoonman
03-01-2004, 03:09 PM
I agree too Russman.

Bullitt is the template for all other car chase scenes.

A dark green '68 Mustang 390 GT FastbackMan, I'd love to have that car or one like it. That is one cool automobile!

That's a tough one to answer. Story wise, the LOTR trilogy takes it. It's an epic story done in epic proportions! It's just an incredible movie!

As far as overall story, acting and cinematography(sp?) goes, I'm going to have to say Ronin. That move is just so faceted and complex beyond the fairly simple to follow plot line. The character development is deep and subtle and by the end of the movie, you have every character and what motivates them figured out. The cinematography is done in a classic style but with obviously a modern flare. The international espionage theme is done perfectly and the sound effects, while mundane, everyday sounds, are perfectly set in the movie. On top of that, the acting was first rate! Robert Deniro and what is probably his closest clone in the French Cinema, Jean Reno are a superb pair of actors who tied the whole thing together. There were parts in the movie where neither of them said a word to each other but spoke volumes about the situation.

Also, you'll recognize a few of the faces in Ronin from other flicks like Sean Bean who player Boromir in the LOTR and the stunning Natascha McElhone who was also in another pair of great flicks, The Devil's Own and The Truman Show. Also, check out Stellan Skarsgård who was the MIT teacher in another excellent flick Good Will Hunting who discovered Will Hunting solving math problems while mopping floors. He was also in Amistad, Insomnia and The Hunt For Red October, all excellent flicks! Also, Skipp Sudduth who gained a fair amount of fame in the movie Clockers and has a laundry list of notable yet unremembered parts. One more acting talent to point out, you'll like this one! You might remember Jonathan Pryce in one of his many faces! He has been in movies across the board from The Adventures of Baron Munchausen to a few Bond flicks all the way up to his most recent part in one of the best flicks of 2003, Pirates of the Carribean as the Govornor (Keira Knightley's character's father). So an all-star cast with a complex story and excellent cinematography and production, how could it not be the best if not one of the very best movies of all time?

Now an honorable mention, it's not the very best but it certainly is up there in the top 5 IMO, Pirates of the Carribean! Excellent story, excellent acting from all actors, awesome setting location, gorgeous props and incredible special effects! It was funny, it was sad, it was exciting, it had it all! Pure, 100% entertainment and I don't care what anyone says about Johnny Depp! He is one of the best acting talents of our time! Eventhough I know who he is and that he played Captain Jack Sparrow, every time I watch the movie, I'm not watching Johnny Depp playing Captain Jack Sparrow, I'm watching Captain Jack Sparrow...he was that convincing!

Now Russ, Bullitt is up there for car chases but overall, the movie was not McQueen's best. I'd rank The Getaway over Bullitt any day and it has a few prety decent chases in it. Hell, all of McQueen's movies had some sort of chase in them and that is one thing he always did well.

Lord of the Rings are the DUMBEST, STUPIDEST, GAYEST movies I've ever heard of.

Just my opinion, nothing against those who like it, so don't respond to this telling me I'm an idiot. I very well may be an idiot, but those movies suck.

I watched the first one, and shut it off before I got to the end. I never even bothered to rent the second one due to the first movies turd like quality.

Ya, so what? I watched probably 85% of the first movie, and it totally sucked. Making an educated guess that the second movie would be more of the same, I never bothered to watch it.

I did think it through, the first movie sucked. I'm sure MY OPINION of the second movie would be the same if I were to waste the $4.50 to rent it and the few hours to watch it.

Jstas
03-03-2004, 12:14 PM
Just curious, why do you think it sucked?

gmorris
03-03-2004, 01:06 PM
O.K. Maybe "sucked" is a little harsh. I simply didn't like that movie.

The reasons are as follows:

1) The plot is completely one dimensional. It boiled down to this little goof ball (Dildo or Fido or something?) going on a quest with his buddies. Nothing else important happens.

2) The "quest" theme is totaly reminiscent of early Nintendo video games. Now hold your horses, I know that the books these movies were based on were written a long time before Nintendo came along. The whole movie just has a very video game quality to it. I don't like that.

3) Too much of that movie is done on the computer. Too many computer generated scenes, characters, special effects, you name it. For me, all that computer animation is distracting, and I don't like it. (Star Wars episode I & II also fall into this "too much computer animation" category for me, but the plot is much better, so it isn't as distracting)

4) The biggest reason I didn' like LOTR: UTTERLY CONFUSING! I never read the books, and I had no fuggin' idea what was going on. It seemed to me that you need some prior knowledge to watch that movie. I just didn't get it.

Now, I am not stupid. I can understand why people like this movie so much. It is, as was said early, a great epic saga. The computer generated action scenes are super, but I just don't go for all that fake shit.

Jstas
03-03-2004, 01:16 PM
So you don't get the movie and you don't like computer animation so that means the movie sucks.

OK. That's what I thought.

gmorris
03-03-2004, 01:20 PM
What do you mean, that's what you thought?

I gave 4 detailed reasons why I didn't like the movie. I also see that you didn't mention my remarks about the shallow plot.

Did you like the movie? Why?

Jstas
03-03-2004, 01:52 PM
Who's hugh?

