"Tank Girl" has to be the worst movie I've seen in recent memory. Thank goodness it was just a cheap DVD rental.
07-26-2001, 04:59 PM
Why would you do that? Were you drunk? Tank Girl? I'm suprised that would even be ON dvd.
07-26-2001, 05:44 PM
C'mon Micah, Tank Girl is great, it is perfectly good cheese. Send it to me, I buy it off-ya.
07-26-2001, 06:56 PM
Why in the hell would they commit a piece of crap like that to DVD yet here I sit wondering what's holding up Star Wars??!!??
07-27-2001, 09:47 AM
I don't what I was thinking... That Lori Petty is cute, that the little dark haired Aussie chick is cute, that the concept was "Road Warrior-ish," that I met Ice-T once and he was pretty cool...? Whatever. I rented the stupid thing, since MGM is releasing a slew of its back catalog on pretty good, anamorphic, 5.1 discs (I plan to watch "Cotton Club" tonight). It would make a good drink coaster. Thank goodness I didn't buy it.
Another dumb movie that attracted me cause of the hot chick on the cover: "Heavy Metal 2000." It's ****e. Even the animation isn't up the level of the lame, pre-computerized animation in the original 1980 "Heavy Metal," which I love. And the "hot chick," a penthouse pet named Julie (of course), really isn't all that hot when you really get a good, close look at her. What a letdown. Another rental, thankfully.
And listen, I don't want to start a big "Star Wars" flame argument, but you know, if, when the stupid movie finally comes to DVD, it's not in its absolutely original, pre-monkeyed-with, pre-special-editioned form... I'm just not buying it. I'm sure that freaking Lucas will make that version available; it'll be one of the multi-versions he markets when he finally gets around to it. I can't believe people are actually lining up to get "Phantom Menace" on DVD... I can't believe that at shows from now on all I'm going to see as a demo is the stupid pod race scene. Why don't we boycott his crap and teach him a lesson? Why must we keep giving him money for nothing?
Grrr. "Tank Girl" was horrible, but it was better than "TPM." So there.
07-27-2001, 10:04 AM
Is it just me... or has anyone else noticed that every
chick named Juli(e) is a psycho?
07-27-2001, 10:25 AM
No it is not just you.
Every chick named Julie is psycho. In fact, any "J" named chick is psycho. For me, it started when I was 15 with a "Jennifer." Only later was there a "Julie," and most recently I made the mistake of another "Julie." In fact, I'd go so far as to say that, for me, J, K and L names are dangerous.
Now, when I meet chicks, I ask the usual, "What's your name?" question, and if it's "Julie," or any J, K or L name, I suddenly get a sick look on my face, start slapping my arms around my body and yelling "Snakes! SNAKES! Snakes on me!" and run away screaming.
It's the only thing you can do. My next girlfriend needs to be named "Angie," or "Samantha" or something non-J, K or L. (But you know, you can't get away from them.)
07-27-2001, 11:32 AM
Micah, even I would not go near HM2000. The frist was great. Just the look of the cover for 2000 is horrid.
I will almost bet that we will NOT see SW in its origional form, you know Lucas will most likely add even more stuff. Although I hope against hope that he will put the origional theater version on the disk and us seemless branching for the added footage.
I am going to the HTF national meet in September, in which we will vist FOX once again. Knowing the free-bees these studios give out, I am hoping to see TPM as it is released 2 weeks after the meet. That will save me from lineing up at Best Buy at midnight for TPM, yes I will be in line, so there.
Never dated a girl whos name started with a J. Just lucky I guess.
07-27-2001, 11:47 AM
Phantom Menace BLOWS.
Period, end of story. I'd rather watch Tank Girl once a week for life, vs seeing PM the SECOND time.
Darth Maul, CCCCCCCHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Jar Jar? Give me a big F'n break.
Sad, SAD display. I was and will remain an original Star Wars fan, I saw it in the theater as a kid, I had the original action figures, the ships, the COOL STUFF. ESB was greatness too as a sequel. Even the little gay-ewoks in ROTJ are bearable (no pun) compared to the crap characters and pathetic storyline that PM forced down our throats.
I felt violated, I felt used, I felt CHEATED.
