View Full Version : Polkfest, 9 Oct 2004, Charleston SC- be there!!!

All,
I think know is the time to start the planning of the East Coast October Polkfest. The date that I am planning is Saturday, 9 October.
Location is, obviously, my house in North Charleston, SC.
For those coming in from out of town, I am literally minutes away from the local airport (Charleston Int'l), Amtrak and Bus stations. If you choose one of those routes, let me know and I can arrange transportation.
Accomodations: I have LIMITED space at my house and so far the sofas and so forth have pretty much been spoken for. If you want to roll a sleeping bag on the floor, I have no issues with that. There are any number of hotels within minutes of my house. If there is enough interest, we can inquire about, possibly, a group discount.
All travel / accommodation issues we can work on a case by case basis.
For the event itself. As it is a holiday weekend, if there is interest, we can make it a weekend long event. A social / BBQ type affair on Friday night as people roll in. The gear demo and so forth on Saturday. If people want to hang around for Sunday, we can see about playing golf or taking in the sights of Charleston or what have you. Guys, Charleston is one of the top tourist destinations in the US, you can play this angle with your spouses. The lovely Wendi is more than happy to show your spouses and kids around. Spouses and kids are MORE than welcome at my house, I have no issues with that whatsoever.
Gear sale or swap: I think this is a GREAT idea. If you want to bring gear to sell, have at it.
OK, the demo setup:
I can set up, probably 3 quality demo rooms. 1 can double as a 2ch / HT setup.
As far as rigs,
I can do the Carver Amazings in the man cave / SDA SRS 2.3tl's in the main room / Lsi's 9's in third
As far as amplification, I have quite a bit of Carver gear and so forth.
If you want to bring gear, bring it on. I will probably be able to borrow a CJ MV60 tube amp and/or Jolida tube integrated. Possibly a pair of Totem Staff's. MAYBE a pair of Maggie 1.6's.
As far as the gear, talk it up and let's see what we can come up with.

Hey, lets call it polktoberfest.:D I am planning on being there, not sure if the rest of the clan will be in tow or not but should have a better idea on that soon. I will plan on bringing the h.k. 525, my one of a kind Tenn. Sound Co. speaks that were made here in my hometown in the 80's, and I may have a pair of monitor 10's that I can bring as well. Any other bring alongs have yet to be determined, may bring the adcom 545 II if nobody else is bringing one.
My bud that I am working for now used to live there and may possibly be interested in making the journy as well if that is o.k.?
Cannot wait to meet with you guys, I am sure it will be a blast.
Later,
Mike

I will be there for sure. I've got the calendar marked. The wife may want to come as she loves to visit Charleston, but this is up in the air. I would be glad to bring any of the following gear for the demo rooms.
Rt55i
Rt25i
Large Advents (1979 versions)
NAD C270 Stereo Amp
Cambridge Audio D500SE CDP
Maybe a pair of RT400 floorstanders if the deal goes through.
Any...all...whatever...just let me know what to bring.

Doro's traveling companions:
CTC BBQ
MIT S3 Interconnects/ Speaker Cable
Dixie Blackened Voodoo Beer :D
Vaseline
Various Condoms
I will also arrange some items to be given away in some blind drawings.
Look forward to seeing everyone.
I will get in touch with you formally via email Troy.

You got me worried mark. VooDoo beer? Now thats a new one on me. I prefer some sam adams or george kill, but never with vas. and condos.:D If I can come up with some 6bq5 tubes and a variac I will bring my vintage knight amp.
I wish I could go...
No ride though, sigh...

If anyone has something vintage and/or unique....please think about bringing it. This will be a great chance for you to see some gear that you never have, all in one place.
Hotwheelpimp - Definetly bring that SOB!
Shackdaddy - I will leave the party favors in the car :D

