I saw j&R sells it for 249$ and onecall and 6ave sell it for 299$...
For this range of price, is this subwoofer a good buy? Or add 100$ to get a HSU STF-2? HSU worth the extra 100$?

Thanks.

I have had extensive hands-on experience with the CHT-12, and the STF-2. They both have their strengths, it all boils down to what type of bass you are looking for.

The Velodyne CHT-12 is incredibly robust and powerfull. I have tried to bust that woofer on many occasions, to no avail. The bass can be bone shattering, and can definately rattle your home with ease. (so long your room is no larger than 20x20). This thing can pump some serious SPL, not to mention it has great extension. This sub can be musical, but for the most part, its forte is movies. It rocks with them. And for $249 and $299... its a damn steal..... The CHT-8 retails for $299 at Circuit City. If I wasnt building my own sub, I would go for the CHT-12 right now for my second system.

And now on to the HSU. The HSU is a large, fairly good looking sub. Both subs play about as deep, with a very, very slight edge going to the HSU stf-2. Bear in mind it has just a 10'' driver. SPL will not match the Velodyne at all. The trade off is super clean, tight bass. If you want accuracy at an affordable price, than look no further. This thing will blend effortlessly with your main speakers. This is a whole different kind of bass, it doesnt *boom*, so its recommended you give it some time to get used to it. Now dont get me wrong, it CAN kick and rattle when called for, but I found its forte to be accurate, musical reproduction in modest sized rooms.

I cant decide for you, so you will just have to figure out what type of bass it is that you like....

Eh, so I'm still debating. Circuit City has them in stock, but won't price match to online places. ($399 for CHT-10 and $499 for CHT-12.. uh . I don't think so).

J&R wants $60 for shipping...

Anyway, still a good price, and it seems to get good reviews, then I heard it has a PAPER cone and the surround is foam? Please tell me that is not true!

6ave.com has velodyne CHT12 for 260$+0.06$shipping, better than JR.

But I think hsu is better, though I have not gotten a chance to hear them...

I have been to crapusa once for driving 60 miles to see a hsu. But they only had one display left and even did not want to lower the price

I concur with ATCVenom. I had a CHT-12 sub that delivered absolutely gut-wrenching bass, and was outstanding in a home theater application, but musically, well.......it just never seemed to blend well with any speakers and just seemed too "boomy". Definitely best suited to home theater use IMO.

If you buy it, pick up "Blackhawk Down", and be in for one hell of a thrill ride :D . In fact, I sold mine when I bought my Mc amp.....with the prices dropping, it may be time for another ;)

Oh, and one note......the early CHT-12s had problematic power supplies, they would hum pretty loudly. When mine was brought in for warranty repair, they put one in out of a CT-120. I called Velodyne and they told me that there was absolutely no difference between the two models, Might want to bear that in mind if you want to go shopping for a used bargain on eBay instead.