Sorry to open this up, but it really messes with my head.
07-27-2001, 11:52 AM
No way Russ. THE PHANTOM MENACE was way better then A NEW HOPE;)
07-27-2001, 12:02 PM
Get off it Ron. Such a nice setup, the seats, the gear, the green, the new screen......only to be WASTED on a CRAP piss-ass multi-million dollar B-MOVIE at BEST.
UG, ECK, BLAH, YUK

I go all out on "No."s and then I notice Ron's little ;) smilie thing.
I'm hoping Ron's kidding.
No, Ron, no.
07-27-2001, 12:20 PM
Yeah, look at the winky. Just wanted to fire up the thread a bit.
Just a joke, not real, only kidding, for some humor, I was not being serious.
07-27-2001, 01:03 PM
I've only dated one J girl, Julia. She wasn't psycho, though. I am pretty much in love with a Julie, but instead of her being crazy, she's making ME crazy. I guess that's just as bad. And then there's this other girl Jen.....man, there are a lot of J's here. What's going on? Micah!!!
Everyone agrees TPM did not even get close to living up to the orignal trilogy. However, if you consider on its own, it's a decent movie. Too bad I don't think of it that way. Heh. They have a lot of ground to make up in Epsiode II. And yes, I'll be there opening day (or morning if they do the 12am thing again).
07-27-2001, 01:48 PM
man, there are a lot of J's here. What's going on? Micah!!!
Stay away from them, man. They will harm you. Serious. "J" is bad.
if you consider on its own, it's a decent movie.
Uh, no. No. Nope. It's not. It's garbage.
And yes, I'll be there opening day...
You're not going to dress up as Princess Leia again, are you?
07-27-2001, 01:53 PM
Note to self: Find golden-bikini after work and get new batteries for the digital camera
07-27-2001, 02:15 PM
Micah is right. Stay far, far away from the J's.
Julia (or any variation of Juli, Julie, Jewels, Julia, etc) - they are all absolutely psycho. The crazy's that you are feeling; well, thats just phase-1 of the master J-plan (they all do that). The only defense is to completely isolate yourself from the J-girl.
Intensive listening to Polk Audio speakers is the first step towards recovery. Be prepared though - this will guarantee to put a J-girl on the offensive. She won't rest until she controls every aspect of your soul and your music collection. Pretty soon, you'll find Carly Simon among your CD's. Then, you'll start thinking to yourself.... maybe B - - - speakers would fit the decor of HER living room better.
RUN MAN - RUN. While you still can. Perhaps its already too late?
07-27-2001, 05:29 PM
Truly scary man. Girls with J-K-L names will make you:
- Leave your home and run all over the country trying to find peace;
- Ditch your jobs and your friends, all in a futile effort to get away;
- Twitch uncontrollably when you realize that every femme fatale/evil woman in every movie ever made has the same name/look;
- Have panic attacks regularly;
- Lose weight from lack of appetite;
- Become intimately aquainted with the stucco patterns on your bedroom ceiling from lack of sleep;
- Raise your expectations to unbelieveable levels, only to be left high and dry by other girls with "lesser" names;
I'm sure there's more, but I'm having shortness of breath and heart palpatations just thinking about this.
07-27-2001, 05:54 PM
What I don't understand is, when you DO meet a girl (and eventaully break up with her), after her, every girl you meet has the SAME DAMN NAME or some similar variation.
You: "Hey, I've been talking to you for an hour and you seem pretty cool, what's your name?"
Her: "It's XXX"
You: "Ahhhh, damn it, well, nice talking to you...".
You: "Let's get out of here guys, it's another XXX".
Never fails. And you know she's crazy just like the last 4 XXXs.
07-27-2001, 08:18 PM
If this is truly the case, I'm doomed! There are J's all over!
07-27-2001, 08:38 PM
Well, I see what not to rent. Excuse me for butting in a little bit. I am a NEWBIE to surround. Just got a brand new everything hooked up and now I want to rent my first DVD and I want it to be a good one.
Age bracket is Baby Boomer - female, NOT a "J" name
Please advise. Thanks!
