Has anyone checked out HELLBOY yet? If so, is it worth running out to get tommorrow at lunch time? How is the sound quality?

After reading the review over at the HTF, this is a must blind-buy. 5/5 for PQ and SQ.

The mnovie was decent and fun to watch. Very fast paced but excellent imagry and sound quality was excellent! I'm lucky 'cause my local theaters are digital sound and picture theaters. They look and sound like a modern movie theater should.

As one of teh few who has actually read Hellboy graphic novels, I was dissappointed by the lack of story structure as it pertains to the book. If you never read the book, you're in for a fairly different story with lots of action and cool characters. Maybe it's not a rush out and buy but it certainly is worth owning. I'll say one thing, if you don't get it now, when Hellboy 2 comes out, you'll be dissappoint at having to pay a marked up price for it.

All the DVD reviews I have read are all excellent. Even ones from HellBoy comic fans. This is a must blind buy from the quality stand point alone. I have a few friends coming over tomorrow for
"movie night".

I'll be honest and say I thought this film looked like a complete joke, but you guys have me convinced. I'm going to get it during the lunch hour tommorow for sure. I liked the X-Men a lot too and said the same things about those movies before I saw them as well.

Wasn't this movie in theatres just four months ago ?

That's gotta be a record for a release to dvd date.

Yeah....it was quite a fast turnorver for a relatively popular movie.

I was surprised how fast Secret Window went to dvd. I guess it didn't do so hot at the box office, but it was out on dvd less than three and a half months after it debuted on the big screen.

On topic again, I think I'll be picking up Hellboy today as well. Never saw it in the theater, but I did have fun with the dvd sampler Best Buy had. Made a good demo disc at work.

Yes but if Hollywood keeps turning them over to dvd so fast than it makes it already harder for us to leave the house ! :p

Geez....I feel sorry for those who caught this movie in theatres -which seemed like only yesterday ?!

Picked it up this morning, but I was pretty disappointed with it. I just couldn't get into it I guess. The nazi guy with the blades was cool, but all the other bad guys were lame. It felt like there was a lot of stuff left on the cutting room floor that would have added to the story.

Early B.

Just watched it. I agree with fireshoes -- the story seemed disjointed. Wasn't great. Kinda corny, actually.

Finished up at about 11:30 and me and my family were very satisfied with it. I will be checking it out again in about a month or two. The sound was great. My sub was working out with this one. My favorite scene was the street scene were the Jeep got trashed. I liked it. I guess it is just a matter of opinion.

Just finished HELLBOY.
LOVED IT.
This why I bought and am into HomeTheater. Period!
The LFE brought my PB2+ to new levels. INsanity!!! Some of the deepest hard hitting bass I have ever heard.
Movie: 4 1/2
Sound: 5
Picture: 4 1/2
This IS one of my new ALL time favorites.......
Either you like comic action movies or not.
My jaw is still on the ground.
This IS not Gone With The Wind - ladies!!!!!

I am with ya scottvamp. I rate this one pretty high myself. Most marvel comics movies do well in a home theater setup anyway. For this not to be DTS, It sounded great. Let us see if anyone else enjoyed it as much!

I also saw it last night. It was cool. Sound effects were great, with the sub going nuts. Deep, tight, hard hitting bass, not rumbling, mushy bass that is all too frequent in movies.

Story was a little weak, but I was always interested, never got bored.

I think Niles Crane playing the role of Abe Sapien was funny...;) :D

It reminded me a little bit of the Men In Black movies. Did anyone else notice the similarities??

The Director's Cut will be out later this year, most likely why they rushed the theatrical release.

As for the film, I watched it last night and agree with Mr. Vamp.

Here's some info on the DC slated for an October release.

http://www.dvddebate.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=4408&mode=flat&order=0&thold=0

We finally have official confirmation that Guillermo Del Toro's HellBoy will be released with additional footage, this year, and quite a bit before November 30th.

We know for certain that the HellBoy Director's Cut DVD set will contain an all-new cut of the movie, a new audio commentary and an exclusive Excerpt From The Diary Of Grigori Rasputin.

A HellBoy DVD Gift Set will be released on the same day and will include the Director's Cut DVD and an exclusive limited edition HellBoy figurine.

Judging by the artwork, and from snippets that we've heard (which probably isn't ideal grounds for theory), this set looks as if it will be a single DVD, with just the Director's Cut and miniscule extra features. The 2-disc HellBoy Special Edition, that we recently managed to get our mits on, is chock-a-block full of extra features; so this new DC looks as if it will just be an accompanyment to the SE and not the rumoured 3-disc set.

We will bring you more information as and when we get it. For now, read on to see a detailed look at the cover art supplied by Columbia Tristar.

Actually the release date was April 2nd of this year. Which makes it a little over 3 months to dvd.

That being said, I think the real reason for its turnover to dvd was that it fell victim to the "flavor of the week" syndrome. With a long lineup of super hero movies, it either just got lost in the shuffle or audiences weren't interested in it enough. The flick made 60 mil., which probably broke even or way under.

I recall the movie making headlines for one weekend and than just faded away....

With other superhero movies to come to dvd this fall (Van Helsing, Spiderman, even Troy or King Arthur) , marketers saw no reason to release this on disc in the summer- ahead of competitors and also remind us of this flick waaayyyy back in April ! ;)

After watching Hellboy, spiderman is a just a girl named Toby wearing spandex.
People ALWAYS say not enough story. Watch the Titanic! I do not want to why Hellboy got that exact shade of red, why one arm is bigger than the other and why you never get to see him use the little boys room. I like the mystery - I like that he smokes cigars.
I really liked this movie ---- it was a blast!!!!

Sometimes I buy movies just because they have great pq-sq, which dont require a story!! Its just fun to watch!! HB was a hoot, gotta love Pearlman!!!

The wife and I watched this last night. I thought the SQ was amazing, and I didn't even watch it close or near reference levels. Will be watching it again this weekend and then I'll put the H/T to the test.:D

Grim....just checked out your setup...... very nice.....but.....what happens if you have to move or pull your cables for your surrounds? Or would you just abandon that set and thread some other?

Bought it last night and watched...ehhhh, it was alright. The sound quality was very good, but these comic hero turned movies are getting a little long in the tooth for me.

Is Pearlman's mug the one that was the TV's Vincent lion character that lived in the tunnels?

Did you EVER have any doubts, my friend? Tell me that sub does not KICK ASS.

Did you run the 25 Hz tune for Hellboy?

I'll be watching it tonight........

Yes - I like it at 25Hz. I set the PB2 on end with the ports firing up and the bass fills the entire room instead of half. Between that and this HellBoy movie I was amazed at how deep and clean the bass was - except now it was a bit more audiable and hard FELT. I'm sure you will report back on the quality of the bass in this movie. I just think the LFE track was very well done.
Those upward firing ports may be what makes the cylinders sound really good..............

Finally watched it last night.

PQ is great, SQ is great. Was disappointed the soundtrack isn't DD-EX (since the trailer IS).

I'm mixed on the movie. The plot was unfocused at times, and had that simplistic "save the world from the evil Nazi's" flavor. It clearly catered to the less sophisticated and younger audience at times.

The PG-13 rating mandated way too much of that bloodless cartoon violence - like when the sword assassin kills five security guards and there is no blood on the floor or his sword.

Special FX and CGI was very good - no complaints there.

Ron Pearlman saved the movie by bringing some much needed dimension and depth to the Hellboy part.

HB was WAY better than that cornball Van Helsing, and I would rank it about par with Hulk, Spiderman, and Daredevil but still not close to Underworld or Blade II (if you want to group all of these movies into a loose fitting genre).