Count me in gentlemen!
If there's anyone in the area that wants to climb aboard with me in my Explorer, then please do so. Coming down from Baltimore.
Mark and Jesse, not sure what your travel plans are. Perhaps we can get a convoy going. With all your equipment in tow, looks like 1 vehicle won't be enough.
I'll most likely look at a motel close by since I may want to stay an extra day or 2. Anyone else looking at a motel, then lets do Troy's suggestion and get a group rate.
I won't have any equipment to bring. Seems like everyone already has what I have. I can however bring some fine wines from the Maryland Vineyards. I'm quite sure the ladies at the very least would enjoy some. I'll also have my digital camera in tow.
Gonna be fun!
John
Troy,
As you well know – I am already in. It appears as though luck *may* potentially be on my side. I mentioned this venture to my parents and they enjoyed the idea of taking a trip down to Charleston. If that goes down, than I just found my free ride. If not, well perhaps I could car pool with the Maryland gang? *thinks of creative ways to “borrow” the ctc*.
Gentlemen, at this point, it appears as if many of us plan on bringing quite a bit of gear with us to demo off. Troy is gunna have a bit waiting for us as is, so perhaps as time goes on, it will be best to limit the amount of gear people bring with them – for real estate purposes. That of course, is Troy’s call. But I would like to have some decent quality (15-20 mins?) with each various piece of equipment.
I intend on bringing my DIY “venom” cables. I am dying to hear the MIT S3, and would love even more to pit them against my own creation. I am preparing for my butt to get burned, but it will be fun nonetheless.
Sean
edit: IMPORTANT!!! follow-up:
Are there any cats at your place? And do you smoke?
If so - then count me out. It would also be pretty important to list anything (pet wise) you may have. Some people have severe allergies that can trigger other ****.

Sorry, can't remember, but where do you live?
I'll be coordinating with Mark and Jesse (Dorokusai & F1Nut) about our travel plans in the comings weeks/months.
Troy, I'm thinking it's about 8 hours to your place from Baltimore, right? Just trying to get my bearings straight.

John- I'll email you tonight.....it would be simply more cost effective to take one vehicle...if you are the vehicle. It's not that much stuff, but I can't fit 3 people and this gear in the A4. Blah blah, I'll email you :) We need to pick up Micah also.....
Take a freaking allergy pill Sean! This is NOT to be missed!
Any, EAST COAST especially, Polkie that does not take the time to attend, even for a couple hours, will have their name changed to "Bose Fanatic" ;) Just kidding.....maybe.

Chuck, it's around 8 hours of drive time. Flying in is also a option. It's a beautiful city right on the Atlantic and rich in history, you need to go.
If all of us MD boys go we'll have to take two cars or maybe some of us can fly.

This is something to consider for sure. I'll check at work and see if I can get a run down of activities around then. Our big product of the century comes out for a show in early Oct so I'll have to see if my part is going to be drug through the mud or not. Sure would like to meet up with Troy and the others.

OK, for the Baltimore guys......
It's about 600 miles, once you get south of DC, it's a nearly straight shot all interstate. It took me 10 hrs to get from Jesse's house to mine (and I'm not a fast driver).
Far as the gear goes, Hey, bring what you like and we'll try to get to it. IF it looks like we are going to have THAT much gear, hell, I can even see about setting up rigs in the third spare room or even the garage.
danger, keep an eye on the airfares. Charleston is going to get a discount carrier soon and they are expecting fares to drop accross the board.
Also, I'm getting ready to head back to the desert next week so I'll be on and off here so as issues arise, post 'em here and I'll get to them as I can.

On the house,
I do not smoke. I have a 16x16 deck on the back of the house for those that want to smoke or the garage, that's about my only rule.
Pets, I do have a cat and a dog but they will not be there for the Polkfest, I will have them at my sisters place for the weekend.

Those are pretty loose rules! So we can have cock fighting in the family room, prostitutes lap dancing in the kitchen, water balloon fights in the hallways and can all bring our cats, dogs, snakes, pigs and sheep?

Well, I'm sorry but I'm going to have to miss this. Mainly because, unless recent financial setbacks prove to be too burdensome to overcome in time and I have to push it back, October 9th, 2004 is the day I am getting married.
It's a shame too. I have some gear that is very impressive and I know the Lightning would make a believer out of ALOT of you car audio skeptics. But oh well, maybe next time.

Look, I want this to be a friendly event and to that end, I do reserve the right to uninvite those that don't play well with others. Those that aren't welcome, know who they are. Everyone else, including Dan, is more than welcome.
Anyhoo....let's keep this on track. Let's see if we can get a list together with the gear that people are planning on bringing. Is there any interest in a two day event? How many golfers are there?
Just throwing out some ideas..

I am planning on being there, only about three hours or so away. I am just off 95 (1.5 miles) in Georgia so anybody coming from the South we could hook up.
I enjoy smacking the little ball around so I would be up for golf. Also I could hitch up Reelltrouble and tow her up if any interest in fishing the local water of Charleston, since I have never fished there would need someone who had a few secrect spots!!
Seems like alot of folks are interested so maybe two days is a good idea, hell Monday is a holiday for me, so great way and place to spend a long weekend.
I bought most of my 2 ch gear from folks in the flea market so of course they have heard it, easy to move the 2 ch stuff though (except the SDA), so maybe they want to give it a kiss and say hello!:p
Have some 55i's that have some small nicks so could bring those without much worry, have one of those little Tosh 3960 unmodded.