07-27-2001, 09:35 PM
Welcome to the forum! Perhaps you'll be able to inject some much needed female perspectives on audio issues in this predominately male forum. Here's what I would rent (off the top of my head):
- Terminator 2: Ultimate Edition
- Top Gun
07-27-2001, 10:29 PM
I would throw Platoon and Saving Private Ryan in there as well.....Welcome to the forum. I don't know that I could stereotype by name but evil women DO have some common traits but that is why bourbon exists amigos. Beware the ones that view you as a project. You know what I mean...."He will be perfect once I break him of ____________" if you hear that RUN! Don't walk but get away as fast as you can.
ginsnap.....welcome to the fray.

Maybe I'm wrong, but Gingersnaps be some FINE cookies.

G is good. J is junk.
I just picked up Scott's Monitor 10 series 2.
These are some large boxes - even by Polk standards.
I'm looking forward to restoring them to polk original drivers.
Wish customer service were open on Saturdays.
07-30-2001, 03:27 PM
Oh no. Women are reading this forum? :D
Welcome to the forum, ginsnap! Please forgive us!
07-30-2001, 03:42 PM
Ginger Snaps are the finest of cookies.......
Micah, isn't there a pornstar by that name? You seem to be the dude to ask on that subject.
07-30-2001, 04:21 PM
I'm ignoring that.
Only on weekends.
07-30-2001, 04:21 PM
Is he ever! I told him I was hanging out with a girl named Amber and he immediately said, "Wow, that's a porn star name."
07-30-2001, 04:26 PM
"Amber" is a porn star's name. That's not my fault. Don't name your daughter Amber if you don't want to send out the message that your daughter is a porn star.
At least it's an "A" name. That's pretty safe, so far. (Altho, I know Justin will disagree.)
When do I get to meet her? Note I spelled "meet" with two E's, just to show my good faith. :D
07-30-2001, 04:31 PM
Well you could probably "meet" her tonight when she comes down, but I'll assume that you won't be staying up past 9:30 tonight. Besides, isn't it BINGO night?
07-30-2001, 04:40 PM
No, Coolie, it's movie night.
Tonight: "Time Bandits." Too bad I don't have the Criterion DVD, I just have the lame, non-anamorphic, 2-channel sound orginal DVD printing. Still, it's DVD.
Amber will just have to wait -- save herself -- for me.
07-30-2001, 04:52 PM
Micah and Justin in Celebrity Death Match......
As porn stars go, how does Amber rate?
07-30-2001, 05:19 PM
If he only knew.
07-30-2001, 05:19 PM
Hi Ginsnap, welcome. I'm new here also but I do have an opinion. Try: Perfect Storm
Short list but good.
07-31-2001, 01:59 AM
i don't know, DonP looks a lot like RonP. I may get y'all confused. I'm not sure if this is acceptable...Judges?
BTW I know a few evil Ambers. watch out!!
07-31-2001, 12:13 PM
Thank you all for your movie suggestions and welcomes. Are there any good movies that aren't action movies that have good sound? Anything that your girlfriends, wives, or moms like? Romantic comedies, musicals....you see where I'm going with this.
My receiver is Onkyo TX-DS595; speakers are PA 6600; sub is PA 250; DVD is a JVC XV-S65GD; learning remote is a Nightmare!
And yes, my name is Ginger. Nice to meet ya'll.
07-31-2001, 12:24 PM
Wendi and I really enjoyed the Thomas Crown Affair. I think a good movie is a good movie, sound just makes it better. Kind of corny but Wendi really enjoyed What Women Want
07-31-2001, 12:45 PM
I'd been wondering about "What Women Want". Do you know if there are any older movies where the sound has been re-engineered for 5.1?
The last movie I saw on the big screen was Titanic. I just sort of dropped out of going to movies in the last 10-15 years. I objected to the prices and don't care to put up with cell phones in a theater.

honesty, a sense of humor and thoughtfulness......
I know that lot of older movies have been put out on DVD, as far as the sound format, not sure. Classics are classics regardless of the sound format.
07-31-2001, 02:03 PM
True. I may have to rent "Gone With The Wind" on DVD.
I'm also VERY interested in SARC and DVD Audio.
