With all of the reported problems with the PSW202 amplifier, is polk planning on recalling the unit or replacing it? I have had my unit replaced once by the location of purchase and is currently in your shop being fixed again. I like the sub. However, if it continues to blow up every year, I guess I can't afford to purchase Polk speakers again. I have infinity front channel speakers that are older than the Polk sub and have never had a problem.

You should keep in mind that are literally thousands of PSW202's out there. Sure, there have been some defective subs, but many people do not properly calibrate their systems and run their subs far too hot. The 202 is not going to play at 100db when you're watching Lord of the Rings. It's a 50-watt, $199 sub. It's got limitations, just like every other sub in its class.

Yeah, what he said.

When you get it back this time perhaps it would be time to sell it and get a bigger, more powerful sub that would be better suited to your listening habits.

Let me set everyone straight. I am an electronics engineer with over 17 years of experience in the television industry. I know all about proper levels and overdriving amplifiers. Secondly, I have a wife and two kids of which the oldest is 4 and the youngest is 7 months. When do you think I get the opportunity to play something loud enough to blow up a 50 watt amp? Both of the amps I have had, blew at power up with the volume control set for a normal 70 to 80 db listening range ( aroung 9 o'clock on my Sony DTS Receiver). If this will blow up a 50 watt sub, then there are only two possabilities. 1. either the sub's own power circuitry is not turning the amp on properly or 2. there is a poorly designed amp which failes prematurely. A well designed amplifier would protect itself from being overdriven by having a fuse for protection or limit the input to the amplifier. Neither of which is hard to do. I have a lot of audio visual equipment at my home and this is the ONLY piece which fails. Don't get me wrong, I like the sub. If I didn't, I would do just as you suggested and sell it. However, for my system, the sub fits perfectly. My question to the folks at Polk was just an inquiry to say you know there is a problem out there with this model and customers are spending their money to send them in for repair while they are still under warranty. However, what about the ones which exhibit the same symptoms a year or so after the warranty expires. I guess they are just out of luck. A broadcast supplier would either modify the unit to resolve the issue or they would replace it with a different model. I have had it happen several times over my 17 years in the industry.

Ok Dan, we got it. Sorry to have judged your listening habits. Perhaps a call to Ken Swauger at Polk Customer Service might help answer your questions. I do know one thing about Polk, they do and will take care of their customers. How many audio firms do you know of that still stock parts for 20 year old speakers?

The PSW202, there is a batch of them that have amp problems.

However, Ken said that most customers do NOT** experience anymore problems after they are sent in and repaired or replaced.

Contact Ken and he will set you straight...dont worry