So what am I, chopped liver?
I don't care if I'm bound, gagged, and stuffed in the trunk, I'm flying in to see Doroko**** and the Baltimore gang, and hitching a ride down with SOMEONE.
I'll fly out of Charleston after I get some 'alone' time with Troy.

troy - anymore thoughts on a golf outing? The clubs are always in the trunk.

06-23-2004, 05:07 PM
I'm all about a golf outing! If we were going to get 4 or 5 foursomes (a LONG shot).....I would see about getting something together with one of the local courses but I don't *think* we'll have that many players. That said, there are several nice courses within a couple miles of the house.......figure 30ish for greensfees and cart.
I'm going to keep harping on this to get as many folks as possible to come on out. One, if we want Polk sponsorship, it makes sense. Two, I'm trying to involve a local audio dealer and he is a good guy but he's not real keen on loaning me a bunch of stuff for 5 or 6 guys, you know?
Lastly, I'd like to dedicate the gathering to the memory of our dear, departed forum member Shane 'Nascarmann' Mann who passed a while back. Not sure the best way to do that, if you guys have ideas, lemme know.
Far as the food goes, what's everyones thoughts there? Obviously, I will have a keg of beer in the kegerator and misc brands in the fridge plus plenty of soft drinks and so forth. I'm thinking, depending on turnout, of possibly doing 1/2 pig at my in-laws and have some real BBQ and all the goodies. Still working that angle though.

Done that with a 5 Iron. A 170-180 yd club will get to "most" par 4s in two shots and "most" par 5s in three shots. Enough loft to chip and still use to putt. Bunkers are tough. This is a good way to get some excercise while walking a course without lugging a bag. Also a good way to work on your mid iron shots (which the average golfer rarely practices).
Makes for a better match after a few (or a lot of) beers though...

Well, the layout of the house is this....
In the mancave, I'll have the Amazings. We can swap amps/pres/sources in there reasonably easy. The only issue in the cave, really, is space. It's an intimate setting (not hoosier's idea of 'intimate' either)
The living room is quite a bit bigger, I've got the 2.3tl's in there. I thought I'd set up a temporary rack in front of the TV and we can swap out gear pretty easy in that scenario. We can also fit more people in for a demo....
Anyhow, just getting people's thoughts and so forth. Like I said, my HT is nothing to really brag about.

Ok, just going through the posts and wanted to just give an abreviated update on what's going on...
Atendees:
hotwheelman, shack, dorokusai, F1Nut , john d strong, ATCVenom, madmax, Russman , gidrah, Grimster74, disneyjoe7, Terrax, reeltrouble1, hoosier21, Sid and Dezi ( Sid and Nancy?)....
I've also got for or five buddies local that will come by.
Gear that I have lined up:
Speaks:
Carver Amazings, SDA SRS 2.3tl's, LSi9's, AR-3a's, (should have) Montior 7C's, Rt55i/RT25i/Large Advents(shack)
Pre's: CJ PV7 (tube), Carver C-16, Dynaco Pat-4, Sunfire TG pre/pro
Amps: Carver Silver 9t's, TFM-45, m400a, m200t, Audiosource, NAD (shack), CTC BBQ (dorokusai)
Sources - AMC CD8b, ADC 16/2, Cambridge Audio (shack)
Additionally, depending on if one of my friends shows, we could have some add'l high tone gear....more to follow.
IMO, it may SOUND like we have a lot but I think that if people want to bring more stuff, it will see action.
SACD/DVDA - if anyone out there has a unit that they want to bring and some demo material I think that would be cool!
As far as a timetable goes (and I'm looking for input here)
Friday night is pretty open. I plan on something simple like grilling out burgers/hotdogs/chicken or what have you. As people filter in, come on over and we'll have a few beers and we can discuss the setup and layout. Then the booze comes out. As far as the minors go, if Sid and Dezi come, I'd like thier chaperone there as well.
Saturday: Saturday AM, get all the gear in place and so forth. As far as a timetable, I was thinking, oh, 10 AM start? That'll give the hangovers time to REALLY kick in.
***FOOD*** What do you guys think? You guys want to order pizzas? I can get pulled pork BBQ catered? Finger foods? Looking for inputs on that.
As far as a closing timetable, pfffffft, we can demo until midnight for all I care.
Sunday. For those that want to play golf, I'll reserve some T-times at a nearby course. I was thinking Wescott Plantation is nice. It's about 3 miles from my house and is a pretty nice course. Cost is about 40 bucks with cart. If we want cheaper, the River Club is about the same distance, around 20 with a cart. It has a nice layout but the conditions are hit or miss. Whatever you guys want.
Reel talked about bringing his boat, if people want to go boating, there are a couple public boat ramps with access to the Ashley River nearby. I SHOULD have some local folks lined up with a little more knowledge than I do.
By Monday morning sometime, I want all you mofos out! (Just kidding)

