View Full Version : First "VENOM" Cables, done.
After spending roughly $40 in parts, Im proud to say that my first DIY cable project is now complete. As the header of this title suggests, I have dubbed them "venoms".
A few comments:
Cosmetically, they look OK. Not as good as I had hoped, the cool looking heat shrink wrap was too big, forcing me to settle with an un attractive solution.
These bullet plugs are TIGHT. Holy crap, I've never had to put so much effort just to squeeze a cable into some rca's.
I am in the process of burning them in now, so far, they arent as warm as the Audience cables, but more detailed. Here are some pics:

Those look cool ATC. Yeah I hate the "death grip" some of those rca plugs have. I much prefer the WBT type connections.
Man 1/4 inch shrink wrap is cheap. Get the right stuff for the job.
Those sure look like IXOS 6007 speaker wire. The purple color gives me a clue there.
Interesting and have fun demoing them against them conductors. Those look really nice for homemade ICs.

Paul,
What, you never have time to come on the messanger anymore?
Keen eyes, that is Ixos 6007 wire. The excellent thing about these Eichmann bullet plugs is how sturdy they are built. interchanging wire would be simple.

Looks great. Are they standed?

Those interconnects do look real nice. Nice work ...
I made a set too. I just cut the flex wrap a little long so it sticks into the end of the RCA plugs (for looks), but using shrink wrap on the ends is probably the best thing to do since all the store bought interconnects are like that.
Here is a set I made with Belden 98259

Gidrah,
Stranded? *stupid look on face*
Turb,
I Remember you showing those off awhile back. They look very nice. Ever have a chance to compare them to other cables out on the market?

No, I just hooked them up and let it go at that. The system does sound real good to my un-trained ears (ruined by years of flying military helicopters). I would think they sound as good as any.
I just made them for something to do. Saw a set that "Wardsweb" made. Liked the looks of them, so I just made an exact copy. Well, I think I used different cable than he did.
My compliments go to "Wardsweb" for the visual design.

I mean are they single strands or multiple strands/conductor?
Great job! Im currently in the process of building a set, ordered a set of rca plugs & braded sleve. How does multipul/stranded wire sound? I have been doing some read & seems there are guys who prefer .27 - .35 single strand silver as the center conductor as to stranded. I havnt got the wire yet Im still deciding what Id like to try. Is say 12 guage copper fine strands (1600 strands) better than fine strand 12 guage (600 strands)? Would that be over kill? Is it prefered to have the center smaller guage? Post a review of your ic's once you get a chance to break them in & listen!

Sean - Nice starter cable, start building them and trademark that Venom name, and you have a business.
EZC - If you start counting strands, you shouldn't be building your own IC's. DIY is for pure enjoyment, don't get crazy or you will ruin the whole idea and the feeling. Build and believe.
Mark,
Its tempting to say the least. The performance of them in my system is pretty freakin nice.

I'm very impressed with your solder job!

Venom what type cable and ends are you using? I have heard that Belden 89259 was an excellent type for interconnects. I recently got a quote from Belden on 25' of this cable was $33.75. Not bad I guess, if it is one of the better cabling for the buck. I know there's a lot of companies selling different grades of RCA ends and from what I've read WBT does it best. Any comments here? I started a string on this earlier and got a few replies. I like the looks of yours-and especially the name: 'Venom'.
Thanks,
Mitchell
Hbomb,
I would love nothing more than to take full credit for the soldering, but a lot of that credit goes to my father. The wire proved to be overly large for the bullet plug, making it difficult to get the wire into the small pin. I left it up to his expertise for those connections.
Mingram1234,
Thanks for your interest. I used Eichmann Bullet-plugs. They are simple, yet brilliantly designed RCA’s that deserve all the raving credit they have been given. Read more about it here:

I am not aware of where these can be purchased now. I used to get them from www.redcobracable.com, which has tragically shut down business. You could also purchase a decent variety of highly acclaimed Belden cable from there. Keep your eyes open for inventory he will be clearing out. Jason is a top notch fellow.
Call me bias, but I would use Eichmann bullet plugs, they are absolutely magnificent. They should range from 30-40 bucks a set.
