View Full Version : Thinking about taking the plunge - 03 Civic

I'm a Polk Enthusiast, surrounded by RTi100s, a CSi40, FXi5s and FXi50s at home in my office/theater... I've had such success with the Polks that I think I need them in one of my vehicles too...
I've got an 03 Civic EX that is the primary use vehicle... and am thinking of db6500s front and back. Has anyone used them in the Civic? Any thoughts? They're from Polk, so I know what to expect, but I'm a lot better at wiring stuff in the house, I've honestly never done anything in a car.
Also, Crutchfield's got the MM110 Polk/Momo SUb box for $144 with the package I'm putting together.
Am thinking of running the rear pair of db6500s off of the CDX-MP70 and the front pair and sub off of a Sony XM-4600GTX in 3-way mode. Toss the CDX-757MX 10-disc changer in the trunk next to the sub and I've spent a grand which is why I'm shying away form the second amp I know I'd rather have to drive the rears.
Any thoughts?
thanks...

What's another $300ish with the wiring. Now seriously considering adding XM-D400P5 to drive the sub leaving nothing off the face. So that makes it:
CDX-MP70 face
XM-4060GTX 60w x 4 driving:
db6500 pair front
db6500 pair rear deck
XM-D400P5 200W x 1 driving:
MM10 sub box
CDX-757MX 10-disc changer
3.7 nautical miles of cable
17lbs of crimping connectors
437 cable ties
Our friends at Crutchfield put that right at $1300 and change with free shipping. I'm a big Sony fan, and would not consider speakers other than Polk Audio. Is there perhaps a better set of amps at that price point maybe?
Thanks

You'll probably want a better amp for that sub. The mm10 asks for 500w rms, while that amp only puts out 200w @4ohms. It's also a 4 ohm, single voice coil sub, so it's gonna be 4ohms unless you get another sub. I don't know if you'll be able to find a good amp to run the mm10, for as cheap as that Sony. But, if you spend the extra money to get a better amp, you'll be happier. I'm sure some of the other guys will have some suggestions on amps.

The best deal on amps right now is at SoundDomain.com. Ive recommended these several times lately. Its Phoenix Golds Tantrum series. These are high end, competition level amps and SD has them at outrageous prices. They probably have an ass load of 2003 models theyre trying to clear out.
Check out the Tantrum 400.4. Its 50x4 and clean as a whistle for $200. There is also the 600.4 which is 75x4 for $230.
For subs look no further than the Tantrum 500.2. Its a 2 channel amp than when bridged will put out at least 500 rms to your sub and for only $200.
Now you can get the 400.4 and 500.2 for $400. Thats 2 competition level amps putting out some serious power for $400 and youre buying from a Phoenix Gold authorized dealer so the PG factory warranty will be good.
This is the best deal on amps I know of anywhere right now.

sony makes a lot of great things
car audio is not one of them
before they came out with the Xplod series, they were actually decent for the price, but now theyre over priced and underrated
i cant link any amps right now cuz im in a hurry, but i will later...

the amp that does it all... (http://www.acaraudio.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=46&products_id=1137)
the sub to go with it... (http://polkaudio.com/car/product.php?name=mm2084)
its a 5 channel amp
50x4 and 200x1
youll have to get a box for the sub though

$309 is compelling and that certainly makes the wiring easier... Everything is 4 ohm I take it. 50x4 and 200 is all I'm really looking for I guess. Hell, I can build a box with Polk's plans, I've got the necessary tools and MDF is cheap enough... Hmmm...

I just called my bookie to check the odds on me getting everything I need in the first set of orders. Basically if I bet $5.75 I'll recoup my entire speaker/amp/sub investment if I get it right...laugh. Txs y'all fer the help, Hook 'em Horns, and all of that.
