I've got a Kenwood THX certified receiver. I've been operating under the assumption that I should only turn on the THX when watching a DVD that's been THX certified. Is this wrong? Should I leave the THX on all the time?

Does your owner's manual tell you what it does when you put it in THX mode. Since THX is a certification, this is a little confusing. I know some Onkyo's have jumped on this wagon as well.

When you activate the THX circuitry, you are engageing some DSP modes that automatically adjust the eq of the program material, i.e. bass enphasis and treble boost. Although these eq modifications might not suit all program material, what you should do is experiement and find out how you like the THX settings on various program sources, i.e. rock & roll, jazz, SACD, 5.1, dolby digital, etc.

I find that the reciever is much better if you let it autodetect and only kick into THX mode on the DD and higher playback modes. Personally, I set my fronts to normal, and the other to small (none to large) sounds best and keeps the reciever from getting too warm.
What model do you have? If it's the 7070, I have some tricks.

Hey jdhdiggs, I have the VR7070. While I'm happy with my current set-up, I'm always on the look out for new tricks. Watcha got?

What's your setup (Speaks(6.1 or 5.2)/roomsize)? Do you have autodetect set-up for all your inputs yet? Bass limiter/ optimizer setup? (That one's fun with the wife in the other room) Set each speakr size/distance? (LF X-over is at 80/40/none in non-THX mode and 120/80/60 in THX mode, or did ya know that?)
I know it sounds lame, but seriously read the manual, there is tons of great stuff in there...
I'm currently running the rear speaker set-up but am interested to see what happens if you move the sixth channel to the sub...
Without knowing more about your set-up, just go through the checklist above

My setup is 5.1 with the sub coming from the pre-out. 6-ch. amp is off. SW re-mix is on. Bass peak limiter is off. I don't use the auto detect function on the DVD/6CH button. I use this as my DVD-A analog input. Auto detect always forces it to use the optical input so I had to override it. I did not know that about LFE XO. Where did you find that information, is that a THX standard? I've found that the manual is moderately useful. Could be better, could be worse.

The THX "standard" is 80 if I'm not mistaken. I just thought it was odd that the X-over points are different in the two setups. Have you found the "speaker eq" feature to be of any use?

I use the "Speaker EQ" feature only when setting up or trying out different speakers. It's quite handy to change speaker sizes.
