Bandpasses are completely useless if prefab.....
They are extremely affective when built the the subwoofers specs.

Bandpass boxes will be very "Boomy", and you'll get the most volume for the dollar, but the quality goes right out the door. All your bass hits will sound like the same note. Sealed or ported boxes are definitely the way to go.

agreed, bandpasses are used to make noise, not music...

hmmm... yeah, agreed, bandpass gives you a certain band of frequencies (band...pass) that are reproduced very loudly and slightly accurately... above and below those frequencies... utter crap
the best part is, the tradeoff is between effiency and extension - you want a bigger passband, you sacrifice dB's... you want dB's, you sacrifice range and (more) accuracy.
rap-agreed for gangsta' crap... however, pop rap (nelly, eminem, etc.) actually does have some semblance of a bassline; i have to confess to a sincere enjoyment of a strong, yet specific, bassline in some of nelly's songs (namely track 5, whatever that is, on his newest cd; i love the way the turntables slide down into the sub range)