Anyone bringing gear for sale?? I've got a few items I may have up for sale
I've decided that I'm probably going to do a fair bit of liquidating of gear. So bring your checkbooks (cash for some of you) ;)
I'll have a few amps (Carver, Onk), pres (Onk, Carver, Dynaco) maybe an integrated or two. Speakers I'm kinda thin on, if someone digs the AR's, I might make 'em a deal.

Better yet, since my neighbor is a cop (who will be there), a night in the Dorchester County lock up isn't out of the question.

Couple of thoughts....
How many folks are wanting to crash at my house? Both of the couches are pretty much spoken for but for those still wanting to crash...got plenty of floor.
How many are planning on staying at a hotel and do you need local hotel info??
Also, don't forget demo material as well! NO RAP or DEATHMETAL so Sid can leave all his CD's at home. :D

OK guys. If you don't mind having me, I think I can make this soiree. My son's B-Day is the 7th so barring my wife planning something for that weekend that conflicts, I will be able to make it.
No offense to John's driving but I think I'll fly or train down so I'll need a shipping address so I can ship down trinkets and maybe something interesting to listen to.
Anybody have any suggestions for what to bring to listen to? I have a pair of CRS+ at home.

Paul - Excellent to hear that you will be attending, and will look forward to seeing you again. Troy had a preliminary list of gear that is being brought and gear that already resides in his house...perhaps he will update that for us. I know that the crew from up here, F1Nut, John Strong and myself are bringing quite a treasure trove of goodies :D

Wow, that's AWESOME!
I'm really excited and flattered that Paul would be willing to come down and visit with us.
OK, updated gear list.
Here goes:
Speakers:
Polk SDA SRS 2.3tl's
Polk LSi9's / LSi7's
Carver Amazings
AR-3a's
Polk Monitor 7c's
Polk Monitor 10's
Polk RT55's/25's
Large Advents
Polk RTA 15tl's
NHT SB-3's
Sources:
AMC CD8b
ADC 16/2
Cambridge Audio
Doro's Sony ES SACD player
Tosh 3960 (unmodded)
Preamps
Conrad Johnson PV-7
Musical Fidelity A3cr
Carver C-16
Dynaco Pat-4
Anthem Pre-2L
Amps:
Carver Silver 9t mono's
Carver TFM-45 / m4.0t / m1.5t/ m400a
CTC BBQ
I think we'll probably end up with some others as well.
Assorted wires and IC's
OK, I've got the smaller mancave where the Amazings reside and the larger living room where the 2.3tl's are. That room is fairly large and square so we can set gear up along two walls, I'm thinking. I had thought about a third room but we'll just have to see how that works out.
An HT demo is doable, but, as I've said, my HT setup isn't all that great.
The schedule of events is pretty flexible. Friday night cookout / social. Saturday we can start whenever and go to whenever. I'm planning on having it catered by a local BBQ joint so we should have plenty o' grub. Sunday is still open, we can hang out, go to Ft. Sumter / do the Charleston tourist thing whatever.....Up to you guys, whatever you want to do, we will make it happen.

Yo good people, was gone to Colorado for a bit, had fun white water rafting the Royal Gorge but good to back in the south again.:D
DisneyJoe and myself have talked about riding up together, I see some have mentioned wanting a boat ride or some such thing, I could bring the boat but boating is so weather dependent, looks like Sunday would be the only day and it would be much better if someone who knows the waters road along, we have big tide swings and where there looks or was water can change quickly. I could easily take five out with me, so lets see if there is really any interest as it would be a big waste to tow up not to use or if it rains etc.
If not boating I am up for just about anything cept naked dancing by any of you or me:rolleyes:
I could bring the older NAD pre and the Tosh 3960 if anyone wants to hear how it matches up against the better stuff.
Last we talked DJ and I were talking about staying at a local inn.