07-31-2001, 06:53 PM
Why don't you just rent "South Pacific" and get it over with? Ezio Pinza is THE MAN on "Some Enchanted Evening". Incredible power song.
Then you can gradually work you're way up to those classic Hollywood "womans" movies that the guys recommended. The Matrix, Predator, Terminator XII et al.
George Grand (of the Jersey Grand's)
07-31-2001, 07:00 PM
You're right! I love South Pacific and it's a little easier to stomach than My Fair Lady. I actually have the original LP's to both.
07-31-2001, 07:11 PM
My dearest Ginger, Of COURSE you love "South Pacific!" Think I'm just another pretty face? Well I'm MUCH more than that. I will admit, it's like a damn curse though.
Troy's a wifebeater. Been there, seen the bruises. Don't be taken in.
your old pal,
George Grand (of the Jersey Grand's)
07-31-2001, 08:04 PM
you are a PAL.....
I of course have nothing but high praise for George. He would never steer you wrong.
I say rent Casablanca or North By Northwest and Charade. In that order. Not musicals but good movies.
07-31-2001, 10:03 PM
Admit it; every chick like's Die Hard. It's a Bruce Willis classic. I mean, when was the last time you met a girl that didn't like lots guns, explosions, and killing?
Aaron "the chick magnet"
08-01-2001, 01:41 AM
Went to the movie store; didn't see South Pacific on DVD. Actually, the place only has one wall of DVD's.
Howsomever, I purchased Charade about a year ago to watch on my computer DVD. It was grande. Now, it's going to be seen again on the "big" screen. Didn't get a new TV, gotta watch the ole RCA ColorTrac <bummer>
Casablanca and North by Northwest are primo!
And doesn't Sears make the DieHard. They're good batteries.
08-01-2001, 07:54 AM
...and found Key Largo, Maltese Falcon and a bunch of Hitchcock movies, Rear Window and Vertigo being my faves.....none of the local rental places have them so (at least in Charleston) unless you buy them you are pretty much SOL but the good ones ARE out there. The ones I saw, pretty sure all had DD 5.1.
08-01-2001, 09:49 AM
....Maybe I should go under an assumed 'female' name, and I would get a little more response from you guys....
I do sometimes like to put on my wife's T-Backs and mow the back yard at night...
Did I say that outloud?
08-01-2001, 10:04 AM
The Bogart films are not in 5.1, they are in mono (also, remember, they're not widescreen films), but the prints used on the DVDs are glorious, rich and detailed. You can not see them in any better form. The discs also have some good extras on them, as I recall.
"Suppose you tell me about it from the very beginning..."
08-01-2001, 11:17 AM
Old movies, I can converse on.
Porn, I can't. That would be Micah's department......
On the old movies I could really care less about the sound format to be honest, so I don't even really look. Casablanca I am PRETTY sure has been released in 5.1 thoug.
duuude, that should be something that you should feel free to take to your grave in silence. Besides, I am waiting to see what happens at 150.
08-01-2001, 12:18 PM
No "Casablanca" in 5.1. Mono only.
Doesn't stop it from being one of the greatest films ever made, tho.
"I'm not interested in politics. The problems of the world are not in my department."
08-01-2001, 02:29 PM
When I purchased Charade, I only paid something like $4.99 for it so I'll check into pricing on those oldies but goodies.
Does cable TV or digital cable ever broadcast in 5.1? Here in Nashville, Comcast is touting digital cable but I haven't seen it myself yet. Ya'll forgive me but I haven't watched much TV in years either. I'm very involved with computers. In fact, I run a SeniorNet Learning Center. We're all volunteers teaching seniors how to use computers.
Russ, you need to go stand in the corner.
08-01-2001, 07:41 PM
My gut tells me you're not going to be alone in the corner for long. Gonna have to find a mid point between where you are, and teachers pet like you know who. But till then, it's the corner for you.
George Grand (of the Jersey Grand's)
08-01-2001, 07:44 PM
...and no writing on the walls young man!
The oldies you can get at wal-mart from anywhere from 15-25 dollars depending.
dunno about digital cable. I believe some of the pay per view movies are. at least on Satellite they are.
08-01-2001, 10:25 PM
....roll on, South Pacific - boy.......
