Choosing Sub Enclosure...help?

ok, im now looking to get an enclosure for my 2 12's. what should i be looking for? i mainly listen to rap, but i also like classic rock and jazz. what would be the best for these likings??? i have no idea, as of now im looking at a dual 12 bandpass. any ideas? thanks a lot,

what kind of subs do you have?
what amp do you have pushing them(rms rating and all that)?

Just my opinion but forget the bandpass. Too much trouble for an additional 3 db. T'aint worth it. I prefer the sealed box myself. Its just the best all around performer and has no real disadvantages. Its smaller so it wont take up as much room. It doesnt have much of a frequency response hump, it will allow the sub to handle more power and its easier to build.

just to confirm what a sealed box is, its the box where just the front of the subs are visible correct? and that also means that there are no ports? i have good wood working skills so building this kind of box should not be a problem. is there a certain amount of volume needed for a sealed box? thanks again.

You are correct sir. No ports. A ported box will give you a little more output at a certain frequency but usually below that tuned frequency the sub will act as if it is in free air and not perform well. A sub in a sealed box will generally perform quite linear over its response curve.

As far as proper box volume that depends on the sub. The Diamond Audio CM3 8" will work in a .27 where a Kicker Comp 8 takes a .42. Youre subs owners manual should tell you the recommended volume. If not tell us what kind of subs you have and maybe one of the other guys can enlighten ya.