What shallow plot? How can you understand the plot if you haven't watched the whole movie? The plot goes well beyond the 1st movie too. It doesn't end until the 3rd movie. It's a continuing story broken up into 3 movies because no one was going to sit through 9-12 hours of a movie.

I agree with Russ. You said it sucked and that it was your own opinion and you posted that 3 times before you finally gave a reson behind your own opinion and it was exactly the reason I was expecting. Mainly because you didn't get the movie. That's fine but that doesn't mean it sucked. You can't read the first chapter of a book and judge the whole book by the first chapter.

I am not defending the movies. The 11 oscars it was nominated for and won speak for themselves. I'm just questioning your logic which is based on half-truths and incomplete information.

I liked the movies because I read the books. I don't think it copies video games, I think video games copied the books. The books are a work of genius. Tolkien created several different languages just for the book and managed to write many more books about the same subject than The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The plot is very thick and the overall plot of "The Quest" as you refer to it only serves to set the environment in which the story takes place. The books are one of my most favorite works of literature and I am pleased to see the movies done so well with as much attention to detail as the movie's constraints allowed.

Now, Revenge of the Nerds...talk about a shallow plot!

PolkWannabie
03-03-2004, 01:58 PM
Hey, you wanna talk about the action of a one dimensional dildo ... ROTN has it pretty well cornered.

gmorris
03-03-2004, 03:23 PM
Revenge of the Nerds is truely a cinematic master piece, but that is a different story...

As far as the 11 oscars are concerned, the "Academy" is the same organization that awarded Halle Berry an Oscar some years back for some turdy performance. I think any one will agree that she is not a true thespian. Anyway, what does an Oscar mean anyway? A bunch of Hollywood elitist kiss asses get together and give each other awards. So what?

Anyway, I'm sure everything you said is true. That still doesn't change that I didn't like it. If my 4 reasons don't satisfy you, that's OK too.

Every so often a movie comes along and everyone gets a boner over it. Remember Titanic? It won all sorts of silly awards. My opinion of that is TURD also. LOTR just happens to be 3 movies long, so the hoopla is carried out longer.

danger boy
03-03-2004, 03:43 PM
UGH! it's obvious gmorris had to think to hard to watch LOTR that's why he didn't like it. lets face it. he likes simple, mindless sophmoric comedies. plain and simple.

I had to watch LOTR a few times myself to better understand everything that was going on. i did not read the books myself. i do think the trilogy was top notch the way it was done. I can't imagine anything ever topping that within the next several years to come.

Opinions are opinions and then there are pointless and degrading commentaries that will offend others. Words like 'sucked' ect...aren't going to win you any friends or understanding.

Millions of people aren't morons who like a movie that sucks, as you put it.

You don't like it. Calling it stupid and gay is stupid in and of itself.

Not everyone is going to like the same movies as everyone else, and most people here realize that, but they also don't go out of their way to offend people because of their opinion on something so futile.

The LOTR trilogy was a masterpiece. No ifs ands or buts about it. Whether or not you like it is your perogotive. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean the movie can't be heralded for the masterpiece that it is.

Hello,
For a couple of WW I movies try, "Paths of Glory" directed by Stanley Kubrick, and "All Quiet on the Western Front". Also on VHS try "Wings" (it hasn't been released on DVD, yet). Another good one is "The Blue Max".
For a good musical try "Oliver" or "Cabaret" or "All That Jazz" with Roy Scheider.
A great WW II movie (Pacific Theater) is "They Were Expendable". There's lots of great WW II (Europe) movies, "Dirty Dozen", "Kelly's Heroes", "The Eagle Has Landed", "Patton", "The Longest Day", "A Bridge Too Far" and many others. Micah's a big fan of "The Guns of Navarone".

I don't want to re-kindle the fired debate over the LOTR movie. I will have to agree with those who believe that any movie winning Academy/Golden Globe Awards, etc. does not mean the movie is any "good". Personally, I thought the LOTR was an awesome flick, awards or not. But, BECAUSE it won awards, does that mean I or anyone else SHOULD like it? No. Does winning any award(s) increase my chances of liking it? Perhaps, perhaps not. Should saying "XYZ movie was GREAT!" really mean anything to anyone? Nah.

You can't argue personal opinions - case closed.

lol... Still haven't benn able to sit through Chicago...

Rear Window was 1954...
Mockingbird is a very good choice for pre-60 B&W... Gregory Peck at his best... except it was released in '62. ;)

a. Civil War - Never seen a good one. Looking forward to Cold Mountain. Thought God and Generals was God Awful. Haven't seen Gettysburg. Ken Burns Documentary was excellent, though.

FWIW IMO Cold Mountain is not a Civil War movie. It is a love story with the Civil War as a backdrop. The focus is the love story not the war. Good movie however, I enjoyed the heck out of it.

I would choose two movies. I choose them because they made me love movies.

First is the classic Dr. Doolittle with Rex Harrison. When I saw that film I said "wow big tv!" I was five or so.

The second one is Star Wars: A New Hope. When I saw that one I discoved 70mm Dolby Stereo. My dream has been to rock the house with the first Star Crusier blasting into my living room. September will be here soon.
