If I were planning to build a sub I think I'd buy one of these:

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=299-750&dotd=050604

That thing's a monster of a woofer. Free shipping until this evening, 5/07. They can't have many of these left...

No affiliation with PE, of course. Just passing the info along.

I have seen that sub before at PE.

Is that sub for home use, or is it more of a Pro Audio (i.e. DJ style) sub?

At 20 Hz, that thing is down about 15 Db's. (in the ported box recommendations) I'd of figured it would have played lower.

Why not just get tried and true DIY home theater sub like a Tempest (biased), Dayton DVC, Titanic, 2 Shivas, Stryke AV15 or Blueprint 1503 etc for less money?

Well, main thing with the JBL is the "high-end" features and construction, I guess you could say. The shorting rings in the magnet structure, and such that reduce distortion. I would look at it as more of a high quality sub for music, that works in a vented box. These could even work great as woofers in a huge, full-range 3-way  . That's actually more my thing than a stand-alone sub.

But true, the Tempest, Shiva, Stryke etc., are well known, highly regarded, and cheaper. I admit I hadn't even looked at the box modeling, and I'm a little surprised that a lower F3 isn't possible.

Oh well.... I thought it was interesting. Looks like shipping's still free as of 4:40 PM, CDT
