I have a question concerning my dads dvd player. He has a toshiba sd-3800 which has suddenly deciced to stop playing practicly everything in 5.1 or better. It will play others but no luck with anything else. He's already tried one of those dvd lens cleaners (borrowed one from a friend) but that didn't do the trick. Any thoughts? Thanks for any imput.

cant tell you why exactly, but i can tell you this problem is quite systemic across the toshiba line. i had an old toshiba (cant remember the model) and after a little over a year, it took a dump, in the same fassion you just described. found from numerous sources that this problem was not unique to me.
hope this helps a little.

please clear something up. is it just not reading the disc? or is it reading the disc, but just not providing any sound ?

Thanks ohskigod for spotting the frequent problem but thats bad news for my dad. Its good to know though so he doesn't go and spend money and get some cleaner or stuff like that attempting to fix it somehow.
Danger boy... on certain dvds (mostly all of em but not cds) I put a disc in and it tries to read it for a bit then says disc error check disc. I know its not the discs because I tried them all on my crappy dvd player and they work just fine.
Thanks for the quick replies!

i think... that the laser lens may be out of whack or something like that. That's why it's not reading the discs without giving an error message.
With DVD players so inexpensive.. i'd say. it's probably not worth getting the Toshiba 3800 fixed.
go out and look for a new one.

Do you know of this same thing happening to the denon line? Because I've been thinking of picking up myself a dvd1710 but I won't if its going to crap out from a year of use. Thanks again.
