I'm looking for an inexpensive way to cool off my avr. It sits in a entertainment center with limited ventilation. I found one for $100 but I was wondering if anyone found a cheaper way that still does the job well.

If you are a DIY'er, try some Vantech Stealth fans. Extremely quiet and good cfm rating. I used these some time ago, just stuck Radio Shack rubber feet on them and set them on my amp. BINGO! Just search "Vantech Stealth" in yahoo, you'll get about a zillion hits for places to buy them...about $8.95 each. I attached a Radio Shack 500ma/12vDC walwart to run them.

I too am a fan of the Vantechs...use them for cooling around the PC...

so once you have the vantech, all you have to do is attach feet and a power supply? I don't really consider myself a DIYer but I can figure it out if it's simple.

I/m not using mine for the home audio setup...but I'd just plug into the switched outlet on the receiver so that it comes on with the receiver...

One question related to the cooling fan: does anyone have any idea on how to rig a trigger-controlled cooling fan? I am thinking of a small DIY project, consist of a vantech fan, walwart, and trigger wiring/components, to turn on/off in synch with an amp, without using a switched outlet...TIA guys!

I don't bud, but what I did was attach the walwart to my Middle Atlantic PDU, which has an on/off switch. All of my components are plugged into the MA PDU, so when I power-up, the fans come on automatically.

PBC74: What you'll need to do is cut off the "yellow" wire and only use the red and black wire. Splce those to the RS walwart, and BAM...12vDC ready to go. Just check with the specific Vantech you're going with to see how many milliamps you'll need.

NOTE: Its better to have the fan drawing hot air OUT then blowing air in. In other words, mount the fan so it is "exhausting" hot air, especially if your component draws air in from the bottom. This allows fresh air to flow thru the heat sinks.

I use this fan from Radio Shack (http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=273-241) it does a great job. I have it wired through the AVR. I agree with Steve, use the fan to exhaust air and remove the heat, not just blow it around.

I bought a couple of these:

Papst 8412N/2GMLE

supposed to be one of the quietest fan out there, I'll update how quiet this fan really is.

Got mine a couple of days ago. Yes, indeed, it is silent, much quieter than the one I have (a taiwanese model) but do need a wallwart with higher amperage to generate enough air flow. I use 12v, 1amp, works great!