Reel,
Cool, I've got an (unmodded) Tosh 3960 so you probably don't need to bring yours (I forgot to add it to the list) if it's a stock one. If it's modded, bring it on. Far as the boat, sorta have to play that one by ear I reckon. One of my local guests is a boater so he can give you the low down.
Also,
We have, I see lurking, an AK'er who has come accross a pair of Monitor 10's. I've been conversing with him an AK's website and he says he's in. He's got some cool vintage gear as well and seems like a very cool guy so welcome Dave aka DAGLJAM6.

Still plan on going, though I will have to completely rely on my parents (eww) as I refuse to take a bus and/or train. Unfortunately the vehicle is in less than travel worthy condition!

Yes, through Troy's kind invite I'll be there.
I'll add the 10's to the load as well as the big Infinitys.
I also told Troy that I'd bring the Kenwood M2amp/C2 pre
just to see how they shake out against some of the other brands.
Dorokusai, please bring the stands besides the benefit to the speakers I'd like to get pix and measurements.( will appreciate that much.)
Oh and BTW Troy i'm smitten the 10's are easily becoming my favorite speakers at the house.
I can see/hear what's behind all the swell write ups about Polk in general.
Anyhoo, glad to be a part of it and thanks again for the invite.

A large Advent speaker circa 1979 would be the "New" Advent Loudspeaker and not the original Advent Loudspeaker. The "New" was introduced as having "improvements" over the originals.
Troy,
The Advents in Stephie's bedroom are the "New" models. A nice speaker, but different from the original.

George Grand
09-04-2004, 03:15 PM
The ones nobody else wants. Okay I got that out of the way, sit back down Sid I was only kidding.
I thinks you have the "New" like my daughters. Kind of tough to see the detail in your images. If there is a kind of gray rubber strip between the outer edge of the grille and the cabinet, it's the "New". There is nothing written on the back by the input terminals? Take a look mon, they should be labeled "The "New" Advent Loudspeaker. If that's what you have it's a fine pair of loudspeakers.
For what it's worth, the original was called "The Advent Loudspeaker". Then came The "Smaller" Advent Loudspeaker, and then The "New" Advent Loudspeaker. No such animal as the Larger Advent Loudspeaker which is what some people call the original.
George Grand (of the Jersey Grands)
Hey George,
Yeah they have the gray strip around the front between it and the grill...
However there is not on the back except terminals...
Thanks for the fast reply...
George Grand
09-04-2004, 03:22 PM

That is certainly subject to interpretation, but I appreciate the comment lol :) I think that sounds like a fantastic setup.
The RT55i is perhaps the best bookshelf speaker Polk Audio has produced, from what I gather, and it would be cool to put my ear on them.
The Dayton Titanic also stirs interest, just because it is what it is. A PE offering with great performance, how can an individual not want to hear a catalog offering that actually kicks ass? I am motivated.
Thanks for opting to bring them Steve, I really look forward to hearing them and meeting you....did I say that in the right order? :D JK

I just went into my daughters room. I stand SOMEWHAT corrected. Hers are not labeled at the terminals as "New" either, but the cabinet front is completely different from yours, having all rounded corners, and the gray rubber strip also. I did not get them new, and the original cartons were not included, but the original owners manny was, and it is The New Advent Loudspeaker. It discusses the availability of yours in the utility cabinet but does not provide an image.
So you can haul yours down there (or up there), but if it's cumbersome, he can hear them next time he passes through Jersey.

As I recall....It was about $75 more to get those cabs...which was a lot of $ for someone making $850 a month back in 79.
I guess it will be ok to haul it all down to Troys....I'll just need to convince my wife to let me use her SUV. I'll need to be carefull and not speed too much. I can see getting pulled over by a SC State Trooper and trying to explain that the reason I have a whole bunch of audio gear and golf clubs in the back is because I'm going to Charleston to drink beer, listen to music and play golf with a bunch of guys I've never met...

My first paycheck as a boom operator was in Sep '78. I CLEARED $55 for 4 days work from 11-14 Sep. Do the math. Nice fat paycheck for refueling airplanes at 450-500 mph huh? Almost $14 a day!
George Grand (of the Jersey Grands)
I've often thought about what you mentioned about a carload of audio. It's one of the things that prompted me to start keeping a log of every single thing I bought, how much I paid for it, exactly when and where I bought it. One of the other reasons was so I don't sell something for $40 when I paid $50 for it.
